A Note from Administration
Dear KG Families,
We hope that all are having a wonderful summer! Please do continue reading and practicing math! If you need links to the summer packets, please email me or any of the assistant principals (emails below in the signature) and we will remit the links.
Note that our office is open daily from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Our registrar, Tracy Dean, is available to respond to registration requests or concerns.
A few highlights for you as you enjoy the summer:
- Registration is open. Here is the link to the forms required from FCPS. Please do have any new neighbors contact the office with questions or send them our way.
- Kinder playdates are drop-ins and offer the opportunity to meet new families and make new friends. The school is not open (no bathrooms).
- Laptop Return: Note that laptops from the prior year should be turned in now. We will reimage and support with new software updates. You may drop off at any time there is access to the office. Bring the wrapped power cord with you.
- Open House August 19th - Families should come in 30 minute increments based on last name. Please note that we will have parking challenges. Plan on parking in the neighborhood and walking to the school. Please do not block our neighbors' driveways. There will be a school bus available for our new students to explore. Students/families in K- 2 will enter through the cafeteria door and students in 3 - 6 will enter through the gym door. If you have multiple students, you may choose the door to enter. We will have icees on the playground. This is a brief opportunity to drop off forms and meet your child(ren)s teacher. More information to follow, here is the alpha split by last name:

Back to School Night: Dates will be forthcoming. We are planning on a virtual event that you may join from work or home. It will be recorded as well. You will also be contacted by your child's teacher to set up a virtual or face to face meeting during the month of September.
We will continue to remit timely announcements. As we obtain additional information regarding the five day return to school, we will hold coffees to inform our community.

Sign Up for Band and Strings! - Electives for Students in Grades 4 - 6
We look forward to a vibrant and exciting year in band and strings similar to prior years!! We will recruit students in the fall for band and strings. However, if you know your child's choice and decision, please do complete the google form now. Most students play an instrument in grades 4 - 6.
Strings is offered to students in grades 4 - 6. As 4th grade is the initial entry, we typically have over 95% participation. Ms. Anita Su,asu@fcps.edu, will continue to be our amazing strings instructor (so lucky to have her with us!!) and will be joined by Ms. Ahnika Emery, aremery@fcps.edu, who is also an experienced strings instructor. They are excited for the start of the new year! Here is the link to sign up for strings!
Band is offered to students in grades five and six. Band instruction begins in 5th grade. Students who participated in strings in the fourth grade either stay with the strings instruction or explore a new instrument in band. We have Mr. Brad Zimmerman, an amazing experienced FCPS band instructor, bszimmerman@fcps.edu, joining KG this year and Mr. Ted Frederick, who is equally amazing, returning to KG, thfrederick@fcps.edu. It promises to be a wonderful year! Here is the link to sign up now for band for the next school year.
We will also permit students to sign up in the first two weeks of school in August. You are welcome to reach out to the instructors or the school admin. team with questions.
Patrol Sign Up for 2021-22
Interested in supporting arrival and dismissal as a fifth or sixth grader? Mr. Avery and Mr. Blake will support the patrols with some training and will be able to answer questions prior to the start of school. If your child is in fifth or sixth grade, please sign up here. If they have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tia Hawkins, tnhawkins@fcps.edu, or Mr. Avery, savery@fcps.edu, in the interim in the interim. We look forward to our student support at arrival and dismissal. Truthfully, our students take on true leadership roles in supporting other students and keeping everyone safe!
KG Tour Guides Needed! August 11th 4:45 - 5:45 p.m.
Let us know if your rising sixth grader would like to support our school and offer group tours to new families. The students can partner/team together and offer a simple walk through of the building and share their insight regarding our wonderful school and show their #kgpride. Please complete this form to indicate your rising sixth grader's interest!

Summer Reading through Fairfax County Public Library!

Are you ready for a summer challenge? The Fairfax County Public Library is hosting the Tails & Tales Reading Challenge from June 11 to August 13. Just go to Fairfax County Public Library Youth Summer Reading Adventure, sign up online, and earn badges. You may even win a prize!
You'll have several chances to earn prizes when you read and complete activities. Here are the prize milestones for Youth Summer Reading Adventure 2021:
- Sign up for the program to unlock a chance to win a $25 e-gift card to Scrawl Books
- Read 500 minutes to unlock a chance to win a $50 Chipotle gift card
- Complete the program by reading 1,000 minutes OR reading 500 minutes and completing 5 activity badges to unlock a chance to win a $150 Amazon e-gift card

Summer Math Challenge
Participate in a free six-week online math skills maintenance program designed for students who have just completed grades 1-8.
The 2021 Challenge will support student learning at home and offers daily emails with fun activities and links to educational resources at each student’s ability level. Parents can monitor their child's progress and generate weekly badges and a certificate to celebrate accomplishments.
