Virtual Author Visits

Our 3rd & 4th grade classes will welcome local author John Gallagher on Tuesday, June 1st. Mr. Gallagher is the author of the Max Meow series. These fun graphic novels feature a cat crusader and they’re sure to keep your students giggling! John Gallagher is the art director of the National Wildlife Federation’s Ranger Rick magazine and has been drawing comics since he was five!

Our 6th graders will have the opportunity to meet author Keir Graff on Tuesday, June 8th! Mr. Graff is the author of several popular titles, including The Other Felix, The Matchstick Castle, and The Phantom Tower. His latest release, The Tiny Mansion, follows a middle schooler who is forced to spend her summer off-the-grid with her family in a tiny home!

Students will enjoy a presentation and Q&A sessions.

6th Grade Recognition Event

The 6th Grade Recognition Event will be held on Wednesday, June 9th. We are hoping you can help get out some very important information.

Each student is allowed no more than (2) guests, and this event will be a SHINE only event. In the case of rain, the event will be an all virtual event (more info to come on that if it rains). The event will take place on the blacktop area between the modulars and the playground. The final details of this are still being worked through, so be on the lookout for that communication from Admin.

Below is the link for the Sign Up Genius. We are hoping you can share this with your classes. Unlike years past, we are unable to have a party following the Recognition Event. Virtual students will be invited to attend the ceremony at the school but will need to leave prior to lunch in order to follow the FCPS lunch guidelines. Following the outdoor event, in person students will have lunch/movie indoors....again, no outdoor activities this year.

6th Grade Baby Pictures!

For this year's 6th grade recognition celebration I will be creating a slideshow of baby photos featuring kids from all classes. Teachers will be able to show the video in class and share with their virtual students, and may be posted to Google Classroom as well. It's easy to participate and we hope that you will!

Here's how to do it:

  1.  Email a baby photo of your kiddo to jenna.vonelling@gmail.com by JUNE 4TH.
  2. Higher resolution is better. If you are sending from your phone, choose "large" or "original size" if given the option. Email me if you have any questions.
  3. Be sure to tell me in your email your child's full name and what class they are in.

Mrs. Fernandez Farewell Parade

As many of you know, Mrs. Fernandez is retiring this year. Let's send her off in style and show her the appreciation she so deserves. Mark your calendars for Monday, June 7th. There will be a parade in front of Mantua Elementary School beginning at 3:45pm. You can walk, drive or bike through the parade.  Feel free to bring a note, picture or any memento that you'd like to give to Principal Fernandez. All are invited to join.

Let's show Mrs. Fernandez how much she is truly loved by all. Please spread the word to the community and Mantua alumni as well! Any questions, contact Meri Farling at merifarling@hotmail.com.

Mrs. Fernandez Tribute Video

After 26 years of serving Mantua Elementary as Principal, our leader Mrs. Jan-Marie Fernandez is retiring. While we’re lucky to still have her as our neighbor she will greatly be missed at our school. We invite past and present students and families to take a minute and record a quick message. Let’s show Ms. Fernandez some Mantua love!

Here is how to participate:

  1. Go to our tribute video website
  2. Click on the "Record/Upload Video" big red button
  3. Record your video from your computer or phone (TIP: If you are recording the video from your phone make sure to hold your phone HORIZONTAL!)

You can also record messages as groups or as a family! Example messages can include:

  • “Hi Mrs. Fernandez, remember me? Jane Doe from 1997? Good luck with everything!”
  • “Thank you Mrs. Fernandez for everything”
  •  “Congrats on retiring we’ll miss you from the Doe family”

If you have a fun memory please share that too! Make sure to say your name and the year you left! Deadline to submit videos is Friday, June 4.

Summer Garden Volunteers Needed

The Discovery Garden is in full swing and in an effort to keep everything healthy and looking its best the Garden Committee is seeking volunteers to help with occasional watering, weeding and general clean-up over the next few months. Temperatures are on the rise so we just want to ensure happy and hydrated plants over the summer break so there's a beautiful display to greet everyone back next fall. No gardening experience is required and instructions about needed tasks, supplies, etc...will be provided. If interested, please contact Karin Hudson at garden@mantuapta.org.
