Message from Dr. Floyd

TGIF Woodson!

Our first week back with the students is over!  I thoroughly enjoyed having our students back in person.  The energy the kids bring is invigorating to say the least!

I want to bring a couple of items to your attention from this week.

First, today students did their Students Rights and Responsibilities lesson.  This was a video and quiz. You can review the information presented at this link. Part of the SRR is a reminder of respect towards all.

I expect all students and staff to respect and honor our diverse community, and build a culture of inclusivity and equity, all day, every day, year round. Should your teen experience bullying or harassment, especially around gender, race, identity, culture, or around anything else that makes them the unique person who they are, please let an adult know – email me directly at cefloyd@fcps.edu!  We will not tolerate any form of hate or discrimination at Woodson HS.

The SRR also includes the topic of clothing. Throughout this week we have reminded students about appropriate school dress. Thankfully, almost all of our students are appropriately dressed for school. Please review the entire SRR, including the clothing section, as we do not want students to have to change because of something on their shirt or because their outfit exposes excessive amounts of skin.

Please note that often students come with a button up shirt over an inappropriate top, so I ask parents to be aware that this is happening.  I appreciate your support and assistance in this matter.

It is bitter sweet to announce that assistant principal Dr. Hewan is leaving us for Arlington County Public Schools. He was selected as the next principal of the Schriver Program for students who have special needs. Over his last three years at Woodson, Dr. Hewan has impacted our school through the relationships he has built with staff, students and the community.  He was integral in developing our Equity program and has been a champion for Cultural Responsiveness at Woodson HS. We wish him all the best in his next adventure and will miss his energy and enthusiasm. Dr. Hewan’s last day at Woodson is Wednesday, September 1st and we will announce plans for this position in the coming week.

Hope you are all able to stay cool this weekend!

Dr. Floyd
Principal

2. We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources - ACTION ITEM

At Woodson High School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.

We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your teachers and counselors if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

4. Attendance FAQs

How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

My student will be arriving late to school. How do I let Attendance know?

Please let the Attendance Office know if your student will arrive late to school.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form to report a late arrival or partial day absence.
  • Student brings a handwritten note from a parent or doctor with the reason for the late arrival. Please include the student’s name, time the student is coming to school, the reason for the tardy, a parent/guardian signature, the student ID, and contact phone number for follow-up.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 2. Please include the student’s name, time the student is coming to school and the reason for the tardy.
  • If a student does not have a note, he/she will be marked "unexcused tardy" and must present a note to the Attendance Office within 48 hours for the tardy to be changed to excused.

Valid tardiness reasons include illness, medical appointments or family emergency. The following will not be excused: oversleeping, power outages, car trouble, traffic, and missing the bus. Students will be given a pass to enter their assigned class after checking in at the Attendance office.

My student will be out for a college visit.  How do I let Attendance know?

For prearranged Absences (family, college trips, medical reasons), please notify the Attendance Office with the following:

  • Student must bring a written notice to the attendance office at least 5 days prior to the intended absence. Please include the student's name, dates of absences, and reason for the absence.
  • Student will receive a prearranged absence form for teachers to sign, list the assignments, and due dates.
  • Extended Absences: If a student requires long-term medical care, parents should contact their child's school counselor. To find out who your child's counselor is, check the Student Services staff list

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.

5. Family Life Education - Info Night and Opt Out Forms

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

The Woodson FLE Parent Information Night will take place on Tuesday, September 14th at 5:00pm (an hour before the PTSO meeting) in the Library.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle.  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

9. Volunteers Needed

In an effort to increase the outdoor space during lunch time, we have ordered more picnic tables. But in order to use them, we need volunteer help with student supervision.

The responsibilities will be sitting and watching students at lunch time, outside and ensuring they are safe and not leaving campus. In the event of an emergency, we will provide you access to security / administrators. There will be minimal interaction with students but in order to provide additional outdoor space, we need help.

If you interested in volunteering OUTSIDE on school days from 11:15am – 1:20pm, please email Celeste Jones at cbjones@fcps.edu.

We ask all volunteers to complete the COVID health screening questionnaire before volunteering each day. Thank you!

10. Safety and Security Drills

Every school facility in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly. Now, we, along with other Fairfax County schools, have formally added an additional drill, called a lockdown drill.

A lockdown is a well-established procedure designed to protect students and staff members in a case in which there might be threats of violence within a school. During a lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or are escorted to classrooms if they are in the halls, and all interior and exterior doors are closed and locked. Once the facility is rendered safe and students are accounted for, the school is returned to normal operation.

While we have no reason to believe that any threat of violence will arise, it is always best to be prepared. It is important to train students and staff members so that we can effectively implement a lockdown in the event one becomes necessary. Training helps ensure a calmer, more effective lockdown.

The state has mandated that a school conduct monthly fire drills and four lockdown drills every year.  Our first lockdown drill will take place next Thursday, September 2nd

We will continue to keep you informed of safety and security measures in place at Woodson.  We appreciate your continued support in these matters.
