Hello Families,
We are excited to have the students back in school and partnering with you to make this a successful school year. In spite of some of the measures that are in place, there are many happy faces and lots of buzz in the building. Students are so excited to see their friends and teachers face to face and not on a screen. My highlight this week was visiting our STEAM Lab and observing third graders using their creativity, collaboration and problem solving skills as engineers building towers. They were highly engaged being problem solvers and practicing 21st Century skills.
As you know, dismissal has had its challenges with late buses and a very long Kiss and Ride line. We are working as fast and efficiently as we can to solve issues and smooth dismissal. We thank you for your continued patience and ask that you please help us by attending to the following:
- Kiss and Ride has a lot of vehicles at dismissal. Students are dismissed first to head to the gym to be ready for pick-up. Due to the variety of staff on duty, students are given numbers to help speed the process. If you do not have a number please let us know so that we can provide your child their Kiss and Ride number.
- If you are picking up your child through Kiss and Ride, please stay in the line and be patient. Parking your car along the street or in our school parking lot and walking to the front of the school only makes dismissal more difficult. Also, students should ONLY enter on the passenger side and not between cars which is a safety hazard.
- If you decide to change the way in which your child goes home, you MUST call the office to let us know. If you change without notifying us, it is difficult for us to find the child quickly and it requires extra work for staff members on dismissal duty. If possible, please communicate any transportation changes to the front office by 3:00 p.m., so that we have time to be sure that the student and teacher are aware of the change.
- All staff working through dismissal have the children’s best interest in mind. Thank you for being kind and patient when you interact with staff.
Again, thank you for your support and patience. We are here to serve you.
Sincerely,
Eric T. Johnson
Principal

Students are back to school. It’s exciting and yet, the transition from summer to the school year may be difficult for children and parents. Everyone must adjust to greater levels of activity and structure. Parents can help their children manage the increased pace of life by planning, being realistic, and maintaining a positive attitude. |
A successful start to the school year will positively impact a child's attitude, confidence, and school performance both socially and academically. Consider a few suggestions from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) to ease the transition back to school.
- Let your children know you care. If your children are anxious about school, offer encouraging words. Send a personal note in the lunch box or book bag.
- Review the paper packets or emails that are sent from the school for important forms and information.
- Visit the school’s website to check the school’s calendar and announcements.
- Establish a family calendar with school and family activities.
- Define the family after-school plans and procedures for your children.
- Designate and clear a place at your home to do homework.
- Reestablish bedtime and mealtime routines.
These are a few suggestions to help ease the transition and promote a successful school experience.

Water Bottles
Due to COVID-19, school water fountains are not available. We encourage parents to send an empty reusable water bottle in their child’s backpack, which can be filled at classroom sinks.
Screen for Illness Every Day, Stay Home When Sick
One of the most important prevention strategies guidelines is screening students daily for any signs of illness prior to leaving home for school. Any student who is ill or has COVID-like symptoms should remain at home. The daily health screening questionnaire and all translated versions can be found on our Health and Safety Guidance webpage.
This document provides the details of the policies and protocols related to COVID-19, and it is continually updated to align with public health guidance as it evolves during the school year. Daily completion of the health screening is done on an honor basis and does not need to be sent to the school.
Read more about checking for symptoms and how to prepare to return to school after illness.
