From the desk of Mr. Smith!

Dear DRES Families,

Welcome to the 2021-22 school year! On behalf of our entire staff we are extremely excited to have all of our students back in the building this year.  Our theme this year is "Many Paths...One Journey".  We have had a great week of reconnecting and professional learning as a staff this past week and we are ready to go!  We are all on an adrenaline high after meeting many of our students and families during the Welcome Walk yesterday.  Parents/Guardians are welcome to walk their child to class on Monday.

Some updates:

  • Click here to view our parent Q & A session from 8/16.
  • Parents, caregivers or guardians, are strongly encouraged to monitor their children for symptoms of infectious illness every day through home-based symptom screening and students who are sick should not attend school.
  • Masks are required at all times inside the building for all students, staff and visitors unless they are eating.
  • We have expanded our seating in the cafeteria to allow more space between students as they eat.
  • Please be patient with our arrival and dismissal process the first few weeks of school.  FCPS has a severe shortage of bus drivers and kiss and ride traffic may be heavier than usual so please be patient as we ensure that all of our students arrive and depart school safely.

Have a great weekend, we can't wait to see everyone Monday morning!

Please call (703-279-8400) or email us here at school if there is anything we can do to help you or your family.

Kiss and Ride Information

Welcome to the new school year. This is to inform you of our Kiss and Ride procedures for the end of the day. During the first week of school we will be distributing a Kiss and Ride card. Please place it on the passenger side dashboard of your vehicle with your child’s name and grade level. All students will be waiting in the cafeteria and we will be calling students to cars as you arrive. Beginning September 7th  if you do not have the card on your dashboard you will be asked to park and come in to the office to pick up your child. Please be sure to get as many vehicle cards as you need to ensure that all your vehicles can display the card.

As a reminder students should only be entering and exiting cars from the passenger side of the vehicle. Also, students will be dismissed to a vehicle ONLY. Please do not walk up to the cafeteria exit door to pick up your child.

We thank you in advance for your flexibility and help with ensuring the safety of the children.

During the month of August (8/1-8/31), students and families are invited to take a walk through Fairfax City as they read pages from a book displayed in business storefront windows.  The Katherine Johnson StoryWalk®  will feature two different books for students to read along the way, one in Old Town Fairfax City and the other in Fair City Mall. To start the walk, students and families can pick up an official map at the City of Fairfax Regional Library at 10360 North Street, participating businesses, download a StoryWalk®  map or Google form for each book below.  With the map in hand, follow the route to read the book.  Each business will have a new set of pages to read.  Enjoy the StoryWalk®  at your own pace but make sure to follow the path in the correct order.  Fill in the blanks with the missing words or look for the answer on the page.

Completed maps should be emailed to EconomicDevelopment@fairfaxva.gov no later than Sunday, September 5.  The first 100 completed maps received for each story will receive a copy of the book and be entered into a raffle drawing to win one of six gift cards to a Fairfax City business of choice.
