WTW NEWS & EVENTS

Updated Mask Guidance

School policy regarding masks remains unchanged. For the remainder of the FY 2020-2021 school year, FCPS will be requiring students and staff to continue to wear masks and socially distance both indoors and outdoors on school grounds.  While inside on school property, students, teachers, staff, and visitors must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.

This is consistent with CDC guidelines which state that schools should continue with all current mitigation strategies through the end of the school year despite updated guidance for fully vaccinated people. FCPS will maintain CDC requirements of 3 feet social distance in classrooms and 6 feet social distancing in our cafeterias through June 15.

Athletic and School Performances - May 15- May 27, 2021

Indoors - Masks are required; Social distancing is 3 feet student-to-student, 6 feet between spectators who are not family members.

Outdoors - Masks are NOT required but recommended for unvaccinated; Social distancing is 3 feet student-to-student, 6 feet between spectators who are not family members.

Events effective May 28, 2021

  • High School Athletics

  • School Performances including promotion/award ceremonies/drama performances (both during school hours and after school hours)

  • Graduations (FCPS will be streaming all graduation ceremonies)

  • All Night Grad Parties, Prom, and other gatherings (PTA, PTO, PTSA events)

Indoors - Masks required; no social distancing requirement

Outdoors - Masks NOT required; no social distancing requirement

School bus - Masks required; no social distancing requirement

Attendance Updates

Early Checkouts from School

If your student is in-person and needs to check out during the day, send a note detailing the checkout.  The student should present that note to the Attendance Office upon arrival at school and will be given a pass to leave at the time indicated. For more information regarding attendance procedures, visit the Woodson Attendance Site.

Calls During AP and SOL Testing

During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools, morning attendance telephone calls, texts and emails to home will not occur through Friday, June 11th.

This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing locations (in-person or virtually) during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and emails will still remain in place.

WTW CAVS SPORTS RECAP

Cav Varsity Spring Sports

Varsity Baseball

Woodson’s Varsity outlasted rival Fairfax in a 9-5 victory last Tuesday.  All 11 batters notched hits and 8 scored runs. Leadoff hitter Colin Jones doubled, and scored on an RBI grounder by Colton Lennon.   Freshman Andrew Perks hit an RBI double to right, followed by a single from Co-Captain Vincent Altieri.  Freshman Ethan Conklin then hit an RBI grounder to score PerksJones grounded out, advancing Altieri to 3B.  Lennon walked to put runners on the corners, setting up an exciting double steal where Lennon got into a run down allowing Altieri to steal home.

Anthony Meaders opened the 5th inning with a double to left, and moved to 3B on a bunt single by relief pitcher Lars Greenlee.  Co-Captain Jay Sorkin laid down a squeeze bunt to score Meaders, then beat out the throw for a hit.  Perks singled to load the bases.  Altieri pushed across another run with a sharp grounder up the middle.

Relief pitcher Ben Smallwood kept the Lions in check, allowing only one unearned run.  Fairfax threatened again in the final frame.  A double and two infield singles brought the score to 9-5 with two on and no outs.  Smallwood got a strikeout, but walked the next batter to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate.  The Cavs defense then came up with a game-ending double play from Sorkin to Altieri to Brady Lencz. The win improved the Cavaliers record to 3-4 on the season and 3-2 in Patriot District play.

The Cavs then had a home rematch against the South County Stallions last Thursday. Sophomore Ben Smallwood made his first high school start facing off against Stallions ace Trevor Orth.  The Stallions were looking for revenge after their 9-2 loss in the teams' first meeting.

Orth held the Cavs scoreless over the first five innings while striking out five and yielding only an infield single to Colin JonesSmallwood rose to the moment and pitched a gem of his own, striking out 6 without a walk.  The Stallions managed only a single unearned run against the big right hander who scattered 5 hits over 6 innings, but never seemed to feel the pressure of the tense game.

Trailing 1-0, the Woodson offense rallied in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 3 runs. Coach McColley summoned Brady Lencz to the mound to protect the 3-1 lead.  Lencz got the first two South County hitters with a ground ball to Connor Krahulec at 3B and a strikeout.  The Stallions pulled within a run on a solo home run, but Lencz sealed the win for the Cavs with a fly ball to Jones in center field. The win improved the Cavs to 4-2 in Patriot District play, trailing only Lake Braddock.  Woodson has three games this week - Lake Braddock, Fairfax and West Springfield.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse (GLAX)

The GLAX team travelled to Westfield High and scored a big win with many seeing significant action in a 19-6 win.  The Cavs followed that up with a nail-biter loss, 10-11 at the hands of the Robinson Rams.

On to a big test at Langley this week and playing at Fairfax High uner the Friday Night Lights.

