Dear Family Fairfax,

As I enter my 25th year at Fairfax High School I am excited to be serving as the acting principal.  It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to open FHS for the 2021- 2022 school year. I feel confident in this role as I am surrounded by an amazing group of administrators and staff that will keep “the main thing, the main thing”.

I am excited to share that Ms. Janice Monroe will be serving as the interim assistant principal for sub school 3 (Lef-Ras) and the Administrator for the Social Studies and Art department. Janice is a retired Assistant Principal with 30 years of experience with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). She began her career with FCPS at Cedar Lane as a teacher for students with emotional disabilities. Janice spent most of her career with FCPS at West Potomac High School where she served as a special education teacher, SPED department chair and an assistant principal. Janice has a passion for helping people and is actively involved in supporting underserved homeless women and youth in the District of Columbia.

In addition to Ms. Monroe I want to wish a warm welcome to:

  • Candice Tenerelli - Special Education
  • Chrystal Ueltschi - Assessment Coach
  • Daniel Vroman - Social Studies
  • Dara Kien - Custodian
  • Dawn Welters - American Sign Language
  • Gabrielle Hall - Social Studies
  • Grace Yim - English
  • Ho-Jin Yeo - Chemistry
  • James Conklin - HPE
  • Jose Cabrera - World Language: Spanish
  • Julianne Weaver - Public Health Nurse
  • Katherine Doyle - Art
  • Luke Donald - Counselor
  • Mason Phillips - English
  • Mayra King - Attendance Office Assistant
  • Minji Lee - Art
  • Nikki Bender - Counselor
  • Raeshawn Perry - Math
  • Richard Cancel - Custodian
  • Samuel Lee - Biology
  • Sarah Ramezani - Physical Health Assistant
  • Stacy Chong - Fashion Design
  • Steve Lavery - Social Studies
  • Vanessa Corral - Main Office Assistant
  • Vihoede Wilson-Bauhn - World Language: French

Our campus is slowly coming alive once again. Student athletes are on the practice fields and in the field house, counselors are back in their offices, the administrative assistants are busy preparing the sub schools and the custodians are setting up classrooms for our teachers.

We look forward to seeing you at our Open House event on August 19, 2021!

Best regards,

Maureen

12th Grade Immunization Requirement Notice

The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Effective July 1, 2021 all students entering twelfth grade will be required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.

Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.

Please provide one of the following documents to Fairfax High School as soon as possible:

  1. An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine, administered at age 16 or older.
  1. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
  1. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  1. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf

Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.

You may send the documents to Marie Keatinge, SIA, at AMKeatinge@fcps.edu or mail to Fairfax High School, Attn: Marie Keatinge, 3501 Lion Run, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Save the Date:

Pride Assemble (offer to rising 9th and 10th graders)

  • August. 10 - 12th from 9:00AM - Noon.  Sign-up via MySchoolbucks - starting July 5th - August 6th.  Space is limited

Open House - Thursday, August 19th from 12:30 - 6:00 pm

This event eliminates the need for first day packets that would be sent home with required forms and is also an event in which to celebrate the beginning of the new school year. The event is designed to be an opportunity for parents to do some “one-stop shopping,” too.  You will have the opportunity to sign up for ParentVue and Schoology accounts, gain access to the City of Fairfax newsletters, the PTSA, and more. Additionally, students and parents can purchase gym uniforms, parking passes, and FHS apparel. If applicable, you may also drop off medications at the school clinic.  Additionally, you can find a student volunteer to show you to your student’s classroom locations.

Lastly, are you new to Fairfax High School?   All new ninth and tenth grade parents and students are invited to attend one of two special orientation session.   See schedule below for more details!

Fairfax Lions Nice to Know:

Vax Up!

The most effective tool for preventing the spread of COVID-19 is widespread vaccination. FCPS is encouraging, but not requiring, all eligible students, staff, and family members to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Visit one of our school vaccination clinics or make an appointment to be vaccinated.

Vaccination Talking Points

Free Meals

When we return strong this fall, FCPS' Food and Nutrition Services staff will be ready to serve healthy meals to students and staff.  This year, all students will receive free breakfast and lunchFind out more about school meals.

Transportation

Bus stops and route information will be shared with families via ParentVue accounts on August 10.  Please be aware that all students will be required to wear a mask when riding a school bus or using school transportation.

Schoology

FCPS transitioned to Schoology as our learning management system this summer. Students, families, and staff will begin using the system as we Return Strong this fall. Please remind families to request a SIS ParenVUE account if they do not already have one.

Why did FCPS choose Schoology?

  • Ease of use
  • Ability for students to collaborate during and after class time
  • Integration with Google
  • Mobile Accessibility
  • Students can show learning over time

Resources you can share with families to inform and prepare them for the school year:

  • Full-length and snippet videos

Cultural Observances and Religious Holidays

The following message may be sent to families or included in school newsletters:

The Fairfax County School Board voted to approve a calendar for the 2021-22 School Year that is designed to recognize, respect, and honor the plurality of religious and cultural observances in Fairfax County. The calendar ensures students will not have to make choices between honoring their cultural or religious beliefs and missing a test or school activity.

On the 15 observance days listed below, [SCHOOL] will not schedule tests or quizzes. Tests and quizzes will be given before any of these days, so students are not expected to study on the observance day.

In addition, [SCHOOL] will not schedule events including field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS- scheduled athletic events on any of the 15 observance days.

The calendar recognizes 15 diverse religious and cultural observances including:

  • Eid al-Adha
  • Rosh Hashanah
  • Yom Kippur
  • Día de los Muertos
  • Diwali
  • Bodhi Day
  • Three Kings Day/Epiphany
  • Orthodox Christmas
  • Orthodox Epiphany
  • Lunar New Year
  • Ramadan
  • Good Friday
  • Theravada
  • Orthodox Good Friday/Last Night of Passover
  • Eid al-Fitr

The 2021-22 calendar also separates spring break from any religious or cultural observances.
