Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson families,

Monday morning we will welcome back our students to the building for our 2021-2022 school year. We are excited to fill the halls with the buzz of 2489 students moving from class to class.

I wish everyone a calm and restful weekend. As you send your high schooler off on Monday, please send them with a mask and a back up mask in case something happens to the first one. Should something happen to mask number two, please have your high schooler come to the front office and we will give them one.

Most FAQ today – where to find the bus information?  It can be located in 3 places.  The SIS ParentVUE Mobile App, SIS ParentVUE online version and in an email sent last week from FCPS Office of Transportation Services.

SIS ParentVUE Mobile App: - Login and select your child, then select Student Info. At the bottom of the screen you will see white text “Additional Information.”  Tap on the Additional Information text then scroll down to Transportation and you will be able to view the bus information.

SIS ParentVUE on the computer:  Login and select Student Info on the left menu. Then scroll down to Transportation and you will be able to view the bus information.

Transportation also sent emails to families with bus route information. The email was sent via e-Notify and is from the Office of Transportation Services with the subject "Student Route Assignment."

Please let your administrator or me know if you have questions over the weekend.  Contact us by clicking on our names located on the Administrator page of the Woodson Website.

Stay well,

Dr. Floyd
Principal

2. Seniors Only - SAT School Day Information - Intent to Participate Form Due Wednesday, September 8th

FCPS will continue the practice of offering the SAT School Day to all students in grade 12 at no cost.

This year, the test will be administered on Wednesday, October 13.

To guarantee participation in SAT School Day exams, students must submit their online intent form by Wednesday, September 8.

Woodson HS: SAT School Day Intent to Participate Form

Your student will need to use a @fcpsschools.net email account to access and complete this form.

FCPS sites cannot accept walk-ins on the day of the exam.

General information about the SAT School Day test format is available on the College Board webpage (https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/taking-the-test/sat-in-school).

We will share exam day schedules and additional details in the coming weeks. If you have questions about the SAT School Day administration at Woodson High School, please contact Woodson’s SAT School Day Coordinator, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.

3. New Attendance Form

Woodson has a new online Attendance Form!

Submitting a student absence has never been easier thanks to our new online attendance form! With our new website comes a new attendance form that allows parents/guardians to submit absences online.

Submit an absence using our online attendance form.

The previous way of submitting absences via telephone at 703-503-4800 will continue to always be an option.

The other ways to access the attendance form are through the full menu, through the homepage footer (below the attendance phone number), and the about page on the Woodson School website.

For details on Woodson's attendance procedures, please visit the Woodson Attendance site.

Clubs and Activities Table at Cav Kickoff

At Cav Kickoff, students had the opportunity to learn about many clubs and activities.

4. Kiss and Ride Procedures

The Safety and Security Team would like to highlight the Kiss and Ride procedures, especially for those parents of our students new to Woodson.

  • Please make sure that your child is dropped off before 8:00 a.m.
  • The morning and afternoon Kiss and Ride locations are in the front of the school, extending from Doors #1 to #3 and in the rear of the school by Doors #8 and #9.
  • It is imperative to the flow of traffic that all cars pull forward as far as possible to drop off their student.
  • During the morning, students are only allowed to be dropped off at Kiss and Ride locations. Students are not allowed to be dropped off in the rear parking lot or in school parking spaces. The rear parking lot is for staff members and students who have purchased parking passes.
  • Safety and Security Team Members are outside to assist each morning and afternoon.

We recommend that new parents become familiar with the locations before the start of school, to see which of the locations is the most convenient for them.

The keys to a successful Kiss and Ride are to obey all posted stop signs and school signs, follow any directions given, and to follow the flow of traffic.

5. Student Laptop Distribution

Students will receive their FCPS issued laptop on the first day of school, Monday, August 23rd during their 3rd period class, "Learning Seminar/Advisory."

After the first day, laptop distribution will take place from the Library.

6. Advisors and Counselors - What is the difference?

All students will participate in 3rd period or Learning Seminar/Advisory.  Third period teachers are the "advisors" as part of their role as the Advisory Teacher.  It is just a fancy name for teacher.

The school counselors are still the school counselors. For a list of our Student Services and school counselor contact information, visit our Student Services site.

Marching Cavaliers

The Marching Cavaliers welcomed students to Cav Kickoff.

7. What Will Lunch Look Like?

  • Where will students be eating their meals? Students are divided into 4 lunches A, B, C, D by course.  Students learn their lunch period on the first day of school.  Lunch is during periods 5/6. Students may eat in the cafeterias (either A or B) or in the courtyard behind cafeteria A (picnic tables and under the tent) or the courtyard between entrance 18/19. We also allow students to eat in the auditorium lobby on the benches.
  • How much does lunch cost? Breakfasts and lunches are free this school year.
  • How are you seating students?  Students will use the cafeteria tables to eat at and may only remove masks when actively eating.
  • What do students do after they finish eating?  Students may remain at the table but must wear their masks.
  • Will school staff be available to help students follow layered prevention strategies?  Staff will be in the cafeteria to remind students of the mask policy.
  • Lunch volunteers (who need to follow all FCPs protocols around masking and layered prevention strategies)
  • How are you handling the serving line? Students will wear masks in the serving line.
  • Are you offering a hot lunch?  We will find out next week.
  • Are water fountains in use? No. Bottle filling stations are available and students are encouraged to bring their own bottles.
  • Will students wash their hands before and after meals? Students are encouraged to wash before and after lunch and use the hand sanitizer available in the cafeterias.
  • How will tables be cleaned and how often?  Tables are all cleaned between lunches.  We will dismiss students at least 5 minutes early from lunches so we can begin to clean tables.  Students who are not finished eating may use their full time to eat and we will not seat students at those tables at the start of the next lunch period.

8. We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Woodson High School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.

We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your teachers and counselors if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
