Annandale Students, Families and Community:

We are a little more than a week away from the opening of the 2021-22 school year. Hopefully this edition of the Insider will answer many of the questions that you may have before the start of school next Monday.

This Thursday, August 19, we are excited to welcome students and parents into the building at our “Freshmen, Sophomore & New Student Orientation'' and “Open House”. Additionally, in partnership with Fairfax County Health Department, we will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in the Upper Gym 12:00-5:00pm.

“Freshmen, Sophomore & New Student Orientation” will begin at 1:30pm. Below are the highlights of the event. Free bus transportation to and from the event is available. Check out the orientation transportation route schedule to find the bus stop nearest to your location.

  • Annandale Welcome & Pep Rally: Students and families will meet in the gym and be welcomed to Annandale HS with a performance by our band & cheerleaders. Students and families will meet the school principal, administration team, counselors, and student leaders.
  • Breakout Room: Students will meet in small groups to get a printed version of their schedules and meet and greet with their counselor and alpha administrator.
  • Family Coffee: During this time, families are welcome to join us in Clausen Hall to learn more about various resources available to them and their students at Annandale.
  • School Exploration: Upon receiving their schedules, students will then have an opportunity to walk their schedules and explore important locations in the building.
  • Closure: At this time, students will return to their breakout room locations and get their class t-shirts. They will be dismissed from these breakout room locations.

“Open House” will be held from 3:30-4:30pm and provide students an opportunity to walk through our halls and find their classes for next year. There is no formal program during this time, but rather an informal chance to get reacquainted with AHS.

Student schedules will be available in SIS StudentVue and SIS ParentVue this Thursday, August 19 at 6:00am. For more information about obtaining a ParentVue account, please click here to access support on the FCPS website.

Finally, the PSTA is hosting a welcome-back breakfast for staff on Thursday. Please consider joining the PTSA by filling out the online 2021–22 Membership Form. For more information about membership, visit the PTSA Membership page.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Student Bus Route Assignments: FCPS Office of Transportation Services emailed student bus route assignments on Friday, August 13. Please note that the provided times are estimates and that buses may be delayed due to weather, traffic conditions, and a national and regional driver shortage.  Please check the Here Comes the Bus app or FCPS School Bus Delays website for potential delays. Students are expected to be at their bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. A double back route assignment may require your bus schedule to be adjusted earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. FCPS will send out a final bus schedule on August 19.

Student Laptop Distribution: Students will receive their FCPS issued laptop in their W4 class on the first day of school August 23. The first day of school will feature a special schedule with all students reporting to their W4 class to receive their laptop. This special schedule will provide teachers the opportunity to plan activities that include technology on the first day of school and send the message of the importance of social-emotional support in our W4 lessons. If you have any questions, please email Brian Valentine at bvalentine@fcps.edu.

Kiss and Ride: Student drop off/pick up (aka Kiss and Ride) is conducted at the main entrance (door #1). Parents should drop off their student(s) no earlier than 7:50am. Students are dismissed from school at 2:55pm. If you have any questions, please email Phillip Taylor, Safety and Security Specialist, at pjtaylor1@fcps.edu.

Student Parking Information: This year, students will have the opportunity to purchase parking permits to park on the Annandale campus. Information about how to purchase a parking permit for the 2021-22 school year will be shared soon after the school year begins. Stay tuned for more information! In the meantime, students can park in any designated student parking space until permits are issued. If you have any questions, please email Phillip Taylor, Safety and Security Specialist, at pjtaylor1@fcps.edu.

Student Lockers: Students locker will be available by request only, beginning on Monday, September 6. Stay tuned for more information.

Free Breakfast & Lunch for All Annandale Students: The U.S. Department of Agriculture extended schools’ abilities to provide meals, by giving special exemptions last year when schools were shut down due to COVID-19. This exemption has been extended for the 2021-22 school year. For Annandale and FCPS, this means that all students, regardless of their families’ incomes, will receive free breakfast and lunch through June 2022.

Bell Schedule: We will be implementing a new bell schedule for the 2021-2022 school year compared to last year. See below for the detailed schedule.

Important Information

Updated Mask Requirements: This week, FCPS updated mask requirements. FCPS’ universal indoor masking requirement is now extended to everyone inside an FCPS building. Please note: Governor Northam just announced universal masking indoors for all K-12 schools so FCPS is aligned with the state mandate.

Meningococcal Vaccine Requirement for Rising Seniors: Effective July 1, rising seniors are required to have one dose of Meningococcal Vaccine (MenACWY, Menactra, or Menveo). Parents or guardians should ask their private healthcare provider, or the health department, to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations. More information on new immunization requirements is available here. Rising seniors cannot begin school in August without documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine with one dose given at age 16 or older.

Awesome Atoms!

Welcome New Teachers! On Thursday, we welcomed new faculty and staff members to the Atom Nation! Special thanks to our lead mentor team (Catie Bishop, Donna Higgins, L@uren Husman) for organizing the new hire orientation, and all our Annandale VIP’s for their enthusiastic participation. We look forward to supporting, building relationships and collaborating with our new staff members this year.

Thank You to the Class of 1970! Huge shoutout to the Class of 1970 who came together a few weeks ago to celebrate their belated 50th class reunion. It was fun hearing their stories and how appreciative and connected they were to the staff at Annandale. They also donated over $1600 for our staff “Welcome Back Breakfast” on Monday.
