Important information from Hughes Middle School

Principal's Message

Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students,

We had a strong and safe start to the school year! Students and staff are building a sense of community to ensure that all students feel welcome and that they belong here.  We have already jumped into the content of our courses and familiarized ourselves with school tools that are resources for the students.  Please enjoy this video of the highlights of the week and thank you for your support of your student and our school.

Assistant Principal and Director of Student Services Messages

Away for the Day:

At LHMS, we value P.O.W.E.R.ful classroom instruction and engagement.  To support this mindset, we are an “Away for the Day” school.  Students are permitted to use their devices until 7:30, during lunch while in the cafeteria, and after dismissal.  Cell phone/device usage (including earbuds, AirPods, and headphones) are not permitted during class or in the hallways during class transitions.  Cell phones are not allowed at any time in restrooms or locker rooms.  Please reinforce this message with your students at home and reach out to your student’s grade level administrator with any questions you might have.

Parent/Caregiver Preview of FLE Curriculum Materials:

In accord with the code of Virginia, parents/caregivers are able and encouraged to review curriculum materials for the FCPS Family Life Education lessons.  A folder, Parent Preview - FLE Instruction will be uploaded to Schoology by September 2, 2021 that includes links to the lessons, slide presentations, and media for which FCPS has purchased streaming rights. Some media titles may only be available for parents to view at the school.  Opt-out forms were included in our back to school paperwork should you like to opt your child out of any or all FLE lessons.  Please contact your student’s health & physical education teacher or assistant principal Amy Smith should you have specific questions you’d like addressed.

LOCKERS

Student may request  a locker if they feel that they will need one for the 2021-2022 school year. Traditionally, many of our students use their lockers in a very limited way, and find it easier to stay organized and be more prepared for class by keeping materials in their backpacks as opposed to having some materials with them and others in a locker.

Locker request forms are available on the Langston Hughes Student All Course in Schoology. You can also access the form here: Locker Request Form. Our Student Services office will process locker requests and distribute locker assignments during the first month of school.  Please keep in mind, that if a student requests a locker, the combination may not be shared, and the locker may only be used by the student assigned.

Please note that there will be still be gym lockers assigned to all students for PE classes and music lockers available to store instruments.

Everything Transportation

Traffic Patterns

  • Door #1 (aka Main Office/Flagpole Side/ Seahawk Drive)
  • This is where the bus loop is. This is not where students should be dropped off or picked up between the hours of 7:00 – 7:30 AM and 2:00- 2:45 PM. Dropping off or picking up students on Seahawk Drive or the school parking lot is not permitted from 7:00-7:30 a.m.; it creates a traffic jam and causes additional safety problems with the arrival and departure of the school buses and staff.
  • Door #6 (aka Ridge Heights Road Kiss & Ride)
  • Students driven to and from school should use the Kiss & Ride area on Ridge Heights Road. Kiss & Ride is open from 7:10 – 7:25 a.m.

Fairfax Connector Bus Passes

Students can get a Fairfax Connect Bus Pass application in the main office or during their lunch period; after the student and parent/guardian review and sign the form, it needs be turned into the main office. A pass will be activated and issued to the student within a few days.

There is no fee to get into the Block Party. Some groups will be selling items (cash) and the food trucks will have items for sale (typically cash and charge). We hope to see you there!

First Home Varsity Football Game – see Cheer, Dance and Marching Band too!

Come join the fun as we kick-off the official start of the football season Friday night at 7:00PM.  Support of Cheerleaders on the sidelines along with Dance and Band who will be performing at half-time. Please note, students will not be permitted to bring backpacks into the stadium for games.  We will have no place to store them if you do.  Please leave all personal belongings at home.

Tickets:

The South Lakes Athletic Department is excited to share that we have a new digital ticketing system, eTIX.  Tickets are now available online for our 2021 Fall season!  To purchase tickets in advance, use this link  to select the event for which you want tickets, then use your credit card information to purchase the number of tickets you want. You will receive a confirmation email for your purchase, and you will pull up that email on your phone to present to the ticket booth, scanning your ticket. This same procedure will also be used for those who wish to make credit card purchases for tickets at the gate on the day of the event.

Purchasing your ticket ahead of time will save you time at the gate.  If you forget to purchase your tickets ahead of time, we will have QR codes posted at the gate to scan and purchase your tickets on your phone.

Click here to order your tickets.  We will send this link each week in the Athletics news you choose https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/16169/south-lakes-high-school-athletics

Gates will open 45 minutes prior to the listed start time.

Current Mask Requirement (8-25-21)– please plan ahead

While masks are not required outside for those who are vaccinated, we are expecting a crowd at the first home football game. We strongly encourage all fans, adults, and students, to wear a mask if they are in close proximity to others

m

Our Health and Safety Guidance Webpage has the most current information about our layered prevention strategies, what happens if your child becomes ill at school, and the process when there is a pause in instruction or activities after a positive COVID case.

4

Mask Up! View your mask as your superhero cloak. Masks are not simply a piece of fabric we are told to wear. They have superpowers. Masks are an effective tool to keep ourselves and others safe and keep students learning together in classrooms.

3

Vax Up! Vaccination is the key to moving us all out of the pandemic and reducing the need for pauses in in-person learning. If you haven’t done so already, get vaccinated today

3

Wash Up and Cover Up! Washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and other good hygiene practices are easy. Yet these are simple things we can do every day to stay healthy and stop germs from spreading

l

Hold Up! Pause before heading to school or work. Do you feel sick? Are you having any symptoms of COVID-19? If so, stay home until you are better.
