A message from Principal, Amy Miller:

Dear Kilmer Families,

It is hard to believe we are headed into the final week of the 2020-2021 school year. Thank you to the entire Kilmer community for your support and partnership throughout this entire school year.

We want to take a moment to say goodbye and best of luck to our staff members who are retiring and to those who will be starting a new adventure.

We thank the following teachers for their service to FCPS and Kilmer and wish them all the best in retirement:

Ann Mackenzie - Physical Education

Carla Diamond - Resource Teacher

Denise Peitzman - Special Education

We wish the following teachers the best of luck in their new adventures and opportunities:

Mari Condley - Art

Princess Davis - English

Tayler Dodson - Special Education

Susanna Carey - Library

I also want to share that Michelle Lyttle, assistant principal, has accepted a position as the Director of Student Services at Franklin Middle School starting July 1. Ms. Lyttle has made a positive impact on the Kilmer Community and we will certainly miss her. We wish Ms. Lyttle the best of luck as she starts this new opportunity.  Congratulations Ms. Lyttle!

Sincerely,

Amy Miller

Principal

End of the Year

Next week, during PAWS advisory we will be bringing the year to a close by celebrating and reflecting on this most unique year. This will include a video of congratulations from me, reflecting on the year, and playing some games together.

The students will also be creating a memory wall in which they will all sign their names to leave their “mark” on Kilmer and for us all to remember this year. Students who are virtual can stop by Kilmer to sign the wall on Wednesday, June 16 from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM or Wednesday, July 21 from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM or they can ask that a Kilmer staff member add their name to the wall. We will be posting the form for this request in Schoology.

On June 11, to send our Eighth Graders off, our seventh grade students and all staff will line the halls and sidewalks of Kilmer and clap and cheer for our Eighth Grade students as they process down the halls and out the doors at the end of the day. The students will be making signs of congratulations during PAWS Advisory to wave during this goodbye. Our virtual students will join concurrently. We will be posting the link in Schoology.

We invite students and staff to wear their Kilmer Spirit Wear and Kilmer colors, blue and green, throughout the week to show their Kilmer spirit.

8th Grade Paint Night

Last night, 8th grade students gathered online and in the cafeteria to create artwork to celebrate their years at Kilmer.  Mr. Raubacher created an incredible instructional video that led students step by step through the process of painting the silhouette of Kilmer Middle School.  If you would like to complete the painting at home with your own supplies, you can access the video here.

SOL Score Reporting

We have been notified by the FCPS Office of Assessment and Reporting that this year SOL scores will be communicated to families through ParentVue.  As soon as we have details that scores have been made available, we will send information to families explaining how to access your student’s scores.

Option to Expunge High School Credit Courses taken in Middle School

An additional option is available for high school credit bearing classes taken in middle school. High school credit-bearing courses will be reflected on the middle and high school transcripts. In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. Parents must make this request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course. The request to expunge as well as guidelines and the procedures for expunging grades for high school courses taken in middle school can be found at the following link: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is104.pdf

Any student receiving a C or below in a high school credit course (Algebra 1, Geometry, or a World Language) should consider expunging and retaking the course next school year. Even though students will automatically receive a Pass or No Mark Status in place of a D or F, a student should still expunge the course. Please submit the Request to Expunge High School Courses in Middle School form to your student’s school counselor before the end of the school year.

Student Intention Form

For students who will NOT be attending Kilmer, Marshall, or Madison high school next year, please complete the Student Intention for the Next School Year form, https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/it110.pdf, and return it to Sarah Groh in the Kilmer Student Services office or via email sfgroh@fcps.edu

  • Another FCPS school other than Kilmer or Marshall, or Madison High School
  • A private school in Virginia or out of Virginia
  • Another Virginia public school division outside FCPS
  • Another state public school outside of Virginia
  • A school outside of the United States

Report Cards and Transcript Requests

Final Report Cards can be viewed in SIS ParentVue the week of June 15. SIS ParentVue will be unavailable from Friday, June 18 at 4 pm – Tuesday, June 22 for year end processing. A copy of your child’s final report card will be mailed home the week of June 21st. If your child is moving, and you would like to request a final transcript. Please submit your request to Sarah Groh at sfgroh@fcps.edu. Year End Transcript Requests will be processed after the conclusion of the school year, beginning the week of June 21.

National Junior Honor Society Gallery Walk and Induction Ceremony

Kilmer’s National Junior Honor Society will host a virtual Service Learning Gallery and Induction Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on June 8, 2021, for parents, community members and students. This exciting evening will showcase NJHS candidates and their service learning projects. The NJHS Induction Ceremony will be live streamed and recorded.

Who is Invited to Join Kilmer’s National Junior Honor Society?

We typically send out the NJHS application information around the start of the school year to students who met the Kilmer NJHS GPA requirement (3.7) for their 7th grade year.  In 2020-2021,  we were delayed in our application process, but we anticipate returning to our normal timelines in 2021-2022.  In addition to sending information out to those who qualify, we provide Kilmer News You Choose announcements so parents and students may look for the invitation.

Kilmer’s NJHS: Incorporating Service Learning Into Education

Kilmer Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society focuses on Service Learning, using the model presented by FCPS Service Learning and The Complete Guide to Service Learning manual by Cathryn Berger Kaye, M.A.

In order to realize the five components of NJHS: Citizenship, Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service, Kilmer’s NJHS uses a guided research-based learning method to help students address an authentic community need. Student initiative and structured time for reflection on the service experience are key elements. Students finish the year able to demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge in a Community Night at Kilmer, with a Service Learning Gallery and Induction into the National Junior Honor Society.

More information is available on the Kilmer Middle School website.
