Weekly Newsletter, Wed., May 26

Dear Union Mill,

It is hard to believe we are planning for the end of the year which will happen in two and a half short weeks. Here are some important things to keep in mind as we wind down this year.

-- Please return all library books by Friday. In person students should bring books to school and virtual families can bring books to the front door of the school. Either ring the bell or leave the books on the bookcase. Last chance to return library books via the library book bus will be June 7.

-- Laptop Return - Virtual students should plan to return their laptop between 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Friday, June 11, or Tuesday, June 15, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Laptops can also be dropped off at school on Monday, June 14, from 9:00 - 1:00 PM. Families will be charged $472 for a non-returned laptop and $23 for a charger that is not returned. Specific details on return requirements are listed below.

-- Our 6th grade promotion ceremony will be virtual on Monday, June 7, at 9:30 AM. A virtual ceremony will allow all students and families to participate. We will have a celebratory car parade that ends in the bus loop for 6th grade students in the afternoon from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Please follow the parade route shown below so we don't back up traffic on Union Mill Road. If you don't have a 6th grade, please consider cheering our students on along the parade route!

Don't forget next week is our College and Career Week. Our wonderful counselors have some great activities planned for your children. Be sure to check out the information in this newsletter and help get your child ready for the future by participating in the spirit portion of next week.

We welcomed over 100 families to our virtual Kindergarten Orientation last night. If you have a new neighbor or friend in our boundary with a kindergarten-aged child, please encourage them to call the school to register their child and receive important information. Here is the link to hear last night's presentation (open in Chrome). Even if you don't have a kindergarten age child, be sure to watch the first 6 minutes of the meeting to see a great video that reminds us of the wonder of kindergarten!

As a reminder, there will be no in-person instruction on Tuesday, June 8, due to the Virginia Democratic Primary Election. Since schools must be open to the public during an election and because 165 school facilities are used as polling locations, all students will participate in synchronous, on-line instruction on the 8th.

Have a great rest of the week and enjoy the Memorial Day 3-day weekend and holiday. Thank you for your continued support.

Best,

Kathy

Your Input is Needed

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has received American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funds to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools. The funds also address the impact of COVID-19 on students by supporting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs. Community engagement has always been a valued and essential component of FCPS’ budgeting process and we are actively seeking stakeholder input on how our community would like the grant to be used in support of students, staff, and school operations. You are invited to speak at a Fairfax County School Board Public Hearing about the ESSER III grant on June 7 at 6 p.m. Sign up to speak.

Members of the FCPS community can also submit their input using the FCPS Online Feedback Form. For more information on the ESSR III grant, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/ESSER3We appreciate your participation in the process to help inform how the ESSER III grant funding will be used in Fairfax County Public Schools.

College and Career Week

We are excited to celebrate college and career diversity this year at Union Mill from June 1st-4th!  While we are unable to host a large, in-person career event, we would like to introduce the world of work to our students.  Students will have the opportunity to learn more about different careers from our parent, teacher, and school community - and to think about their own future plans!  Our plans include:

  • A choice board with college and career activities
  • Parent-submitted Flip Grid videos highlighting various career options
  • UM staff college/career guessing game
  • Various dress-up days to celebrate college and career fun!

FCPS to Require Masks for the Remainder of the School Year

For the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, FCPS will be requiring students and staff to continue to wear masks and socially distance during instructional time inside school buildings. Students will be required to wear masks at recess but will not be socially distanced. FCPS will maintain CDC requirements of 3 feet social distance in classrooms and 6 feet social distancing in our cafeterias through June 15. Both these requirements are aligned with the Fairfax County Health Department guidance and helps maintain consistency as we finish out the year.

As per national, state, and local guidance, there are unique and specific mask and social distancing requirements for graduation, athletics, school performances, and other school-specific events held indoors and outdoors. FCPS will be transitioning to updated guidelines for these specific events starting May 28. For specific information regarding these requirements, please visit this webpage
