Events on RRMS Website
Note from Dr. Goodloe:
Dear Rocky Run Families and Students,
I continue to be so proud of the ways in which our students and staff are engaging in learning and building relationships. There is so much positive energy in the building and daily we feel the JOY of having our students at Rocky Run. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.
20th Anniversary of 9/11:
September 11, 2001 I was in my first year as a school administrator, serving as a new AP in a FCPS elementary school on that tragic morning. Our first priority as we tried to comprehend the immense weight of the events of the day was maintaining calm and supporting our students who ranged in age from 5-12 years old. Later in the week we learned we had lost a parent in our community in the Pentagon and our school rallied to provide support to the family, as well as the first responders in our community. It was at that time that I recognized how important the idea of Together We is - we are not alone and we must take care of one another.
This week, we examine the events of 9/11 and share in a time of mourning, remembrance, and reflection as a school and community. At Rocky Run MS, and in all FCPS schools in grades 3-6, students will have the opportunity to learn about the events of 9/11, acknowledge shared history, and discuss how we move forward towards a better future. Curriculum resources have been provided to all Social Studies teachers and activities will be embedded in History and Civics classes. It is critical that we learn from the past and create a present where all are heard, seen, and welcomed.
I have appreciated hearing from many families with positive feedback and suggestions to improve our school operations. I welcome your questions, suggestions, and feedback. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Religious and Cultural Observances in our Community: Yom Kippur
In the next few weeks, some members of our community will be observing the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year for the Jewish people. This solemn day is spent fasting and in prayer; it begins this year at sundown on Wednesday, September 15th and ends at sundown on Thursday, September 16th. We wish all Rocky Run families who are observing these special days a happy and sweet new year, and encourage you to contact your child’s teachers to make arrangements for any absences due to family observances and celebrations.

Library Update
Welcome to a new school year! This week, we began hosting seventh-grade English classes for library orientation. Students have been excited to explore our space, learn the library procedures, and check out some books! All students will visit the library before September 16. We are looking forward to meeting new students and welcoming back returning students, too! Learn more about our library by visiting the library’s page on the Rocky Run website.
Students who still have library books from last year (even from elementary school!) or over the summer should return their books to the library as soon as possible. There is a blue and yellow mailbox outside Door 1 for book returns, and students can bring them to the library during the school day, as well. Please contact Mrs. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) if you have any questions about library books.
