One more week until we excitedly welcome students back for the 2021-2022 school year! We are looking forward to returning to school with 100% of our students in person, five days a week. At the same time, we acknowledge the anxiety some families may be feeling as their children prepare to come to the school building, some for the first time in a year and a half—some for the first time ever. We are committed to your children’s psychological and physical well-being. We are committed to making their time at OES supportive, positive and engaging. And we are eager to partner with you and your family as we affirm each of our students, assess their strengths and needs, and commit to their advancement, success, and joy.
Safety Information
Universal Masking: FCPS requires everyone (students, teachers, staff, and visitors) to wear a mask inside schools and FCPS buildings. Students and staff may remove masks while actively eating, outside for recess, or other outside activities.
Cafeteria: We have redesigned the cafeteria and lunch plans for increased safety while students are unmasked. We have adjusted our schedule so that fewer students will be in the cafeteria at a time to allow distancing between students. Students will wear masks when they are not actively eating.
- Students will be required to wear masks in the cafeteria when not actively eating and drinking.
- Students will need to wear their masks while going through the serving line.
- Students will put their mask back on when they finish their meal.
- Cafeteria spaces will be regularly and thoroughly cleaned with a sanitizing solution.
- It is recommended that students wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer before and after eating.
- FCPS Food Nutrition Services works closely with the Fairfax County Health Department to ensure proper food safety and sanitation.
All students will be offered no cost breakfast and lunch for the entire school year. Menus will be available online beginning August 18. Oakton ES | Fairfax County Public Schools (nutrislice.com)
Handwashing/Sanitizing: We will continue to focus on hand washing/sanitizing throughout the school day. Some examples include: entering and exiting the playground area, before and after eating, and when entering the classroom.
Buses: FCPS school buses will seat more than one student to a seat as needed. This is similar to the bus experience for students last spring and during summer school. Masks are required on the bus.
More details on FCPS layered prevention strategies can be found here.
Student Devices
All students will be assigned a computer in the first weeks of school.
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grades: Students will be assigned a device that stays in school. If devices are needed for schoolwork or projects, or in the event of an extended absence or temporary closure, devices will be sent home with students so they can continue to participate in their classwork.
Grades 3 - 12: Students will be issued an FCPS device for school use. Your child will take their device home with them each day, and should come to school each day with their device fully charged.
Emergency Care Updates Now in ParentVUE
Parents can update their child's emergency care information online using weCare@school (weCare) which is now linked within SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about weCare and ParentVUE here.
Teacher Assignments
An email with teacher assignments will go out to parents on Thursday morning (August 19). Classroom teachers, counselors, and administrators spent considerable time to place students into heterogeneous classes. We reviewed all parent input and did our best to create balanced groups. Please do not request a classroom change.
Superintendent Brabrand will be hosting two virtual community Town Halls to discuss Health and Safety:
Monday, August 16, from 6-7 p.m. (In English) where he will be joined by Dr. Benjamin Schwartz, director of Epidemiology and Population Health at the Fairfax County Health Department. The Town Hall will focus on returning to five full days of in-person instruction for the new school year and layered prevention strategies that will be implemented to help keep students and staff safe. Watch the Town Hall on FCPS’ website or on Cable TV Channel 99 (Verizon Channel 11). Please send your questions in advance to returntoschool@fcps.edu or ask your question live during the event by calling 1-800-231-6359.
Tuesday, August 17, from 6-7 p.m. (In Spanish) The superintendent, joined by two school principals, will answer questions about returning to five full days of in-person learning and measures to help keep everyone safe for a strong return to school. The Town Hall will be streamed live on FCPS Facebook en Español. Please email your questions to returntoSchool@fcps.edu.
