Principal's Message

c

Dear Families,

Mr. Credle and I want to wish you a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and hope the sunshine and slower pace will be just what we all need!  We have some busy events coming up at Oak Hill, so I encourage you to read through our 6th grade promotion festivities and yearbook distribution plans.  Information about our laptop collection will be sent home tomorrow.   I am so proud of our students and how they have been participating both virtually and in person!  I do believe that the laughter and smiles are surrounding us again and I thank you for encouraging them to log on or show up and try their best.  We know it doesn’t “just happen” without your support!

I hope you are finding ways to take care of your own self.  As parents, we are sometimes the last to acknowledge when we are on empty and need to take a break.  I hope this weekend brings you a few moments to do just that and spend time with those whom you have missed.

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

FCPS to Require Masks for the Remainder of the School Year

f

For the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, FCPS will be requiring students and staff to continue to wear masks and socially distance during instructional time inside school buildings. Students will be required to wear masks at recess but will not be socially distanced. FCPS will maintain CDC requirements of 3 feet social distance in classrooms and 6 feet social distancing in our cafeterias through June 15. Both these requirements are aligned with the Fairfax County Health Department guidance and helps maintain consistency as we finish out the year.

As per national, state, and local guidance, there are unique and specific mask and social distancing requirements for graduation, athletics, school performances, and other school-specific events held indoors and outdoors. FCPS will be transitioning to updated guidelines for these specific events starting May 28.

For specific information regarding these requirements, please visit this webpage

Calendar Reminders: May 31 and June 8

Calendar Reminder

FCPS Schools and Offices Closed for Memorial Day Holiday

As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 31, for the Memorial Day holiday. Students are not expected to complete asynchronous assignments that day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, June 1. See the complete 2020-21 school year calendar

All Students to Be Virtual on June 8 Due to Democratic Primary Election

Tuesday, June 8, is the Democratic Primary Election. Because the Fairfax County Electoral Board and City of Fairfax Electoral Board will be using 165 school facilities as polling locations, June 8 will be a virtual synchronous learning day (no in-person classes) for students.  Get more information about the primary elections.

SOL Makeup Testing

s

Students in grades 3-6 have been taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests.  If your child missed a test they have been contacted by the school for a makeup testing date.  Please email Mr. Credle at cmcredle@fcps.edu if you have questions about testing.

Sixth Grade Celebrations

d

We are excited to celebrate our sixth graders as they prepare to move up to middle school.  On Monday, June 7th, all sixth graders (virtual and in-person) are invited to participate in an outdoor party on the Oak Hill fields from 1-2:30 pm.   Mrs. DeVore, Mr. Credle and the sixth grade team are planning this party with parent volunteers.  We will also be offering a virtual celebration for those students not attending the in-person party.

Please RSVP here to let us know if your child will attend the in-person or the virtual party.

More details will be sent out this week by our parent volunteers Angie Frey, Taruna Agarwal, and Melissa Dolenc.  Thank you to the many parents who have volunteered to assist the planning committee!   Unfortunately, there will not be a rain date for the outdoor party but all students can pivot to a virtual party during the last week of school.

On Tuesday, June 8th, we will hold a Virtual Moving Up ceremony and car parade.  The moving up ceremony will begin at 10:30 am with all sixth graders and their families.  It will conclude by parents clicking on individual links to their child’s homeroom presentation.  Links will be sent to families closer to the event.

We will hold our first ever car parade for our newly promoted students through the Oak Hill neighborhood along Kinross Circle at 2pm.  Families are encouraged to participate in the car parade with their sixth grade child.  While on the parade route, all vehicles must obey all traffic signs.

Car Parade Information

We would like to invite all K-5 Oak Hill students and families to line the parade route and cheer for our 6th graders on June 8th at 2pm.  The parade will start at corner of Kinross Circle and Centreville Road (where there is a stoplight), pass Oak Hill, and proceed to the second intersection of Kinross Circle and Centreville Road.  You are encouraged to make signs with words of congratulations and wear your Oak Hill spirit wear or blue and white colors. We hope to see you there!

Yearbook Information

c

Yearbooks are in and distribution began last week.  If your child is in-person, classroom teachers have distributed them.  If you have not picked up your yearbook, you may pick it up anytime Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.  Please ring the front buzzer and a staff member will bring you your child’s yearbook!

Domino's Fundraiser

s

A big shout out to everyone in our Oak Hill Community who helped make this month’s Dominos Fundraiser a huge success!  We made a whopping $559. 71 with 99 orders along with an additional $600 earned from our Dominos Fundraiser in February!  This money directly supports our students and staff and your contribution is very much appreciated!  Go Oak Hill!

ESOL Tip of the Week

a

Justify

This month we will focus on using the language function Justify.  Can you share your thinking in a small group or with a family member?  Use the following three steps:  explaining, giving evidence, and proving and defending an idea. Give your child a choice between two items.  Have your child choose what is the best choice.  When justifying it, students should be explaining why they chose that item.  Students should remember to use phrases like “I would rather…, because….. If,...then.”

Help clarify point of view.   “From my point of view___because ___.”  And “I think ___ because ___.”  Give evidence and be ready to explain your decision.  Decide together which side has the stronger side. Use language to give reasons for an action, decision, point of view, or way of thinking. Enjoy listing the pros and cons of a topic such as having a pet or playing sports or eating vegetables versus candy.  Give several reasons to support your ideas.  After hearing your partner, you may change your mind.

To learn more about how having meaningful language experiences support literacy and foster reading and writing success, please refer to an article from Scholastic found here.
