Dear Family Fairfax,
Happy Friday! Only one more week of school for our 9-11th grade students, and we said farewell to our seniors on Tuesday. Though it got a little warm, I don’t think we could have had better weather. OK, seriously :), we could not have had better weather if we had ordered it ourselves.
Saying goodbye to Fairfax’s Class of 2021, though very difficult, felt a little like a renaissance of those moments we love and have missed about high school and our community. I felt lucky to participate, and even luckier to look out at the sea of smiling and nervous faces. There is this moment when you are handing a diploma (cover!) to a graduate, when you get to look straight into their eyes to say congratulations--that moment of uncertainty turns instantly into a smiling moment of confidence. It is absolutely beautiful to witness.
This morning our community celebrated the renaming of our middle school, now Katherine Johnson Middle School. It was amazing to see her family members and so many of our City of Fairfax and Fairfax County leadership in the audience. And in keeping the main thing, the main thing--we loved hearing bits of essays written by future Johnson Eagles and a poem by a current Johnson Eagle---the future of Fairfax High School is BRIGHT! Though I will be watching our students continue towards excellence from a distance, I will always be proud of the little time I got to spend here with them--both soaring and roaring.
A shout out to Payton Morrison who was asked by FCPS and the City of Fairfax to participate in a live video interview on Channel 5 Fox Good Day DC. She was interviewed with Coach Barborek about the state championship gymnastics team. Here is the link to watch their interview.
As we begin District play, please see the calendar in this message---There are many activities over the next week, and much to celebrate!
Finally, DRUM ROLL PLEASE: Attached is the slide deck for the FHS Department Awards digital presentation. In-person students were presented their certificates by their teachers, and virtual students will receive their certificates in the mail next week: 2020-2021 Department Awards
Wishing you a restful weekend,
Erin
Student Services Important Information
Please carefully review your student’s selected courses for the 2021-2022 school year on ParentVUE.
A typical course load will consist of seven classes, which includes: English, Social Studies, Science, Math, World Language (recommended, but not required), Health and PE (required for 10th graders, not 11th and 12th), and Electives. Students receiving special education services, English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or students attending FCPS Academy programs may have a slightly different schedule based on individual academic needs.
Due to budget constraints and its effect on staffing, all requests for changes to the 2021-2022 course requests must be made no later than Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Changes will be made only if you contact the counselor and if space permits.
Additionally, please contact your child’s Fairfax High School counselor if any of the following situations apply:
- Too many or too few classes
- Incorrect placement by grade (i.e. placed in English 11 instead of English 12)
- Absence of a required course or pre-requisite not met
- Inaccurate placement by course level (i.e. regular or honors or AP)
Graduation requirements and School Counselor contact information can be found on the FHS website: https://fairfaxhs.fcps.edu/student-services
