2. Building Tours for Students July 20th-22nd

Do you have a student new to Woodson? Or was your student virtual during the 2020-2021 school year? We are excited to welcome all 9th, 10th and new-to-Woodson students into our school building to participate in a small group, student-led building tour.

Tours will be led by rising junior and senior Woodson students. During the tours, students will walk through the building, learn about the school day, and get helpful tips to ease the transition to high school and the building.

Also throughout the tours, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear experiences from current upper class students.

Tour times will be from 10-11am, 11-12pm, and 12-1pm each of the following days:
Tuesday, July 20th
Wednesday, July 21st
Thursday, July 22nd.

Don’t worry if you’re out of town or can’t make the tour dates next week, additional dates and times will be added soon.

Please sign up for the time slot that works for you!   Parents can drop students off at Door 1

Sports

3. Fall Activities and Sports Information

Fall sports tryouts will take place on Thursday, July 29th for Golf, and Monday, August 2nd for all other Fall sports.

Students interested in Fall sports can visit the Woodson Athletics website to find out more information or contact the Activities Office at 703-503-4681.

The VHSL has a New Physical Form. This new form is the ONLY version that can be accepted from now on. Please make note of the "Revised January 2021" written in the top right corner of the new form. If you have a form that states "Revised February 2017", that is the old form, so please do not have your doctor fill that version out. We cannot accept it.

The VHSL Physical Form must be completed by a parent/guardian and doctor. In order for the physical to be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year, it cannot be filled out and dated by a doctor until May 1, 2021 or after.

Once completed, please drop it off to Woodson's Activities Office, Woodson's Main Office or scan it to the Athletic Trainer Chris Hogge at chogge@fcps.edu. This must be turned in prior to participating in athletics.

Sports Registration

If your student tried out for a sports team during the 2020-21 school year, then you will be able to login as a returning user (given that you registered your student!). All students must be registered for their selected sports prior to attending tryouts and out of season workouts.

If your student did not tryout for a sports team this school year, or you have a rising freshman, then you will need to create an account and register. Helpful tips can be found hereRegister Here!

4. Freshman Football

I want to take this opportunity to WELCOME YOU to Woodson High School!  You are about to embark on a great four years!  Some say that your high school years are the best years of your life and here you are, getting ready to begin!

I don’t know if you have any experience playing football but we would love to have you come on out and give it a try!  I am sending a letter to every freshman family to invite all of you to play football next year for the Woodson Cavaliers.  Our football program will only get stronger and stronger with each one of you that decide to play.  Every freshman class is different!  What will your freshman class be like?

The Woodson Freshman team last year was very successful and set records passing the ball and lighting up the scoreboard. This year we want you to be a part of this amazing opportunity. Our football program prides itself on being a family.  In fact, talking to the players in the offseason, we found that their favorite part of the season was the “family atmosphere.”  So if you are up for a rewarding challenge, character building, hard work, and most importantly - if you are up for making friends and having fun with a great group, you will make a great football player!  Whether you have experience playing in youth football or no experience at all, we want you to play for Woodson!

In-season football practices will start the Monday August 2nd and go 6 days a week until the end of the season in late October/early November.  Practices are every day after school and games are typically played on Thursdays at 5:30 pm.  We can be flexible working with our athletes who play other sports. Just be communicative with us about any conflicts and we can try and help. You will need your VHSL sports physical and Woodson sports registration (found here: https://www.wtwoodsonsports.com/page/5448 ) filled out before being allowed to come out (schedule those physicals now! Minute clinic and Urgent Cares do them as well).

All who follow team rules and attend practices will make the team.  No previous football experience is required.  Every effort is made to play all players in each game.  Helmets and shoulder pads are provided by Woodson.  Players must provide their own footwear (cleats), socks and girdle.

Please feel free to share this information with any interested parties.  Contact me or the Freshman head coach (Coach Jeff McCormack) at any time with questions (contact info for all coaches is below). Thanks for your interest! Look forward to seeing you on the gridiron in the Fall!

Thanks so much!

We continue to work to improve the diversity of the books for our English classes, but in order to do so, we need your help. In order to add new books to the curriculum, we need parents to review the book content.  We are hoping that some of you may have already read the books in the list below and would be able to provide input.

They Called Us Enemy by George Takei

Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

If you have read any of these books, please contact Dr. Paula DiSalvo, assistant principal at pdisalvo@fcps.edu by Friday August 14, 2021 or please complete this Google Form to give your feedback.

If you have not read the book, we would love you to read the book and help our instructional teams.  And if you need the book, we can get the book to you!

Thank you so much!

Dr. DiSalvo
