Sangster is Seeking Monitors!

Enjoy working with students?  FCPS is seeking individuals to serve as student monitors. Student monitors provide supervision support in the classroom, lunchroom, and outside. If you would like more information about the paid position, please review the job description and centralized application here. If you are considering submitting an application to be a monitor at Sangster, please email Jennifer Redford at jaredford@fcps.edu. Feel free to share information about this opportunity with anyone else you think may be interested.

Social Emotional Learning Screener

You recently received notification via your child’s Thursday folder that all K-6 graders will be administered a Social Emotional Learning Screener during the 2021-2022 school year.  The fall window for the 3-6 grade screener is October 12th – 22nd.  K-2 students will be screened in the winter and spring when teachers will complete a survey on their observations of students' skills and experiences. If you do not want your child to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form that was included in the Thursday folder or print one out by clicking here. Opt-out forms are due by September 24th.  If you give your permission, no further action is necessary.

For more information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, please visit the SEL Screener webpage. If you have questions, please contact your student's school counselor, Lisa Railan (LTRailan@fcps.edu) or Paula Augenstein (PHAugenstein@fcps.edu), or Jennifer Redford (jaredford@fcps.edu), Assistant Principal.

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Information Meeting

There will be a Sangster AAP Parent Information Meeting held virtually on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 7:00pm.  A link to the meeting will be provided closer to the meeting date. At the meeting, parents will learn about the levels of AAP service, learn how to refer students for the full-time Level IV center, and have the opportunity to ask questions.  This meeting is not intended for parents of students already enrolled in the Level IV AAP Center.

October 7, 2021 is also the deadline for parents of students in grades 3-6 who are new to Fairfax County as of January 1, 2021 to submit a Level IV referral form. Students found eligible would be enrolled in Level IV in the second semester.

Referral form:  https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/AAPLevelIVReferralForm_1.pdf

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Biberaj, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) at  lbiberaj@fcps.edu.

Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Sangster Elementary, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used.

You can find Sangster’s list of the digital resources that require parental consent here: https://sangsteres.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources.

You can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on our Sangster webpage is a link to the parent consent form where the enrolling parent/guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to the school if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

To provide your parental consent for each student in your family, please follow this link and follow the provided directions.

Schoology

Schoology

The School Based Technology Specialists of the West Springfield Pyramid have made this video to help parents with the basics of our new Learning Management System Schoology. Making sure you have an active parent account will help you in supporting your child’s learning as well as get communication from your child’s teacher and the school.

P2

Positivity Project

This year, Sangster will continue implementing the Positivity Project(P2). P2 is dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build strong relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all. Every 1-2 weeks, students learn about a new character strength.

Positivity Project - Week of Sep 19, 2021

This week’s character strength is Teamwork. Teamwork is the ability and willingness to place overall group success as a higher priority than individual achievement. Citizenship is a willingness to work towards the common good as opposed to one’s own self-interest. Those with strengths in teamwork and citizenship often work to help all group members find success. These individuals are willing to commit time and resources to further group goals and help move toward the greater good.

The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Next Week’s Character Strength:  Open-mindedness
