Principal Message
Dear Washington Mill families,
We are excited that we will be welcoming our students back to school two weeks from today! Upon returning, our students will see many changes occurring that are transforming the look and feel of our school. We will have a new gym, stage, and library in which to learn this year. Students will see a new bus loop, Kiss & Ride, and parking lot. Our new office is scheduled to open sometime in October, and some classes will be moving into our new wing around January! We are all thrilled and grateful to have our students returning in-person where we can teach and learn together!
Our Open House for students will be in-person this year and take place 9:00-10:00 AM on Friday, August 20. There will also be a playdate for kindergarteners on August 20 that overlaps with Open House from 9:30-10:30 AM. We hope as many families as possible can attend Open House so students can see their new classrooms, meet their teachers, and begin to make connections with new classmates. Teachers will be contacting students and families on Wednesday, August 18 to introduce themselves and personally welcome them to their new class for the year. Kindergarten parents that have applied for our immersion program will be notified by our office this week but should still expect to hear from teachers on the 18th as well.
Our bell schedule this year will return to 8:35 AM- 3:20 PM. The first bell rings at 8:20 AM allowing students to go to class, but we ask that you do not drop students off unattended before 8:20 AM because our staff will not be at their duty stations until that time. Dismissal begins at 3:20 PM and usually runs until 3:35 PM. Please, however, be patient the first week back. These times will likely be off the first several days until transportation issues are settled and routines and procedures are practiced.
I mentioned above that our Kiss & Ride is new. If you are a Kiss & Ride family you won’t see much change to the place and pattern of our process, but you will see that the bus entry and Kiss & Ride entry have now been separated. We will be sending a map in our school news this week that offers an aerial view but know we will also have staff directing and signs as well to help when you drop off the first day. Please also be on the lookout for a Kiss & Ride sign-up that will be coming so we can assign numbers and window tags to families.
As we return students this schoolyear, FCPS will continue to implement important mitigating strategies to keep students safe from COVID. They are promoting vaccination, ensuring proper ventilation, frequent handwashing, staying home when sick, increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, and quarantine procedures when necessary. Because FCPS will be serving over 99% of students in person, the recommended degree of physical distancing will not be feasible in most schools. Using existing resources, schools will implement as much distance as possible. Use of universal masking is being implemented to mitigate this factor.
Finally, we held a virtual Principal’s Coffee last week where topics included our new assistant principal, a new mascot for our new school when renovation is completed, pictures and updates about renovation, and Q & A from parents. A link to the recording has been posted to our school website if you missed it and would like to hear the updates.
Thank you for all your help and support in getting our students ready for the new schoolyear. I hope each of you enjoys these last few weeks of summer and know we are excited and eager to reconnect with you and get our students back to school this year.

Estamos muy contentos de dar la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes de vuelta a la escuela dentro de dos semanas. Al regresar, nuestros estudiantes verán muchos cambios que están transformando el aspecto y la sensación de nuestra escuela. Tendremos un nuevo gimnasio, escenario y biblioteca en el cual aprender este año. Los estudiantes verán un nuevo círculo de autobuses, Kiss & Ride, y el estacionamiento. Nuestra nueva oficina está planeada para abrirse en el mes de octubre, y algunas clases se mudarán a nuestra nueva ala en enero. ¡Todos estamos emocionados y agradecidos de tener a nuestros estudiantes regresando en persona donde podemos enseñar y aprender juntos!
Nuestra Casa Abierta para los estudiantes será en persona este año y se llevará a cabo 9:00-10:00 AM el viernes, 20 de agosto. También habrá una cita de juego para los estudiantes de kindergarten el 20 de agosto que se cruza con la Casa Abierta de 9:30-10:30 AM. Esperamos que tantas familias como sea posible puedan asistir a la Casa Abierta para que los estudiantes puedan ver sus nuevos salones, conocer a sus maestros y comenzar a hacer conexiones con sus nuevos compañeros de clase. Los maestros se pondrán en contacto con los estudiantes y las familias el miércoles 18 de agosto para introducirse y darles personalmente la bienvenida a su nueva clase para el año. Los padres de Kindergarten que han solicitado nuestro programa de inmersión serán notificados por nuestra oficina esta semana, pero deben esperar escuchar a los maestros el 18 también.
Nuestro horario de timbre este año volverá a ser de 8:35 AM- 3:20 PM. El primer timbre sonará a las 8:20 AM permitiendo a los estudiantes ir a clase, pero les pedimos que no dejen a los estudiantes desatendidos antes de las 8:20 AM porque nuestro personal no estará en sus estaciones de trabajo hasta ese momento. La salida comienza a las 3:20 PM y generalmente se extiende hasta las 3:35 PM. Sin embargo, por favor, sea paciente las primeras semanas de regreso. Es probable que estos horarios no se cumplan los primeros días hasta que se resuelvan los problemas de transporte y se practiquen las rutinas y los procedimientos.
He mencionado anteriormente que nuestro Kiss & Ride es nuevo. Si usted es una familia de Kiss & Ride no verá mucho cambio en el lugar y el patrón de nuestro proceso, pero verá que la entrada del autobús y la entrada de Kiss & Ride ahora se han separado. Estaremos enviando un mapa en nuestras noticias de la escuela esta semana que ofrece una vista aérea, pero sepa que también tendremos personal dirigiendo y señales también para ayudar cuando usted deje su estudiante el primer día. Mientras regresamos a los estudiantes este año escolar, FCPS continuará implementando importantes estrategias de mitigación para mantener a los estudiantes a salvo de COVID. Están promoviendo la vacunación, asegurando la ventilación apropiada, el lavado de manos frecuente, permaneciendo en casa cuando estén enfermos, aumentando los procedimientos de limpieza y desinfección, y los procedimientos de cuarentena cuando sea necesario. Debido a que el FCPS atenderá a más del 99% de los estudiantes en persona, el grado recomendado de distanciamiento físico no será factible en la mayoría de las escuelas. Utilizando los recursos existentes, las escuelas implementarán la mayor distancia posible. Se está implementando el uso de enmascaramiento universal para mitigar este factor.
Por último, la semana pasada celebramos un Café de Directores virtual en el que se trataron temas como nuestra nueva subdirectora, una nueva mascota para nuestra nueva escuela cuando la renovación esté terminada, fotos y actualizaciones sobre la renovación, y preguntas y respuestas de los padres. Meet your teacher and get connected! Teachers will meet students and families, build community, and answer basic questions to help students and families. The focus of this event is connecting with our students.

To welcome the newest members of our WMES family, we will be hosting a Kindergarten play date on the WMES playground directly following Open House. Please join us and allow your children to begin building new friendships with their classmates. Popsicles will be provided for Kindergarten students!