Varsity Girls Soccer

On Monday, May 17, the team travelled to South County to take on the undefeated Stallions.  The Stallions took the lead 4 minutes into the game, then the defense and keeper Brigid Donohoe kept the score 1 – 0 at halftime.  The 2nd half was evenly matched until the Stallions exploded for 3 goals in a 5-minute span. The end result was a 4 – 0 loss for the Lady Cavaliers.

On May 19, the team faced the Fairfax Lions. Keeper Bevin Surbey and fellow Lady Cavaliers Lena Hasan, Allison WilliamsZoe D’Amato, Avery Burton, Kate Herz and Lady Baumann Nedeff all contributed to the tie score at the end of regulation. In the first extra period, the Lions failed to score on a direct kick just outside the penalty box. But less than a minute later, they scored a controversial goal, with a shot that hit the left post and bounced out, but the assistant referee ruled it a goal.  The game ended as a disappointing 2 – 1 loss.

The Lady Cavs hosted Lake Braddock on May 21, and were in a 4 goal deficit early in the second half but then stormed back. Lady Baumann Nedeff came up the right side of the field and made a perfect cross to Sabina Niedrick to get the Cavaliers on the scoreboard.  With 7 minutes left in the game, Corrinne Cullina’s corner kick found Sabina Niedrick in front of the net and she scored to make it 4 – 2 Bruins.  Three minutes later, Lady Baumann Nedeff took a pass from Maia Lash in stride and streaked down the right side of the field and found Leah Meyer who put it to the back of the net to make it 4 - 3 Bruins.  The Lady Cavs just missed a goal via header at the end of the game and fell to the Bruins by a 4 – 3 score.  The team finishes up the regular season this week, first at home vs West Springfield on Tuesday, May 25, and then on the road at Robinson on Thursday, May 27.  Both games start at 7:15 pm.

Varsity Softball

The Woodson Varsity Softball Team began the week with a decisive victory over Fairfax 5-1.

Woodson was led by Freshman pitcher Claire Warden who tossed a complete game allowing only 1 run and striking out 5.

Defensively, Sophomore shortstop Sarah Banker was responsible for 5 plays including a nifty line drive double play ball doubling off the runner at third.  Freshman Sedona Adams playing third base also had a busy game with 4 assists. And Freshman second baseman Sydney Huffman was credited with 5 assists for outs at second and made a diving shoestring catch to end the game.

Offensively, the Cavaliers were led by Sophomore catcher Elizabeth Schneider who had 2 hits, a walk, and a RBI.  Sarah Banker and Sedona Adams each had 2 hits and a RBI.  Senior Jennah Walcott added an RBI double.

The end of the week brought a loss at home to reigning state champion, South County.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Varsity Softball Team hits the road this week for games Monday at Fairfax, Tuesday at Lake Braddock, and Friday at West Springfield.

Varsity Boys Tennis

Regional Playoffs are underway. The WTW Boys had a bye in the first round of the team tournament last week, and played Hayfield in the 2nd round at Woodson on Monday.

Vincent Truong and Ansh Pathapadu earned first round byes in the singles tournament. They will play their 2nd round matches today (Tuesday) at 3:30 at Fairfax HS. Vincent and Ansh also earned a bye in the first round of the doubles tournament and will compete in the 2nd round today following their singles matches.

The rest of the week is dependent on wins, but if the boys advance the schedule is follows:

Wednesday, 5/26: Regional Team Semifinal Match vs West Springfield or South County (@Woodson) 4:00

Thursday, 5/27: Semifinals singles & doubles (@Fairfax) 3:30/5:00

Friday, 5/28: Regional Team Championship Match (TBD) 4:00

Grading Information - Deadline June 1st

Earlier this school year, FCPS adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students finish the school year strongly. One of the key changes for high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade (A through D) in select courses.

As communicated by FCPS earlier this week, the deadline to make this request has been extended to allow students and families more time to gain information about fourth quarter progress before making a final decision. Underclass students now have until next Tuesday, June 1st, to designate a final mark for up to two of their current courses as Pass instead of a final letter grade "A" through "D". To submit a request, please use this form.

Please note that grade changes will be automatically applied after the year end grading process has closed, so there may be a delay between the end of the year and when the grade is actually changed to a P. Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

Textbook/Library Book Returns

Please return textbooks that are no longer needed for this school year.

If you are an in-person student, please return your textbooks beginning Tuesday, May 11th to the labeled carts in the hallways.

If you are a virtual student, please return your textbooks to the cart outside of door 1.

Medication Pickup by June 10th

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than dismissal time on Friday, June 10th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, however, with parent or guardian written permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the health room.

If you have any questions, please contact the School Health Aide Christina Lugo at 703-503-4610/cmlugo@fcps.edu or the Public Health Nurse Kate Boyd at 703-503-4691.
