Franklin MS Weekly Update - September 2

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon. We used the positive momentum from the start of the school year to have a strong second week at Franklin MS. The FMS staff continues to be thankful for the opportunity to work with our students each and every day.

If you haven’t already, please mark your calendar for our Virtual Back to School Night event on Monday, September 13. You can find details about this opportunity below alongside our PTA Spirit Wear Sale and other upcoming events at our school.

At the start of next week, we will be sharing some important updates from our PTA. This is a wonderful organization to be a part of and there is a role for all families in this group. If you want to preview some of this information, you can check out the PTA website here.

We hope that all of you have a safe and healthy weekend and that it is an opportunity for you to spend time with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Math and Reading Inventory Assessments

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) uses the Math Inventory and Reading Inventory with secondary students in grades 7-12 to determine students’ strengths and needs in mathematics and literacy. All students in middle school and selected students in high school participate in these assessments.

The purpose of these assessments is to identify students who may benefit from additional support with literacy and mathematics skills. In addition, school teams will consider assessment results as they plan instruction for your student. Assessments are administered at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and initial performance, students may participate in follow-up assessment in the winter and/or in the spring.

Additional information about these assessments can be found at the following webpages:

If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s English or mathematics teacher.

School Safety and Security

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. Franklin MS will be practicing a lockdown drill during the month of September. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instructional and classroom based practice of what to do.
