NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson Families:

A week from today, we will have graduated our Class of 2021!  Shortly thereafter the Class of 2022 will begin their senior year journey.  It is an exciting time in life and I encourage everyone to stop and smell the roses as they move through this next year. It will zip by quickly and before you know it, I’ll be writing to you about how “this time last year we were coming out of a pandemic“ and it will seem so far in the rear view mirror. I hope.

As we have more students returning to school and we have more interactions, there is an unfortunate increase in inappropriate behavior. Should you or your child have experienced anything concerning, please reach out to me or your assistant principal. I encourage any incidents of sexual harassment/assault be shared with me directly or the FCPS Title IX Coordinator at titleixcoordinator@fcps.edu. Student safety both physically and emotionally is our number one concern.

I wish all our families a safe and peaceful Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to ALL our military families; your service both past, present and future is appreciated and your sacrifices do not go unrecognized.

Stay connected,

Dr. Floyd

2. End of Year Checklist

Please refer to this checklist as we close out the 2020-2021 school year:

  • Return your FCPS student laptop (see #3)
  • Return Textbooks/Library books (see #4)
  • Return school-owned uniforms and instruments
  • Pick up medications from the Clinic

3. Laptop Return Days

We are required to collect each student’s FCPS-assigned laptop and charger by the end of this school year.  We will reimage each laptop this summer and students will receive a laptop back in the fall. Underclassmen will need to tape their name to the top of the laptop if their name card has been removed.

Guidelines for the collection of laptops:

  • All SENIORS and/or students leaving Woodson must complete the following steps before turning in their laptops.  ALL local files, bookmarks, and programs will be erased.
  • All Students Returning to Woodson must complete the following steps before turning in their laptops. All local files and bookmarks must be backed up or they will be erased.
  • Laptops must be returned free of stickers, markings and other drawings, or the student will be charged a $50.00 cleaning fee.
  • Students should turn in their laptop and charging cord.  Students should keep their case, we will not collect cases from students.
  • If a student lost their laptop or their laptop cord, they should visit the Woodson Technology site and scroll down to the Property Damage or Loss section.  Payments will be made through MySchoolBucks.  Students should bring a paper receipt from MySchoolBucks with them when they come to laptop collection.

Collection Dates & Times

  • Underclassmen - tape student name to the top of the laptop if name card has been removed.
  • Thursday, June 10th - 11:35 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. In-person students will return their laptops to the Library. Students will receive a receipt when they turn in their equipment.
  • Friday, June 11th – 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Students should bring their laptop into the main lobby entrance to have their equipment checked in and receive a receipt.

4. Textbook/Library Book Returns

Please continue to return textbooks that are no longer needed for this school year.

If you are an in-person student, please return your textbooks to the subject labeled carts in the hallways.

If you are a virtual student, please return your textbooks to the cart outside of door 1.

This I Believe

Leadership students delivered their "This I Believe" speeches this week.

5. Grading Information - Deadline on Tuesday, June 1st

Earlier this school year, FCPS adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students finish the school year strongly. One of the key changes for high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade (A through D) in select courses.

As communicated by FCPS earlier this week, the deadline to make this request has been extended to allow students and families more time to gain information about fourth quarter progress before making a final decision. Underclass students now have until Tuesday, June 1st to designate a final mark for up to two of their current courses as Pass instead of a final letter grade "A" through "D". To submit a request, please use this form.

Please note that grade changes will be automatically applied after the year end grading process has closed, so there may be a delay between the end of the year and when the grade is actually changed to a P. Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

6. Upcoming Asynchronous or Virtual Learning Days

Wednesday, June 2nd (rain date June 3) will be a VIRTUAL ASYNCHRONOUS learning day for students in grades 9-11 due to the Woodson Class of 2021 Graduation. (No students in-person; asynchronous assignments.)

Friday, June 4th will be a VIRTUAL SYNCHRONOUS learning day as Woodson will be hosting another FCPS schools' graduation. Dismissal at 11:35am (No students in-person; synchronous teacher-led instruction.)

Thank you for your understanding in this situation as we support another FCPS school.

11. Updated Mask Guidance

School policy regarding masks remains unchanged. For the remainder of the FY 2020-2021 school year, FCPS will be requiring students and staff to continue to wear masks and socially distance both indoors and outdoors on school grounds.  While inside on school property, students, teachers, staff, and visitors must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.

This is consistent with CDC guidelines which state that schools should continue with all current mitigation strategies through the end of the school year despite updated guidance for fully vaccinated people. FCPS will maintain CDC requirements of 3 feet social distance in classrooms and 6 feet social distancing in our cafeterias through June 15.

Events effective May 28, 2021

  • High School Athletics
  • School Performances including promotion/award ceremonies/drama performances (both during school hours and after school hours)
  • Graduations (FCPS will be streaming all graduation ceremonies)
  • All Night Grad Parties, Prom, and other gatherings (PTA, PTO, PTSA events)

Indoors - Masks required; no social distancing requirement

Outdoors - Masks NOT required; no social distancing requirement

School bus - Masks required; no social distancing requirement

12. FCPS Receives ESSER III Funding; Community Feedback Wanted

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has received American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funds to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools. The funds also address the impact of COVID-19 on students by supporting their academic, social, emotional, and mental health needs, among others.

FCPS is seeking stakeholder input on how our community would like the grant to be used in support of students, staff, and school operations. The community is invited to speak at a Fairfax County School Board Public Hearing about the ESSER III grant on June 7, at 6 p.m. Sign up to speak. Members of the FCPS community can also submit their input using the FCPS Online Feedback Form. Find more information on the ESSR III grant.

19. Sports Physical Night

Registration is open for Woodson's annual Sports Physical Night on Wednesday, June 16th! Register HERE!

As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a VHSL physical valid for the entirety of the 2021-22 School Year.

Each year it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. Price will be $50 as in previous years.

Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser for the year and ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Appointment times will be available at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.

Want to Volunteer??

If you would like to volunteer please feel free to complete the volunteer registration here. As of now, we are still looking for a few more physicians and HCPs to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

20. NEW VHSL Physical Form for SY2021-22

The VHSL Physical Form must be completed by a parent/guardian and doctor. In order for the physical to be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year, it cannot be filled out and dated by a doctor until May 1, 2021 or after. This must be turned in prior to participating in athletics.
