Weekly Newsletter, Wed., June 9

Dear Union Mill,

Monday was a wonderful day celebrating our 6th grade students. We held our promotion ceremony in the morning and continued celebrating them in the afternoon with a drive-thru car parade. Please check out our Facebook page for hundreds of pictures of the parade and our promotion ceremony can be enjoyed on this link. (Be sure to open in Chrome.) Congratulations to all our 6th grade students and families!

This is the time of year that can be bittersweet. We celebrate many and wish them well in a new adventure. We are saying good-bye to our 6th grade, many other students, and some families. If you are leaving Union Mill this year, we wish you all the best and please know that each family has made a difference at our school. We also bid farewell to staff members. Leaving us this year are:

--Kim Deninger, special ed teacher, (1 year) will be moving to Massachusetts;

--Jennifer Neimeyer, ESOL teacher, (1 year) will be full time at Halley Elementary;

--Katy Kownacki, 6th grade teacher, (2 years) will be teaching English at Liberty Middle School;

--Rachel Campbell, kindergarten teacher, (8 years) will be moving to South Carolina with her husband;

--Ehren McLaurin, 3rd grade teacher, (8 years) will be getting married and moving to South Carolina;

--Adrienne Schumacher, instructional assistant, will be retiring after 18 years at Union Mill;

--Elizabeth Obester, Assistant Principal, retiring after 1 year at Union Mill and 25 years with Fairfax County Public Schools.

We are also saying so long for now to 3 staff members that will be taking a year off: Kristen Elder, Katie Kada, and Brooke Ream.

Union Mill is the great school it is because of our wonderful staff members.  Thank you to each of these staff members for their dedication and love of our students.

We continue to try to collect all library books from this year and last year. We have approximately 225 books out there in the community and hope to get every last one back so other children can enjoy the books. Please bring books to the front door of the school. Either ring the bell or leave the books on the bookcase.

We also need to collect laptops from our virtual students. Families should plan to return student laptops between 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Friday, June 11, or Tuesday, June 15, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Laptops can also be dropped off at school on Monday, June 14, from 9:00 - 1:00 PM. Families will be charged $472 for a non-returned laptop and $23 for a charger that is not returned. Specific details on return requirements are listed below.

Have a great rest of the week, wonderful last day of school, and an amazing summer. Thank you for your unwavering support this year; I cannot tell you how much it has been appreciated. I will continue to share pertinent information as it becomes available during the summer.

Best,

Kathy
