FCPS is awarded Safe Routes to School grant for the 8th year

FCPS Awarded Safe Routes to School Grant

Grant targets 5 Title I Elementary Schools and 2 Middle Schools

Grant work begins in August

For the 8th year in a row, FCPS will receive Safe Routes to School funding.  This next school year's grant will continue to work with all elementary and middle schools to promote walking and biking safely to school as well as target five elementary schools and 2 middle schools.  Target schools were chosen based on the high percentage of students that are designated as walkers and the willingness of the administration to promote active transportation.  Efforts will be made to reduce the number of students relying on Kiss and Ride and increase the number of students walking or biking to school regularly.

Dogwood Elementary, Crestwood Elementary, Annandale Terrace Elementary, Braddock Elementary and Mount Eagle are the selected elementary schools.  Rocky Run Middle School and Stone Middle School are the selected middle schools.

Bike to School Day a Success

Forty-three schools/families signed up and participated in Bike to School Day in May.  Several students at Dogwood Elementary received helmets from INOVA Trauma Services.  Wrist bands, book marks and helmet posters were distributed to all schools that signed up to participate.

Ped safety McNair

McNair Students Make Pedestrian Safety Video

Student patrols and their siblings from McNair Upper helped make a Pedestrian Safety video about crossing the street.  With the assistance of Lt. Jason Long, Pfc. Christina Gaizick, and FCPS producer/videographer Andrew Vo the video was shot in April in front of McNair Upper.  The video can be used by schools on their morning news shows to remind students of the 5 rules for crossing the street.  If you would like to preview the video click here.

Near Miss Data Collection

Fairfax Families for Safe Streets is collecting near miss data.  If you witness a near miss either on a bike or as a pedestrian you can report it.  https://ffx.novasafestreets.org/near-miss-and-dangerous-intersection-survey/

The safety advocacy group is working with Virginia Tech to help identify dangerous intersections and dangerous roads for vulnerable users.  Information is collected anonymously and shared with FCPD and Fairfax Department of Transportation.
