Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

CONGRATULATIONS!

AS WE FINISH UP SCHOOL YEAR 2020-2021

It has been quite the ride for our class of 2021. They have been through so much as a graduating class, but, as I have witnessed, they have persevered through the pandemic and are off to wonderful places and opportunities as they move on from FCPS.  What stories they will have to tell when they are older!  I am so happy we can give them the send off they deserve in-person!  As graduations unfold over the next few days for our Dranesville families---CONGRATULATIONS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2021!

CONGRATULATIONS to to our sixth graders and eighth graders as they transition into a new school year and new opportunities next year.  We are so proud of you!!!!

School/Senior News

Herndon HS

  • NJROTC held its first live Change of Command ceremony in two years. We honored our senior members and watched as the juniors formally took command of the group. A special thank you to our keynote speaker, Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Barnum, USMC (ret) who charged the cadets with taking the word “failure” out of their vocabulary and continuing their hard work.
  • The Hispanic Leadership Alliance—a certified employee group of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) employees—presented scholarships to 21 students on Monday, May 10. Scholarship recipients were recognized for leadership and mentoring skills in their educational and social activities. Candidates are committed to furthering their education while improving their communities. Each of the applicants will be the first in their families to attend a postsecondary institution.

    • Herndon High School winners:

Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton Visits Dranesville

Karen Keys-Gamarra and I hosted a special visitor last week as Cooper MS and Forestville ES showed off their hard work to Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. She was happy to see Federal funds in practice that were sent to FCPS and how we are managing students in the building 4 days per week while also taking care of our virtual students. Our amazing principals, Lisa Barrow and Tony Washington, talked about overcoming the challenges of the last year and our plans to take care of the social, emotional, and academic needs of every single student as we move forward.  We visited math, band, beginning strings, family and consumer science, science, preschool, kindergarten, second grade, PE, fifth grade GE and AAP and more.  A highlight at both schools was hearing from students, both in person and virtual, as to how they dealt with virtual learning and came out on the other side doing well and ready to move onto summer and next school year.
