Dear Westgate Families,
I hope this finds you having a wonderful summer break. It is hard to believe that in a little over a month, we will welcoming our wonderful students & teachers back to Westgate for the 2021-22 school year. We could not be more excited to begin the year by providing FIVE days a week of in-person instruction. It has certainly been a journey over the past 18 months, but we are extremely hopeful for all the positive things the fall has in store for our students, staff, and families.
If you are new to Westgate, or have a rising kindergarten student, we welcome you to an in-person tour on either August 3rd or 5th, at 9:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. This gives students an opportunity to tour our building and explore some of our main learning spaces (classrooms, gym, cafeteria, etc.). In addition, it is great opportunity to connect with new Westgate students and families, so we hope to see many of you there!
As a reminder, Westgate will hold it's annual Open House on Friday, August 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Details are listed below but this is an in-person event where students will get to meet their teacher, explore their classroom, and meet or reconnect with friends. Open House will help students feel more comfortable in their new environment prior to the first day of school on August 23rd.

Open House - Friday, August 20 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Come meet your teacher and new classmates on Friday, August 20th at our Westgate Open House from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. This is an opportunity for students connect with new and old friends, and most importantly, meet their classroom teacher! We also highly encourage that students bring and drop off their school supplies on this day. School supply lists can be found here. Please note that if you bought school supplies via the PTA, they will be automatically delivered to your child's classroom. You will receive your child's classroom teacher assignment by mail prior to Open House. If you do not receive that information prior August 20th, please call our main office at 703-610-5700.

Last Kindergarten Play Date - Sunday, August 1 @ Westgate
Make new friends and meet new families! Get excited for the upcoming school year and join fellow rising kindergarteners at our very own Westgate Elementary playground on Sunday, August 1st, from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. Please note this is a location change from Olney Park. We look forward to seeing many of our kindergarten students on August 1st!

Kindergarten Assessments
We conduct quick assessments on our rising Kindergarten students before the school year begins. Assessments will be held at Westgate August 3 - 5 and you may sign up here. If you are unable to make an assessment time during those days, your child's teacher will just assess them when we return to school later in August. As a reminder, these assessments are only used to get an idea of where your child is academically, and not for any placement purposes. It is also a great opportunity for your child to get to meet some of our staff members prior to the first day of school.

New Student and Kindergarten Registration Information

Please spread the word that registration is underway as we are excited to meet our newest Wolves. Registration information for kindergarten and new students can be found on our website here. Reminder - Westgate Yearbooks
Even through this unique school year, we are excited to again be offering a Westgate Yearbook! This year’s yearbook is $15 and will be available for purchase next school year if you didn’t get your order in this school year.
This year's yearbook will be more unique than ever because we will be able to add promotion, and special end of year event photos to it.
In addition, Westgate will be doing a special 6th grade section of the yearbook again this year. It will include baby and family photos. If you have a 6th grade student and wish to include your child’s photos, please email them to westgateyearbook@fcps.edu or send them to school in an envelope with your child’s name and teacher. They will be scanned and returned.
Due to current pandemic circumstances, yearbooks were not finished prior to the end of the school year. However, you will still be able to purchase them in advance and can pick them up when they are delivered this summer. We are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for students again this school year.

Immunization Requirement Updates
Effective July 1, 2021, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) will require new school entry immunizations. All grade levels will be affected by these additional immunizations.
Required for School Entry:

A minimum of two doses of Hepatitis (A) vaccine are required: For SY 2021/2022, Kindergarten students must have two doses of Hepatitis A.
- A minimum of two doses of Meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine are required: For SY 2021/2022, 7th grade students must have one dose and 12th grade students must have one dose.

A minimum of one dose of Rotavirus (RV) vaccine is required: One dose is required for students less than eight months of age.
