Class of 2025 Information Update - 7/22/21

Class of 2025 Information Update - 7/22/21

Dear TJHSST Class of 2025 Families,

I hope all is well and you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer. I wanted to provide a few updates on some activities that students and their families can participate in heading into the school year. First will be an update on our mathematics diagnostic and support program using ALEKS artificial intelligence software. I also have a message from the TJPTSA about regional welcome parties. Finally, TJ's Student Government Association (SGA) had a couple of messages they wanted to pass along.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me at mbroth@fcps.edu if you have any questions. I will be able to give you your answer or direct you to the proper staff member that will be able to help you.

Sincerely,

Mike Roth

TJHSST Communications Coordinator

Spots Still Available for ALEKS

We want to continue to encourage ALL entering freshmen to consider participating in ALEKS, a math diagnostic and skill-building opportunity. Students who have only completed Algebra I and are scheduled to take Geometry at TJ this year are especially invited to take this opportunity which is free, online, and provides a flexible schedule.

While we are aware there were some early hiccups with registration for some families, our staff has worked through all the issues. For any help with registration please contact math and computer science division leader Dr. Shane Torbert at SMTorbert@fcps.edu.

ALEKS starts with a diagnostic to assess students' current math skill level. It then creates a dynamic, individualized sequence of interventions for each student as they navigate through algebra, geometry and pre-calculus.

Participating in ALEKS is optional, but we are encouraging all incoming freshmen to enroll this summer. There are 3 modules. As you complete one you advance to the next. All students must start with module one but do not have to commit to all 3 modules. Progress may vary per student, depending on previous math experience.

Modules are one-week long and are ongoing now until Aug 13. The majority of the modules will be asynchronous except for the first day. Office hours will be available for up to 2 hours each day.  Registration details can be found here. This enrichment opportunity is free of charge and not for credit.

In preparation for your summer enrichment opportunities, we wanted to ensure you have access to the technology resources necessary to be successful.

If you need access to a laptop for summer learning enrichment opportunities, please contact our Tech Team at at TJHSSTTechTeam@fcps.edu. Please remember, access to a web browser or a personal device will work for many enrichment offerings. You are welcome to use your personal device for any summer program.

Scavenger Hunt Reminder

Reminder that families have the opportunity to visit the school with the TJ Scavenger Hunt on either Tuesday, July 27 or Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Please RSVP for a time slot that best fits your schedule here; there are four 90-minute sessions available on between 11:00 am and 6:30 pm. The deadline to RSVP for July 27th is July 26th at 8:00am and the deadline to RSVP for August 3rd is August 2nd at 8:00am.  In order to provide this opportunity to as many students as possible, we ask that each family pick only one slot to participate in the scavenger hunt.

Attend a Regional Welcome Party!

The TJPTSA is busy planning regional welcome parties for the Class of 2025!

These parties will help you connect with other TJ rising 9th graders and their families who live in your area. There will also be current TJ students and parents at the parties to help answer questions.

Please fill out the form below to let us know you are interested in finding out more about the regional welcome party in your area. Parties will take place the first few weeks of August and you will receive more information about dates and locations soon! SGA Looking for FroshComm Volunteers

The following message is from the TJ Student Government Association (SGA):

Hey Class of 2025!

  • Do you want to connect with student leaders from all of TJ?
  • Do you want to gain valuable expertise useful for future opportunities in student government?
  • Do you want to have an awesome TJ experience before school even starts?

If any of these questions piqued your interest, you should apply to the 2025 Freshman Committee (FroshComm)! FroshComm is a group of eight freshmen that serves as the official branch of student government overseeing the entire class of 2025 until class elections take place in November. This is an amazing opportunity to develop and demonstrate your leadership skills to your class. In FroshComm, you'll be offered a chance like no other to connect with your classmates and upperclassmen.

As a member of FroshComm, you will:

  • Facilitate participation in class Homecoming events.
  • Select the freshman Homecoming theme.
  • Create committees and putting together a float, banner, 8 minute music/dance performance, canned food sculpture, class song, spirit video, and other Homecoming creations for your class.
  • Develop insight into how student government at TJ works and operates.

Freshmen Can Find their "BigSibs"

The following message is from the TJ Student Government Association (SGA) and the BigSibs program:

Dear Rising Freshmen and Parents,

The Big Sibs Coordinators would like to extend a warm TJ welcome to you all.  For those who do not know, the Big Sibs program at Jefferson is designed to ease the transition for freshmen by providing every incoming freshman with a “Big Sib” who is a current TJ student. The Big Sib will also be a valuable resource for asking questions and getting more information about academics, sports, and activities at TJ. Additionally, the Big Sib has the responsibility of aiding and maintaining contact with the “Little Sib” throughout the whole year whether it is through emails, phone calls, or at Big Sibs-sponsored events.

In order to find the best Big Sib match for the freshmen, we ask the freshmen to take a few minutes to register for the program and fill out a short form online. The form online contains questions about preferences such as preferred gender of Big Sib and academic and extracurricular interests. The matches are made based on compatibility gathered from the responses to this online form. Please fill out the form by July 30th, 2021, however, applications will be accepted until the start of the school year.

Before the school year, we invite the incoming freshmen to join their BigSibs after Orientation Day and get to know each other. There will be pizza, drinks, and tours with other BigSibs and students. Throughout the school year, there will also be quarterly events which will include donuts, cookies, and an ice cream social! Each year, we get over 300 applications before our event and even more students choose to sign up on the day of.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to email tjbigsibs@gmail.com

Thank you,

TJ BigSibs Senior Coordinators
