FCPS to Require Masks for the Remainder of the School Year

For the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, FCPS will be requiring students and staff to continue to wear masks and socially distance during instructional time inside school buildings. Students will be required to wear masks at recess but will not be required to be socially distanced. FCPS will maintain CDC requirements of 3 feet social distance in classrooms and 6 feet social distancing in our cafeterias through June 15. Both these requirements are aligned with the Fairfax County Health Department guidance and helps maintain consistency as we finish out the year.

As per national, state and local guidance, there are unique and specific mask and social distancing requirements for graduation, athletics, school performances, and other school-specific events held indoors and outdoors. FCPS will be transitioning to updated guidelines for these specific events starting May 28.

For specific information regarding these requirements, please visit this webpage.

Field Day 2021

Dear Physical Education Families,

This year we’re excited to be participating in OPEN National Field Day! This event brings thousands of schools together to celebrate the importance of staying physically active for both physical and mental health.

Our field day event will take place on Tuesday, June 8th. We’re working with OPENPhysEd.org resources to ensure that our students can participate safely. Most of the activities can be practiced and/or completed at home using OPEN National Field Day event cards and YouTube videos.

We encourage you to visit the National Field Day Online Event Center to view and practice events (https://openphysed.org/eventcenter2021).

This year we’re encouraging students to participate in as many National Field Day events as possible and to track their participation on the OPEN National Field Day Scorecard. That scorecard can be found in your choice of file formats on the OPEN webpage (www.openphysed.org/nfd-planpromote).

You can also use the new KINZOO app for kids and families with an integrated Field Day Scorecard. The KINZOO app is available for Apple or Android devices. Learn more about KINZOO by visiting this webpage: https://kinzooopenfieldday.com.

The OPEN National Field Day opening ceremony is available at this link: https://openphysed.org/fieldday. Join the fun!

Thank you for helping your student prepare for participation in Field Day.

GO BE GREAT!

AAPI Heritage Month Historical Marker Contest

AAPI

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (“AAPI”) Heritage Month in the Commonwealth, Governor Northam launched the inaugural AAPI Heritage Month Historical Marker Contest to celebrate the history and achievements of AAPI Virginians.

The AAPI Heritage Month Marker Contest is an opportunity for Virginia students, educators, and families to learn about the important role AAPI individuals have played in the Commonwealth’s history and submit ideas for new historical markers to the Department of Historic Resources. Additional information about the contest and resources to help educators guide their classes through important discussions on AAPI history and initiate project-based learning are available here.

Student submissions are due by Tuesday, June 15.

The Department of Historical Resources will review all submissions in consultation with Governor Northam and members of his Cabinet, and five to ten winning submissions will be installed as new historical markers along Virginia’s roadways.
