Message from Dr. Floyd
Good afternoon Woodson families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!
I am so excited to welcome teachers back in person on Monday, August 16th! I am looking forward to having their energy back within these concrete walls as they prepare their classrooms and plan their lessons. Similarly, the energy generated with students in our hallways is almost magical and I can’t wait to have your young scholars return for our first day of school on Monday, August 23rd!
Please join us for Cav Kickoff on Thursday, August 19th. For all the details of this community event, visit our website here.
Cav Kickoff is your in-person opportunity to meet your teachers face-to-face! The traditional Back to School Night has changed over the years and the Open House event (from 1-3pm) on Cav Kickoff day will be the in-person opportunity to meet teachers and learn about the curriculum.
If students and/or parents would like some time to walk the building prior to the first day of school, you can visit the building between 8am-3pm on Friday, August 20th to practice walking your schedule in a self-guided tour. We will have maps available at Door 1. Please remember to wear masks when you are in the building.
We return to school this year with a state mandate for everyone to wear a mask at all times inside the school except when actively eating or drinking. Students and teachers will be expected to follow this mandate regardless of vaccinations status. If you have questions, please contact your child's administrator.
Enjoy the final few days of “summer” with your teen! We are looking forward to having them all back in school.
Dr. Floyd Principal

3. Student Rights and Responsibilities
Parents will sign off on the Student Rights and Responsibilities document through their ParentVUE account.
There are other optional forms to complete if applicable - FCPS Privacy and Opt-Out Forms, FLE Opt-Out Forms, Military-Connected Student Form, Free and Reduced Lunch Application, Homeless Student Referral Form, and medical authorization forms. Visit the site for Required and Optional Return to School Forms page to view all the forms.
2. Transportation/Bus Ridership Intent
Because of a serious shortage of school bus drivers, it is important that Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Office of Transportation Services plans the most efficient possible routes for the coming school year. Therefore, please complete this survey to assist us in this planning. Submit a separate survey for each of your children enrolled in FCPS.
This bus rider survey will close on Tuesday, August 17th.
During the school year, changes to your intent can be made with your school's SIS operator if the need for transportation changes.
3. Cav Kickoff - Thursday, August 19th
Get excited, Cavaliers! The new school year is coming, and we invite the community to kick off the year with us on August 19th!
New Student Orientation 12:30p.m.-1:30p.m.: Rising 9th graders and rising 10th graders and anyone new to Woodson HS will have the opportunity to participate in a new student orientation. They will meet key members of the Woodson team, learn important information for the first day of school, and have the opportunity to ask questions. Bus transportation will be provided. For bus departure times and locations, visit the Cav Kickoff site.
Students will be welcomed by members of the Woodson Band, Woodson Cheerleaders, and Woodson Precisionettes at the auditorium entrance (entrance #18). Students may also enter through entrance #1 for a quieter arrival and can find their way to the auditorium by following the signs.
Please note that all students, parents and visitors to Woodson HS are required to wear face masks covering the nose and mouth while inside the building. While FCPS is unable to implement full physical distancing in our schools with the return of 99.5% of our students, we will implement it to the best of our ability when space permits.
Students will begin in the auditorium for a general session. Parents/guardians who attend should proceed to the Main Gym for an information session to learn about Schoology, the PTSO, Athletics and Activities, and hear from other parents about their experiences as new parents at Woodson.
Open House 1:00p.m.-3:00p.m.: All students grades 9-12, and their parents are welcome to tour the building with their schedules, view supply lists for their classes, and meet their teachers. Schedules will be available in SIS starting at 6:00a.m. on Thursday, August 19th.
Tailgate: Clubs/Activities Fair, Games & Activities 3:00p.m.-6:00p.m.: The entire Cavalier Community is invited to enjoy food, games, music, and more to kick-off the 2021-2022 school year (activities outside near entrance #7)!
During this event, you will be able to:
- Visit student clubs, athletic teams, and activities’ sponsors on the basketball courts outside entrance #7
- Purchase food from food trucks
- Learn about Woodson’s PTSO and become a member
- Visit Performing Arts Booster tables
- Purchase Athletic Booster passes and Woodson spirit wear in the main gym
- Get MySchoolBucks (for class fees) and SIS ParentVUE assistance in the main gym
- Seniors can drop off vaccination records (with the Meningococcal vaccine). For more details, see story #6.
- Learn about our Library resources in the main gym
If students are unable to attend Cav Kickoff or the new student orientation, they will be able to access their schedules on SIS (Student Information System) starting at 6:00a.m. on Thursday, August 19th.
Student-led tours this summer welcomed our newest Cavaliers.
4. Student Schedules
Beginning Thursday, August 19th at 6:00am, all students and parents will have access to class schedules in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE. SIS (Student Information System) is the application to see attendance, class performance, transportation, locker information, demographic data.
5. We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources
At Woodson High School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://woodsonhs.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources. Additionally, you can find more information about approved digital resources in FCPS here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-resources.
Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.
We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your teachers and counselors if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.
6. ParentVUE/StudentVUE and Schoology
The Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account Access allows parents and students access to teacher grade books, attendance information, course history and other useful information.

