Cardinal’s Message

Cardinal’s Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

2020-2021, has been the year that was... unprecedented... unusual... trying... It was the year of perseverence.  The year of adaptability.  And it was the year we came together as a community -teachers, staff, parents, students- and pulled each other through an extended crisis.

The novelist, James Lane Allen, said, “Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.”  Take a look at our school community.  Throughout the months, we ensured everyone was fed and basic needs were met, the community came out to get neighbors connected for class, volunteers and staff distributed books to all students.  Throughout unprecedented adversity, our families, staff, friends, and students stood tall, and the collective character that was revealed in our community cannot be surpassed.

In reality, it feels like we’re coming to the end of a school-year that started in March of last year. Back then, when we went virtual, I called it “School 2.0.”

Now, it’s time to look ahead. Let’s not go back to School 1.0. Let’s come out of this even better than when we went in.  We look forward to furthering our work with Advanced Academic strategies like Concept-Based Instruction we began two years ago with a school-wide Play Space PBL.  We are excited to continue working with Positivity Project, and also to investigate ways to further deepen our work with Responsive Classroom and other cutting edge research.  Our primary grades will move forward with implementing word study and systemic phonetic instruction within our comprehensive literacy program - an initiative we began years ago and with which we keep moving forward.

Our mathematics instruction will incorporate even more higher order critical thinking, while our learning experiences overall will strive to be real-world and highly relevant to all students.

The beautiful diversity of Cunningham Park - cultural, economic, academic, and otherwise - will continue to be honored and celebrated.  And our students will receive a world-class global education that comes naturally in a setting such as ours.

To our sixth graders moving on, we wish you the best. Remember, once you have been a Cardinal, you are always a Cardinal in our hearts. Take flight and soar, we’ll be cheering for you!

And to everyone, with this as our last Cardinal’s Message for the year, we wish you a wonderful summer full of carefree playing, reading, and enjoyment.

Next year, we’re back - five days a week.  We have survived a pandemic. Together, we can do anything!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal
