Waples Mill Updates 5/27/2021

Good Afternoon Waples Mill Families,

Here are this week's updates:

Waples Mill Student Laptop Return

WMES students who currently have a school laptop checked out will need to return it at the end of this school year. When returning the laptop, please be sure to also return any chargers, mice, etc. that were issued to your student. Parents will be billed for any devices and peripherals not returned.

Laptop Replacement Fee $472.00

Charger Replacement Fee $23.00

Please plan on your child returning their laptop as listed below, based on their attendance method:

4 Day/Week and Thurs/Fri In-Person Students: Laptops and chargers will be turned in during the school day on Thursday, June 10. Please help your student make sure to pack everything that needs to be turned in that day.

Virtual Students: Please return all devices and peripherals on Friday, June 11 from 2:45pm-5:00pm. Parents should pull into the bus loop and check in with a staff member. If your student doesn’t need their laptop (you have another device your student can use to access their class) and you’d like to return it prior to that time, please reach out to Brian Crosson (btcrosson@fcps.edu) to schedule your return time.

Tues/Wed In-Person Students: Follow Virtual Students' directions.

*Students in ANY FCPS Summer Program are not required to return their laptops until the conclusion of their summer program (this includes 6th graders).

Student Application for Virtual Enrollment, Based on Health Needs, Due May 28

If your child is currently attending school virtually and you would like for them to remain virtual due to their documented health or medical needs for the 2021-22 school year, the deadline to submit the COVID-19 Health Eligibility Form and the Virtual Enrollment Application is Friday, May 28, which is one week later than the original deadline of May 21. Please be aware that the medical need must be based upon the student, not a sibling’s or a family member’s health condition.

All parents of virtual students were sent a letter on May 17 with information on how to apply.

Kindergarten Registration Information for the 2021-2022 School Year:

Virginia State law requires that children who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021 are eligible to be enrolled in kindergarten.  Students whose fifth birthday falls after September 30, 2021 are not eligible to enroll.  If you have a child eligible for kindergarten to begin this August, please view the information at the following link to begin the registration process:

If you have further questions, please contact our registrar, Carla Collins, chcollins@fcps.edu, 703-390-7700.

Calendar Reminder: FCPS Schools and Offices Closed on May 31 for Memorial Day Holiday

As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 31, for the Memorial Day holiday. Students are not expected to complete asynchronous assignments that day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, June 1. See the complete 2020-21 school year calendar

End-of-Year Medication Pickup Information

don't forget

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (2:15 p.m.) on the last day of school.  Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.  It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program.  Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication.  If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Phillips, our school health room aide, at (703) 390-7700.  Thank you!

All Students to Be Virtual on June 8 Due to Democratic Primary Election

Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous  learning day (no in-person classes) for all students.

Student Intentions for the Next School Year (2021-2022):

If your child/children (Kindergarten through Grade 6) will be attending another school in Fairfax County or outside of Fairfax County Public Schools (public or private) for the next school year (2021-2022), please fill out the Student Intentions form, which can be accessed at the following link:

https://waplesmilles.fcps.edu/announcements/students-intentions-2021-2022-school-year

Please email the completed form to Carla Collins, Registrar, chcollins@fcps.edu.  Parents of students who are transferring to another school need to start the registration process with the new school as soon as possible.  A transcript will be sent to the new school upon receipt of a records request to Carla Collins.

Please note:  If your child will be joining us at Waples Mill again next year, there is no need to fill out the form. Your child’s record will automatically roll back into our Student Information System and no new registration paperwork is required for the new school year.

Reminder about Picking Students Up Early from School

If you need to pick your child up from school early, we ask that you do so prior to 3:45 p.m.  This will ensure that our parking lot is clear for buses and that our office staff can support our regularly scheduled dismissal process.  Thank you for your cooperation!
