What a great second week!

Students and staff are adjusting to the new routine of alternating days with our  21-22 schedule, behavior in the building is fantastic, and students and staff continue to be flexible as we adjust to our new normal. Speaking of schedules, it can be hard for middle school students to get used to the new alternating day schedule, but our Eagles are doing great! We wish every Monday could be an odd day but that’s just not the way it works. Click here so that you can see our blue yellow calendar and never be surprised by what day it is.

This week, we have reminded students of how to follow the SOAR traits when they enter the building and are in the hallways, we hope you will reinforce this message at home as well. Once students enter the building, we want at least one earbud/earphone put away so that students can hear staff direction in the halls. In addition, we ask that students remove hats and hoods and put masks on over the nose as they enter the building. Nearly every student is doing a great job with these protocol, and we appreciate it.

Very soon during TA (Teacher Advisory) we will participate in STAR - Students and Teacher are Reading. All students - and staff! - will need to have a book with them at all times. Our library is open for check out before school. Students can also request a pass from a teacher to go to the library before 2:00 PM to ensure they are ready for dismissal. Students who are not riding the 2:15 PM dismissal bus home may also check out books out after school.

Have a nice long weekend!

“Back to Basics” - Dress Code

After two weeks of students returning to school, it is great to see many unique styles and creative outfits in the clothes students wear to school everyday. Katherine Johnson Middle School recognizes that this age group of students is beginning to express themselves in what they wear, so we want to make sure parents are informed about the FCPS Dress Code policy. You can find more information in the Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook on page 15 and in Appendix D, page 13. For a great overview please take a few minutes to watch our featured “Back to Basics” video of the week entitled KJMS Dress Code Video. Links and the video will be send in a separate email.

Back to School Forms

We continue to use a digital format for our back to school forms. While some documents are purely for informational purposes, other forms are required for the start of school. Please take a moment to access the digital forms on our web site and return those that are applicable. Instructions for updating and returning the forms are listed on the web site.

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

If you have already provided these forms, there is no need to complete them again.  However, if there is a change, please re-submit the form(s) with the updated information.

The Health Information Form (HIF) (SS/SE -71) Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form (SS/SE-3) Emergency Care Information provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need health care support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in these forms to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

Save the Date!

On Thursday, November 11th we will be holding our Career Day. Be on the lookout soon for additional information if you would like to participate. The last time we held Career Day we had upwards of 50 different careers represented. We had a wonderful turn out in the Career Clusters of Education & Training and Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security. We would love more representation in Marketing, Manufacturing, and Architecture & Construction. Please consider joining us on that day to expose our students to all the different careers that are out there!

Picture Day

 Hearing and Vision Screening

This year we are going to have picture day and the hearing and vision screening on the same days, Thursday, September 23 and Friday, September 24. Student pictures will be taken through their PE class period.  Once done with pictures, they will proceed to the hearing and vision screening room. Ordering forms and link will be sent out approximately a week prior to picture day.

Parent Volunteers Needed for Screening of Vision/Hearing in September

Each year, State law requires that we do a vision and hearing screening for all 7th graders. Due to the school closure and COVID restrictions last year, we were unable to screen all 7th graders. Therefore, this year, we will screen all 1,000+ students. To do this, we need the help of many parent volunteers to help us execute the tasks smoothly. All training is on the job; you only to be willing to lend a hand. All volunteers, vaccinated or not, must wear a mask during the volunteer time. Thank you for helping us check up on all of our Eagles in this important way.  To sign up, complete the following Vision/Hearing Volunteer form.

Families, We Need Your Consent

for Select Digital Resources

At Katherine Johnson Middle School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://johnsonms.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to Kelsea Owens (kfowens@fcps.edu) if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
