Dear TJHSST Class of 2025 Families and Students:
Congratulations on being admitted to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology! Our administration and faculty representatives enjoyed connecting with many families on June 30 via our Information Night and we hope you found the experience rewarding and exciting. We also have a few more members being admitted to the Class of 2024, affectionately known as "froshmores," and want to make sure you get a special shout out, too.
You are already special to us in so many ways. You are the largest freshman class to enter TJ. You represent every FCPS middle school for the first time in at least 10 years. You are high performers whose cumulative GPA is higher this year than in the past five years. Most of all, you belong at TJ! You are more to us than a GPA, and we will be your GPS. We will help you navigate all paths that lead to success over the next four years and beyond.
During the next few weeks, you will receive communications from various administrative staff, as well as our TJ Communication Support Specialist Mike Roth, with information that you will find helpful as you transition to TJ. Our goal is to streamline our messages so as not to flood your inbox. We will only include information that we consider essential during this time period.
This newsletter provides some of the initial information that is time sensitive including TJ registration, course enrollment, transportation, and summer school. Please read the entire contents and take action as soon as possible on information we need to properly enroll and register you in all things TJ.
Stay tuned for more news on touring the school, freshman class orientation, and Back to School Nights. I look forward to seeing all of you in person soon!
We have populated what is called a News You Choose group with the accepted applicant and parent emails that were provided by the TJ Admissions Office to help facilitate some early communication about a few important topics.
This News You Choose group will remain restricted until we have had the opportunity to replace the emails with those enrolling parent emails that will eventually be entered into our Student Information System (SIS). The News You Choose group will later be opened up for subscriptions to allow families to enter multiple email addresses. In the meantime you can subscribe to other TJHSST News You Choose groups by going to the Subscriber Preferences Page.
Thank you in advance for your patience as we work as quickly as possible to get all students registered and please be sure to keep an eye out for new messages at this email address in the meantime.
How you register with TJHSST is dependent on whether your child currently attends a FCPS school or not.
Families currently enrolled in FCPS:
For now, there is nothing that families currently enrolled with FCPS need to do to formally register with TJHSST. We are handling this part of the process for you.
Skip the next section below meant for Non-FCPS Families and continue reading about course registration, bus depot registration, and Summer School recommendations.
The following information is ONLY for families coming to TJHSST from outside Fairfax County Public Schools. FCPS families can skip to the next session.
Families not yet enrolled in FCPS:
In the interest of time and for your immediate convenience, we are asking you to temporarily register your child through an online process.
Please complete the form below as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday, July 14. After receipt of this form from all non-FCPS families, we will communicate your new FCPS Student ID# directly via email.
We are conducting a formal registration July 13-19. It will require families to bring specific documentation directly to TJ. Here are the documents we require you to bring:
Arlington, Loudon, Prince William, and Falls Church Families - Original and copy of enrolling parent photo ID, original and copy of student birth certificate, and copy of immunization records.
Private and Home School Families - Original and copy of enrolling parent photo ID, original and copy of student birth certificate, home deed or lease, copy of immunization records and a utility bill.
Here are the days you should come to TJ to bring the necessary documentation. The date is based on your child's last name. You are welcome to come during either the morning or afternoon session.
Tuesday, July 13 - Last names A-E, morning session 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; afternoon session 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, July 14 - Last names F-K, morning session 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; afternoon session 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 15 - Last names L-R, morning session 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; afternoon session 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Friday, July 16 - Last names S-Z, morning session 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; afternoon session 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
Monday, July 19 - Makeups, morning session 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
A couple more notes:
- This is a registration event for the receipt of forms only. Tours of the building will occur at a later date.
- Parents should come in the Dome Entrance and take a seat in the Dome area . Note there will be a sign where the line starts. We will come out and bring in small groups of parents in at a time to register.
Thank you for your assistance in making our registration event a success.
We hope that you had an opportunity on June 30 Information Night to learn about some of the curricular options available to 9th graders. You may also have perused the Class of 2025 Welcome Page. If you need some additional information about what courses to consider we would encourage you to visit some of the information pages that we’ve set up to share some general guidelines.
If you have not yet completed the Class of 2025 Course Selection form, please do so as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday, July 14.
After we’ve had an opportunity to enter the preliminary course selections into the Student Information System (SIS), you will receive an email communication verifying the courses in which your child has been registered. Please understand that this will take time as we must manually enter the course selections for each student. For those families new to FCPS, this verification email will also contain your student’s FCPS ID# which replaces the applicant ID. Your student will use this FCPS ID# throughout their time at TJHSST.
As a magnet school serving Northern Virginia, TJ uses a geographic depot model as opposed to individual neighborhood service. Families residing in Fairfax County may register here for transportation depots.
Even if your child does not plan to take a school bus next year, please fill out the form above and confirm no transportation is needed. Note: families at TJHSST who do not reside within Fairfax County do not need to fill out this form. See the section below.
Questions regarding FCPS transportation may be directed to Milagro Perez-Tobar (MDPerezTobar@fcps.edu). We are committed to ensuring reasonable access to transportation for all families.
Families residing outside Fairfax County will be communicated with directly by their sending jurisdictions. Do not contact FCPS transportation offices. Here is contact information for each non-FCPS sending jurisdiction.
This summer we are offering a math enrichment opportunity with the use of ALEKS software. We encourage ALL entering freshmen to consider participating in this diagnostic and skill-building opportunity.
ALEKS starts with a diagnostic to assess students' current math skill level. It then creates a dynamic, individualized sequence of interventions for each student as they navigate through algebra, geometry and pre-calculus.
Participating in ALEKS is optional, but we are encouraging all incoming freshmen to enroll this summer. There are 3 modules. As you complete one you advance to the next. All students must start with module one but do not have to commit to all 3 modules. Progress may vary per student, depending on previous math experience.
Modules are one-week long and will be offered from July 13-Aug 13. The majority of the modules will be asynchronous except for the first day. Office hours will be available for up to 2 hours each day. Registration details can be found here. This enrichment opportunity is free of charge and not for credit.
Students are also welcome to register for any remaining Humanities enrichment modules that run between July 12-30. Registration details can be found here.
In preparation for your summer enrichment opportunities, we wanted to ensure you have access to the technology resources necessary to be successful.
*If you are enrolled in Research Statistics I (RS1), you are able to pick up a laptop at TJ on Monday, July 12th from 10 am – 12 pm at Door 7 in the Kiss & Ride lane. During this pickup we will ensure that you have access to the software required for this class. Please note this process can take up to 15 minutes to complete. A member of the Tech Team will walk you through this process.
If you are not enrolled in RS1 and need access to a laptop for summer learning enrichment opportunities, please follow this link to sign up for a date and time so we can prepare ahead of your assigned slot. Please remember, access to a web browser or a personal device will work for many enrichment offerings. You are welcome to use your personal device for any summer program. If you are not enrolled in any summer programs, FCPSOn laptops will be provided to all freshmen the first week school. If you have any other/specific questions or require other technology such as a MiFi (Mobile Internet Access), please reach out to the Tech Team at TJHSSTTechTeam@fcps.edu.
For further information on ALEKS and its requirements, please refer to the picture below. If you your device meets these requirements you are not required to stop by and pick up a device.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Dr. Shane Torbert, Math/CS Division Manager (SMTorbert@fcps.edu) or Volita Russell, Summer School Principal (vsrussell@fcps.edu).
