Gator Bytes: News and General Information for Kings Glen ES

Dear Kings Glen Families,

We are excited to welcome everyone back to the 2021-2022 school year!  We have been busy preparing for students to return to in-person learning. There is a great deal of positive energy as we welcome in the new year.

As we look forward to students returning on Monday, August 23rd, we want you to know that all staff at Kings Glen are focused on a strong start to the school year.  This start includes our commitment to support student and families in the areas of safety, academics, social emotional learning and on strengthening positive relationships with the entire school community.

Welcome Walks and Student Class Placement Information

Kings Glen Staff is excited to be doing Gator Welcome Walks on Tuesday, August 17th between 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. this year. The Welcome Walk is an informal time for you and your child to meet your child's teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.  Classroom teachers, accompanied by additional Kings Glen staff, will be coming to the home of each of their homeroom students for a brief door visit to welcome students and families to the new school year. Please note that staff members are not permitted inside homes during the Gator Welcome Walks.

If your family is not available for the Gator Welcome Walks, or you wish to opt out, please email kgnotes@fcps.edu and the staff members will not come to your home.  An email will be sent from the classroom teachers by Tuesday, August 17th at 12 noon to introduce themselves and inform families of the class placements.

Lunch Information

Kings Glen is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our staff and students throughout the entire school day, including lunchtime, when students will not be able to wear masks while eating.

We know that the situation at lunchtime is raising many questions, and at Kings Glen we are committed to making sure the structure of lunchtime works as safely and efficiently as possible.

  • Students will be required to wear masks in the cafeteria when not actively eating and drinking, including when students go through the lunch serving line. Seating charts will also be used.
  • Cafeteria spaces will be regularly and thoroughly cleaned with a sanitizing solution.
  • Our lunchtime scheduling is being adjusted to ensure maximum spacing when students are eating.  All students will be facing the same direction while in the cafeteria and students will be in the cafeteria for 20 minutes.  Supervision is provided for students should an individual student require additional time to finish his/her meal.
  • Students will wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer before and after eating.
  • FCPS Food Nutrition Services works closely with the Fairfax County Health Department to ensure proper food safety and sanitation.

As a reminder, all students will be offered both no cost breakfast and lunch for the entire school year.

Consent for Digital Resources

Our Kings Glen teachers and staff will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://kingsglenes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources . Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their child can access digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible. Your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.

updated mask requirements Aug 2021

Update on Mask Requirement

Last week, FCPS updated mask requirements for staff. As 99.5% of staff and students begin to return to buildings and the Delta variant continues to see an uptick, FCPS’ universal indoor masking requirement is now extended to everyone

Please note: Governor Northam just announced universal masking indoors for all K-12 schools. FCPS is aligned with the state mandate.
