All rising 7th graders who will be going to Franklin Middle School next year, please be on the lookout for an invitation for a Meet and Greet with Principal Wright.

SOL Testing Updates

ot

Next week is our very last week of SOL testing for students in grades 3-6! Students who have been absent for a test will be scheduled for a makeup during the 1st week of June--on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

Please be sure your child arrives to school on time so that testing may begin no later than 9:30 AM. This will allow students to have plenty of time to finish their tests.

One More Week for VRSPTs

Students at Lees Corner who are eligible to take these tests have received a test ticket for remote reading and math tests. In addition, eligible 5th graders received test tickets for a remote science test. They can find the test tickets in their Google email.

Please email latapper@fcps.edu if your child did not receive their test ticket. Remember, these tests are only available to students who remained fully virtual and who did not take an SOL test.

Students have until Friday, June 4th to complete the tests. The tests are available to students Monday-Friday until 10:00 PM each day. Tests are not available over the weekend or on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31st.

These tests are optional.

What are the VRSPTs? They are the Virginia Remote Student Progress Tests and they were designed by the Virginia Department of Education for use by students in grades 3-6 who have remained 100% virtual and who will not be taking SOL tests. The purpose of the tests is to provide parents and teachers with information on students' learning.

School Supply Orders

ss

The PTA is offering parents the convenient services of pre-packaged supply kits. This service by The Write Stuff ensures your child or children have the school supplies they need next year without having to run to several different stores to find them. This year, the sales from the school supplies will benefit the PTA.

Each kit will contain exactly what is on your child’s supply list.

Supplies can be ordered using the link below

https://www.write-stuff.com/storefront/school/leescorner

Orders placed online by June 13, 2021 will be sent directly to Lees Corner. Orders can still be placed online until July 15, 2019 but will include a delivery fee and be sent to your home address.

If school supplies are ordered by June 13th and shipped to the school they will be delivered directly to your students’ classroom.

If you have any questions, please contact Elaine Chen at elaine.y.chen@gmail.com

June 8th is a Virtual Day

Little Feet Meet Coming to LCES!

lfm

Our school has the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Little Feet Meet sponsored by Special Olympics. Here at Lees Corner, we value inclusion and the opportunity for our different classes to interact in a fun, organized, and safe way!

On June 9th 2021, each class will have the opportunity to engage in an outdoor program with their class! Each class will participate in different stations and the program will last about an hour for each class.

Virtual students will receive information about how they can participate online and be involved in the fun!

As we get closer to the event, there will be an e-mail from your child’s homeroom teacher detailing what your child will need to bring, wear, and how to prepare for the event!

We are so excited to bring this program to Lees Corner! Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know if you have any questions!

6th Grade Promotion Celebrations

We are very excited about upcoming plans to celebrate our 6th graders during a virtual promotion ceremony and car parade on Thursday, June 10th.

The virtual promotion ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.  We are requesting that all of our in-person 6th graders remain virtual on this date. This plan permits each 6th grader student and their family to be together to celebrate this momentous occasion. The teachers and school staff will greet students and their families online for the promotion ceremony promptly at 9:30 a.m.

The 6th Grade car parade will begin at 12:00 p.m. here at LCES. This will provide both virtual and in person families the opportunity to visit the school campus and be greeted by LCES school staff, teachers, and students.

The Car Parade will loop through our Kiss & Ride and Front Bus Loop. 6th Grade cars should enter the Kiss and Ride entrance from the Stringfellow side of Hollinger, making a right turn into the parking lot. We will be working with our local police department to help manage the flow and impact of traffic along Stringfellow, Hollinger, and Lees Corner Rd.

Classroom teachers will share additional car parade details with 6th grade families regarding the schedule for each class and suggestions for car decorations. The 6th Grade team will also share details with families regarding additional promotion celebrations.

Summer Learning at LCES

ss

Every FCPS elementary school will have summer learning opportunities designed to support students as they develop executive functioning skills, mathematics skills, and language arts skills. The learning will provide an opportunity for students who have been identified using various criteria.

Lees Corner school staff have begun contacting families of students who will be invited to participate in the summer program. The total number of students that can attend will be impacted by the number of teachers available to work this summer.

The Summer School program will start July 12, 2021 and end July 30, 2021.

For more information regarding our LCES Summer School Programs, please contact our Site Director, Ms. Kris Kang at  kkkang@fcps.edu.

WordMasters Winners

wm

We are very proud to announce that a team representing Lees Corner Elementary recently earned Highest Honors in the 2020-2021 WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually. The sixth grade team scored an impressive 183 points out of a possible 200 in the last of three meets this year, placing tenth in the nation.

A team of third graders from Lees Corner Elementary placed tenth nationally in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 500 points out of a possible 600.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fourth grader Athreya Yedavalli and sixth graders Yukta Thirumalai and Harini Chandhu each earned a perfect score of 20 in the recent meet.  Nationally, only 51 fourth graders and 40 sixth graders achieved this result.  Other students at Lees Corner Elementary who achieved outstanding results in the last meet of the year include third graders Gioia Chang and Shashaank Thammishetti, fourth graders Cecilia Frank and Phillip Henslee, fifth grader Ellie Cartmill, and sixth graders Brooke Strenglein, Anna Vardanyan and Aaron Vieceli.

Fourth grader Athreya Yedavalli also earned individual Highest Honors in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 58 out of a possible 60 points.  Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division.

The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Lauri Hilburger, Kristen Lynch, and Nicole Pierce.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.  Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight.  They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools.  Further information is available at the company’s website:  http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com
