RECEIVING A RESPONSE FOR EVERY STUDENT IS CRITICAL. PLEASE SEE BELOW.
At Colin Powell Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Our teachers have been working hard to create engaging and fun activities that build community in our classroom environments for our students. These activities may include the use of digital resources/applications on the first day of school. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://powelles.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources
Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form by as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher or Nichole Lansdowne, School-Based Technology Specialist (SBTS), nalansdowne@fcps.edu if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
The consent form consists of the following four steps:
- Parents/guardians access and login to the online form using your child’s student ID number and your parent email or phone number
- Parents/guardians will verify their identify by entering a security code sent to parent’s email address or mobile phone
- Digital signature agreement - Parents/guardians must agree to using a digital signature.
- Parents/guardians respond to the form, either consent to use of all the digital tools on the CPES list or do not give consent to use one or more of the digital tools on the list. If no, please provide comments in the box provided. You will receive a confirmation email once you submit the form.
FCPS is ready for a strong return to school on August 23. The Return to School webpage and FAQs webpage are regularly updated with the latest return to school information.
When we return strong this fall, FCPS’ Food and Nutrition Services staff will be ready to serve healthy meals to students and staff. This year, all students receive FREE breakfast and lunch. Find out more about school meals here.
We are returning to our pre-COVID approach to lunch and all students will be eating lunch in the cafeteria. They will be seated at our traditional lunch tables. During lunch the students will remove their mask while they are actively eating and put their mask back on when they are done.
To support the FCPS Office of Transportation Services in planning for the 2021-22 school year, we ask that all families with eligible bus riders complete the School Year 2021-22 Bus Ridership Intent form found here. Please complete a survey for each of your children. If you are unsure of your child’s ID number, please log-in to your SIS ParentVue account.
You will be able to see your student's bus information in your SIS ParentVue account starting on Friday, August 13.
Please remember we all play a role in providing a safe arrival and dismissal for our students every day. To ensure everyone’s safety, follow the guidelines outlined below.
- The parking lot off Leland Road in front of the main door is open to buses only during arrival and dismissal or when buses are loading and unloading.
- For everyone’s safety, obey traffic laws and DO NOT drive the wrong way down the road into the parking lot off Arrowhead Road.
- If possible, riding the bus is always the best option!
Arrival 8:55-9:10 AM
- Kiss ‘N Ride
- Parents may drop off students off at school via the Kiss ‘N Ride line in the parking lot off Arrowhead Road after 8:55 AM. Do not allow students to leave your car prior to 8:55 AM.
- Parking for Drop-Off in Front of the School (Door 1)
- If you plan to park and walk your child(ren) to the front of the building, you must park in the upper lot indicated on the map.
- For everyone’s safety, all children must be escorted to the front of the building following the blue path indicated on the map.
Dismissal – 4:00 to 4:15 PM
- Kiss ‘N Ride:
- Only students who live outside of our school’s boundaries may acquire a vehicle number for Kiss ‘N Ride.
- Pick up will begin at 4:00 PM and students will be called by Kiss ‘N Ride number. If you do not have a Kiss ‘N Ride number, you will be required to park and walk to the front of the building to pick up your child(ren).
- Parking for Pick-Up in Front of the School
- If you plan to pick your child(ren) up from the front of the school, please park in the top row of the parking lot as indicated on the map.
You must walk to the front of the building to meet your child(ren) and walk them on the sidewalk to the car via the blue path indicated on the map.
To ensure our schools stay open and safe this school year, all schools across FCPS will start the school year with universal masking. Masks will be worn at all times by both staff and students indoors and on school buses, but are not required when eating or when outside during recess, PE, or other activities.
Universal masking is a critical factor in ensuring all students can return to our buildings, especially when social distancing is not possible and not all our students are eligible yet for vaccinations. FCPS will be regularly reviewing our masking practices in line with updates to national, state and local health recommendations. Find out why we are starting the school year with universal masking
The School Age Child Care Program (SACC) will provide before and after school services beginning August 23, 2021. Enrollment is now open.
All SACC locations that were available in March 2021, with the exception of Spring Hill 2, will be open for the 2021-22 school year.
Additional information, including how to enroll, is available online.
The Fairfax County School Board voted to approve a calendar for the 2021-22 School Year that is designed to recognize, respect, and honor the plurality of religious and cultural observances in Fairfax County. The calendar ensures students will not have to make choices between honoring their cultural or religious beliefs and missing a test or school activity.
On the 15 observance days listed below, Powell ES will not schedule tests or quizzes. Tests and quizzes will be given before any of these days, so students are not expected to study on the observance day.
In addition, Powell ES will not schedule events such as field trips on any of the 15 observance days.
The calendar recognizes 15 diverse religious and cultural observances including:
- Eid al-Adha
- Rosh Hashanah
- Yom Kippur
- Día de los Muertos
- Diwali
- Bodhi Day
- Three Kings Day/Epiphany
- Orthodox Christmas
- Orthodox Epiphany
- Lunar New Year
- Ramadan
- Good Friday
- Theravada
- Orthodox Good Friday/Last Night of Passover
- Eid al-Fitr
The 2021-22 calendar also separates spring break from any religious or cultural observances.
