Summer News From The Library

What? RCMS Summer Book Swap

Why? To get books in the hands of our students for summer reading.

When? Book donations accepted starting now

Where? You can drop books off at the donation box outside door #1 or in the library on any school day 7:00 am - 2:15 pm. (Quarantining of books is no longer required in FCPS or FCPL).

Who? Anyone can donate new or gently used middle school age range books. ALL students will be eligible to choose one book from the book swap in June, whether they donated books or not (assuming enough books are donated). Virtual students may visit the school to pick a book.

If there are enough books donated, students will be able to choose additional books the last week of school. Any remaining books will be donated to Chantilly Public Library at the end of the school year.

Now is a great time to spring clean some unused books from your home and make them available to other students in our school community!

Medication pick up

All Student Medications Must be Picked up from the clinic by June 11th

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school.  Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.  It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school, or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services.  A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or Over-the-counter, to be kept at school.      More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form.

If you have any questions, please contact the RCMS health team, Jackie Plunkett at 703-925-3610 or Jeanne Frost at 703-481-4078.

Reporting Absences

If a student needs to miss any class time at all, be it one period or a full day, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the RCMS Attendance Office. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred) from the main page of the RCMS website:
  2. Send an email with full details to: CarsonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu, or
  3. Call the attendance line at 703-925-3636 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

If your student is scheduled to be in the building that day but, instead, needs to attend classes virtually, it is very important to let us know!

Please contact the attendance office with the methods above so we don't worry why your student is not in the building. Parents will see the “SYC” code in ParentVUE when their student is absent on their assigned in-person day, but attends class online. FCPS eNotify messages will also go out to parents who have not reported their student's absence.

If your in-person student will be picked up early for an appointment, please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal. Students participating virtually who will be missing class due to appointments or otherwise should have parents contact attendance with the times and the reason the student will be missing classes.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the RCMS Attendance page.

Notifications for In-Person Students

If your in-person student will be picked up early for an appointment, please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal.  Students participating virtually who will be missing class due to appointments or otherwise should have parents contact the attendance office with the times and the reason the student will be missing classes.

If your student is scheduled to be in the building on any school day but, instead, needs to attend classes virtually, it is very important to let us know.  Please contact the attendance office with the methods below so we don't worry why your student is not in the building. Parents will see the “SYC” code in ParentVUE when their student is not physically present on their assigned in-person day, but does attend class online. FCPS eNotify messages will also go out to parents who have not reported their student's absence.

To report an absence or virtual participation, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred) from the main page of the RCMS website.
  2. Send an email with full details to: CarsonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu, or
