back to school

Welcome Back!

Dear Vienna Families,

After a year of being apart we are thrilled to be back together!  It is wonderful to see the reuniting of students, teachers and staff!

We will continue to follow the COVID protocols and keep you informed of any changes as we progress through the year. There are many ways you can help us to keep everyone safe and healthy.  Please make sure your child’s mask fits them securely over their nose and mouth.  Please make sure they bring a refillable water bottle to school each day and please remind your children to wash their hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer, many times throughout the school day.  All items such as water bottles, lunch boxes, jackets, etc. should have your child’s name clearly marked on them so that they can be returned should they be misplaced or forgotten.

We are aware that our kiss & ride line can be long and the wait can be frustrating, but please be patient as we all learn the routines and procedures.  We are building a strong team of student patrols and are thankful for all they do to help keep us safe as we walk home, ride the bus, and reunite at kiss & ride.

Even under a mask, we feel the smiles of all of our staff and students.  Our teachers are beyond thrilled to fill their classrooms with your children and we thank you for trusting us to do everything in our power to keep them safe, happy and learning.

Sincerely,

John Carmichael and Eben Montaquila

Administrative Team

Back To School Night

BTSN will take place on Tuesday, August 31st from 6-7:30pm.  We know that this does not work for every family and that some families may feel uncomfortable being in a building with so many others.  To that end, our grade level teachers are working on some voice over slides that will be placed on our school website so that you can review that information at a time that is convenient for you.  These slides will provide information regarding classroom/grade level expectations, routines, schedules, etc.

For those that decide to come in-person, teachers will be conducting a sample activity of what takes place in their classroom such as morning meeting, reading, writing, or math workshop.  This evening is for parents/guardians only.  Masks are required to be worn properly at all times regardless of vaccination status.  Please remember that BTSN is not a time for individual conference.  If you do wish to talk with your child’s teacher, please email them and they will work with you to get a meeting scheduled.

Birthday Treat Policy

Birthdays happen frequently throughout the year.  While families may enjoy sending in special food treats with their child, this practice presents a serious risk for the growing number of students with severe food allergies and food sensitivities.  In addition, frequent sugary treats do not support a healthful environment for learning at school.

To address issues of safety and health, Vienna Elementary has provided a few suggestions below.

To celebrate a student's birthday at school, parents may coordinate with the classroom teacher on the following:

  1. The student may invite a special guest reader to share a story with the class
  2. The student may purchase a game for the classroom to be used during indoor recess
  3. The student may donate a book to the classroom library

Save the Date

There is no school on Friday, September 3rd and Monday, September 6th.

No Dogs and Pets on School Grounds

Dogs and other pets are not allowed on Vienna Elementary School grounds. Do not bring dogs or other pets on school grounds during arrival, dismissal or during the school day. Fairfax County Health Department and FCPS policies prohibit the presence of dogs and pets on school grounds for health and safety purposes. Thank you for following these polices for students’ health and safety.

Girls on the Run

Registration is now open for the Girls on the Run program at Vienna Elementary! By using a curriculum that creatively integrates running with life lessons, Girls on the Run empowers girls in 3rd to 6th grade to develop the confidence and character they need to become strong and healthy young adults. Through safety and physical distancing modifications, GOTR NOVA will be able to continue to bring critical social/emotional programming to girls this Fall. Registration for the Fall 2021 program is open from August 9th through September 7th, and the season will run from the week of September 13th until November 21st, culminating in a GOTR 5k event  For more information, go to the Girls on the Run of NOVA website (www.gotrnova.org) or contact the VES Girls on the Run team coordinator - Erin Moseley erinomoseley@gmail.com.
