Thanks to all of the families who attended last night's PTA Ice Cream Social and Used Book Swap! It was great to see so many Lane Lions of all ages enjoying being back together at a school event while still being safe and healthy.

SR&R booklet

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) Parent Acknowledgement Online

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the Parent Acknowledgement. Please read the acknowledgement and sign your name. Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by October 29, 2021.

Please contact the school if you have difficulty accessing the booklet.

Color Week - orange

Mrs. Greene’s class glowed as they showed off their orange outfits this week.

Kindergarten Color Week 2 – Help Our Littlest Lions Learn Their Colors!

Kindergarteners are learning their colors, and students in other grades are encouraged to celebrate the rainbow along with them. We had great participation the first week and hope it continues! Here’s the schedule for week two:

  • Monday, September 20th: yellow
  • Tuesday, September 21st: purple or brown
  • Wednesday, September 22nd: pink or grey
  • Thursday, September 23rd: black and white
  • Friday, September 24th: rainbow day!

Please encourage your child – no matter what grade level – to join the colorful fun!

(Kindergarten parents: Because Kindergarten is also working on listening skills, students will be told what color to wear before the following day. Our hope is that students will listen and tell you the color at home. Please don’t share the secret!)

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) News

If you were unable to attend Tuesday’s Advanced Academic Program parent information session, you can find the recording here. Please contact Lane’s Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, Linda Simon, at lesimon@fcps.edu if you have questions.

New Virginia Growth Assessment Testing for Grades 3 Through 8

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a new test required for students in grades 3-8. The state legislature introduced this requirement to measure student growth and progress within the school year in reading and mathematics.

For fall 2021, VGA will address content that was taught in the previous school year. The purpose of this fall’s VGA is to identify potential learning gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no “passing” or “failing” outcome for the VGA. Results will provide a starting point to measure growth and will offer information about areas of strength and areas for growth in reading and mathematics.

Students enrolled in grades 3-8 will generally take an assessment in both reading and mathematics. However, elementary and middle school students enrolled in a high school credit-bearing math course, such as Algebra 1, will not take a VGA for mathematics.

The following points may help you and your student better understand this assessment.

  • VGA must be taken in-person at school.
  • This online, computer-adaptive test is about half as long as the spring SOL test.
  • Questions use Standards of Learning (SOL)-like items to measure current knowledge and skills in the content area.
  • Student results will be used to help school staff plan for instruction and supports.

Across Fairfax County, elementary and middle schools will give students the VGA in September-October.

If you have questions about this state assessment for your student, please contact the school test coordinators at Lane Elementary, Allen Dickens (adickens@fcps.edu) or Alexis Byam (avbyam@fcps.edu).

Donate Gently Used Preschool and Infant Toys

Do you have toys or books for very young children at home that your children have outgrown? If so, please consider donating them to our self-contained multiple abilities classrooms. Toys for infants up to preschoolers would be greatly appreciated, especially if they light up or make sounds. Please be sure they are easy to wipe clean or washed and that they have no small parts.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!