- Schoology has a connected web conferencing tool, Zoom
- Schoology works with Google Drive
- You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to login to Schoology
-
Click here to learn more about Schoology
- Parent accounts will be available in mid-August
- Information about how to login to parent accounts will be shared with you closer to the start of the school year
- Students will have a Schoology account by Wednesday, August 18, 2021

Students use their FCPS student ID and password to login to Schoology. Look for the FCPS logo to make sure you are on the correct login page.
7. New to FCPS Student StudentVUE and Parent ParentVUE SIS Access
Due to security concerns, new students to FCPS can only set up their StudentVUE accounts in person. Once students receive their laptop in their 3rd period class, their teachers will help them set up their account.
Since StudentSIS access for new students will not be available during Cav Kickoff, student schedules will be printed for these students and available outside the auditorium starting at 12pm and on the first day of school in the Student Services office.
SIS ParentVUE: New parents to FCPS should be mailed their activation code by the IT department this week.
8. New Attendance Form
Woodson has a new online Attendance Form!
Submitting a student absence has never been easier thanks to our new online attendance form! With our new website comes a new attendance form that allows parents/guardians to submit absences online.
Submit an absence using our online attendance form.
The previous way of submitting absences via telephone at 703-503-4800 will continue to always be an option.
The other ways to access the attendance form are through the full menu, through the homepage footer (below the attendance phone number), and the about page on the Woodson School website.
For details on Woodson's attendance procedures, please visit the Woodson Attendance site.
9. Kiss and Ride Procedures
The Safety and Security Team would like to highlight the Kiss and Ride procedures, especially for those parents of our students new to Woodson.
- Please make sure that your child is dropped off before 8:00 a.m.
- The morning and afternoon Kiss and Ride locations are in the front of the school, extending from Doors #1 to #3 and in the rear of the school by Doors #8 and #9.
- It is imperative to the flow of traffic that all cars pull forward as far as possible to drop off their student.
- During the morning, students are only allowed to be dropped off at Kiss and Ride locations. Students are not allowed to be dropped off in the rear parking lot or in school parking spaces. The rear parking lot is for staff members and students who have purchased parking passes.
- Safety and Security Team Members are outside to assist each morning and afternoon.
We recommend that new parents become familiar with the locations before the start of school, to see which of the locations is the most convenient for them.
The keys to a successful Kiss and Ride are to obey all posted stop signs and school signs, follow any directions given, and to follow the flow of traffic.
10. Immunization Requirements for Seniors
The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
Effective July 1, 2021 all students entering twelfth grade are required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.
Please provide one of the following documents to Woodson Registrar, Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu as soon as possible:
- An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
- A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
- A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
- A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online
Seniors who do not provide vaccination documentation prior to the start of school will be conditionally enrolled for 90 days.
Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.
Please contact Woodson Registrar, Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu if you have any questions.
