Churchill Chatter - Issue 2, September 2, 2021

Dear Churchill Road Parents and Guardians,

We want to thank each of you for all of the wonderful support from our families as our staff worked to get this school year off to a great start.

Despite the transportation glitches, our first two weeks back for in-person learning has gone so well.  Our staff and students are collaborating to establish warm and welcoming classroom communities, and have put routines and procedures in place setting us all up for success this year.

We distributed over 600 laptops to our students, helped our new students navigate the building, and held a positive virtual Back to School Night.   It is a privilege to have our students back in the building, and we are excited about the year ahead.

Best wishes for a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.

Sincerely,

Cherith Pierson and Jen Niccolls

Student Illness Procedures

  • If your student is experiencing COVID-like symptoms/illness, please do not send them to school until they are symptom free. Review the Daily Health Screening. When in doubt, keep your child home if they have any illness. Your child may return the next day if they are feeling better and if they had a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, they are fever free and have not vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours.
  • In order to return to school, your student must be fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
  • While at school, students demonstrating any of the following symptoms will be sent home from school:   Fever (100.4 or greater) - Chills – Cough – Shortness of breath – Loss of taste/smell – Sore throat – Fatigue – Muscle aches – Runny Nose/Congestion – Stomachache – Diarrhea – Nausea/Vomiting – Headaches.  The parent/guardian will be notified and a SICK STUDENT NOTIFICATION and RETURN to SCHOOL FORM  will be sent home.
  • Unvaccinated students who are identified as a close contact with someone with COVID-19 must remain home for 14 days after their last exposure.
  • Fully vaccinated students who are identified as a close contact with someone with COVID-19 must remain home until your vaccination status is verified. Upon verification of vaccination status by the FCHD, and if the student/staff is asymptomatic, they may return to in-person learning and activities once notified by FCPS of their return date.

Please do not send your child to school if they have been identified as a close contact to COVID case.  A negative COVID test does not clear your child to return to school.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the Parent Acknowledgement. Please read the acknowledgement and sign your name. Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by October 29, 2021.

Please contact us if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.

Notification of Upcoming Testing

Universal Screener (iReady)

The online iReady assessment (also known as the universal screener) provides an initial view of all students’ foundational skills to help teachers identify students who may have challenges in reading or mathematics. This fall, students in grades 1-6 will take the iReady reading and mathematics assessments. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Universal Screener Parent Notification webpage.

For questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener- Wednesday, October 13th

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). The School Board has approved a screener to review students’ skills and experiences in these areas. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.

Students in grades K-2 will be screened in the winter and spring. In these grade levels, teachers will complete a survey on their observations of students' skills and experiences. Students in grades 3-12 will be screened in the fall, winter, and spring.

A letter with more information will be sent home in the students VIP folder on Wednesday, September 6th. Included, will be a form where parents can opt their child out of this screener. Please only return this form if you choose to opt your child out by Friday, October 8.

If you have any questions about either of these assessments, please contact Nick Kilpatrick (nfkilpatrick@fcps.edu), Churchill RoadTesting Coordinator.
