At Bailey's Upper, our number one responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times. We continually work with county leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential safety concerns and we practice emergency drills on a regular basis throughout the school year.
Fire Drills
We will hold fire drills twice within the first 20 days of school. We will then have one per month thereafter. Only our first fire drill may be announced ahead of time. All subsequent drills must be unannounced ahead of time to students and staff. (Our first Fire Drill for this school year took place on August 27th).
Lockdown Drills
We are required to have two lockdown drills per school year with one within the first 20 days of school. We will notify the dates of lockdown drills ahead of time to parents. Our first lockdown drill for this school year will take place on Thursday, September 9th.
The purpose of a lockdown is to protect against intruders in the school building. Prior to the first lockdown drill, teachers will talk to our students about the purpose and practice the procedures to prepare them for our drill.
During a lockdown drill:
- Students stay in place with a teacher or staff member.
- Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper).
- Students and staff members disregard fire alarms and school-wide announcements.
- No one enters or exits the school, except public safety personnel.
Bus Evacuation Drills
Bus evacuation drills are required to be completed at least twice a year. One during the first 30 instructional days of the first semester and the other during the first 30 instructional days of the second semester.
Tornado Drills
Our tornado drill will be conducted in the month of March.

Would your student like to borrow some books to read? Good news! The Fairfax County Public Libraries are open!
In addition, the Library Equity Access Pass or LEAP project is being continued this year. Through this program, all students can borrow books from the local library by using their name and school. The library will use the FCPS student ID for their account.
- Students can check out up to 3 books at a time from any Fairfax County Public Library using their LEAP account.
- There are no fees charged for late or lost books. However, if books are not returned, students will not be able to borrow more books on their LEAP account.
- This account is for checking out physical books only. If a student would like to borrow ebooks or use other online resources, they should apply for a standard library card.
- To get a standard library card, go to Register for a New Library Account online to receive a temporary library card number by email. To get a permanent standard library card, please visit any FCPL branch within three weeks after your online card application. Photo ID and proof of address are needed to complete the application process.
Questions? Feel free to contact Linda Lindgren, librarian, at LCLindgren@fcps.edu.
If your child asks to go to the clinic and reports any COVID symptoms, the clinic aide will send the child to the CARES room. At that point we will call the family for student pick up and share this SICK STUDENT NOTIFICATION and RETURN to SCHOOL FORM. This is done under the direction of the Fairfax Health Department.

Bus stops and route information was shared with families via the ParentVue accounts on August 10. All staff and students riding a bus will be required to wear a mask.
