News & Notes

2021 – 2022 Bell Schedule Returns to Pre-Pandemic Times

Next year’s bell schedules for all schools have been released, and Lane will be returning to our pre-pandemic schedule. The morning bell will ring at 9:20 a.m., and school will dismiss at 4:05 p.m.

2021 – 2022 Student Placement Input – Deadlines Next Friday, May 28th!

Small Virtual Learning Program

The deadline to apply for next year’s limited Virtual Program is next Friday, May 28th. Eligibility will be determined based on a health/medical certification of need completed by a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, psychiatrist, or a licensed clinical psychologist. If your child meets the criteria for the Virtual Program, there is no guarantee he/she will be assigned a teacher from our school. Virtual Program teachers will be determined based on enrollment and will be from across the school division. Course and program availability in the Virtual Program will depend on enrollment and staffing, as is the case for in-person instruction each year.

Also, some specialized programs will not be available to Virtual Program students. The FCPS Virtual Program webpage has more information on courses that will not be offered virtually. You can start the application process here.

In-Person Student Classroom Placement Input

We welcome feedback from parents to help with in-person student placement for next year. You have the best overall knowledge of your child and his/her unique traits. The class-placement process is approached very carefully and thoroughly. In order to provide the best environment for students, we seek input from both staff and parents.

Please share your thoughts on the needs of your child by answering the questions on this form by next Friday, May 28th.

When completing the form, please follow these guidelines:

  • Share the qualities of a teacher and classroom environment that would best meet your child’s needs.
  • Let us know if you feel that your child should be separated from another student. We will take that request into consideration. Please remember that best friends do not necessarily belong in the same instructional group.
  • PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST A TEACHER BY NAME OR GENDER. Additionally, please do NOT include negative information about past teachers, as the teachers read these forms when assisting with class assignments. If you do include such information, please know it will be deleted.

Important End-of-Year Foodservice Update – Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches to Replace Eggs and Yogurt!

Please note that as the year winds down, the protein lunches provided to students by our school cafeteria will change. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will replace eggs and yogurt. We will be sending the cafeteria staff our list of students with food allergies, but if your child does suffer from a peanut allergy (or other related allergy), please let him or her know about the change and remind him or her to be aware when going through the foodservice line.

library reminders

News from the Lane Library

As the library prepares for the end of the school year, please note the following dates:

  • Monday, May 24th: Reminder notices for all checked-out items (whether overdue or not) will be emailed to families.
  • Thursday, May 27th: Last day of circulation for all students. All books are due by this date.

There are still some outstanding library books from last school year (2019 – 2020). Mrs. Chozick would love to get them back, if at all possible! Books can be returned via any of these three ways:

  1. To the bin at Door #1 at any time (virtual students);
  2. When students come in for SOL testing (virtual students); or
  3. To the classroom (in-person students)

Please let Mrs. Chozick know if you have any questions.

End-of-Year Medication Reminders from the School Health Room

The school health room would like to remind parents and guardians about these important policies related to medication on file.

medication
  • All medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.
  • It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.
  • Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your physician.
  • Over-the-counter medication given for headache, muscle pain, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps and antibiotic or anti-viral medication do not need a physician signature. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form.
  • Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. All prescription medication, including physician’s samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or physician. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time interval for administration.
  • If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication. If you have any questions, please contact our school health room aide, Ms. Jovanna Velez, at 703-924-7710, or our school public health nurse, Ms. Laura Lux, at 703-704-6093.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a good summer.

Are You Moving Next Year? If So, Please Let Us Know!

We are still collecting responses on our Student Intention Form for the 2021 – 2022 school year. In order to determine how many classroom teachers we will need, we would like to know who is planning to return to Lane and who will be moving to a new area.

This form is not binding, but even preliminary information can be very helpful! We usually send home paper Student Intention Forms, but this year with so many students still learning at home, we have chosen to use a Google form instead. Thank you!

Rec-PAC Is Back This Summer!

Rec-PAC is a six-week, structured recreation program operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority for elementary school children. Participants enjoy activities such as fitness, indoor and outdoor games, team sports, nature, crafts, special events, talent shows and play sessions. Weekly activities incorporate character-building activities. A ratio of at least one staff person to 18 participants is standard. Enthusiastic leaders include college students and school teachers who bring a variety of skills. The program will run from June 28th to August 5th with a different fun theme every week! You can sign up for all six weeks or just the pick individual weeks that sound the most intriguing. All Rec-PAC locations will provide breakfast and lunch FREE for all campers.

Registration is open now through June 18th. Partial scholarships are available, making the cost as low as $12 per child, per week.

Please note that all Rec-PAC sites will adhere to COVID safety protocols and sites will be capped at the number of campers they can accept.

For more details and registration info, check out the online brochure at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/sites/parks/files/assets/documents/camps/rec-pac/2021-recpac-brochure.pdf.

Are you searching for peer support, advice, encouragement, and resources? This webinar will offer families opportunities to learn from each other as they grow in their parenting skills. Discussion highlights:

  • Parent to parent connection
  • Self-care for kids
  • Navigating decisions and establishing stability in uncertainty (or maybe “sanity” is a better word than stability!)
  • Making plans and creating family fun in the unknown

Join Mary Elizabeth Fleming, Fairfax County Department of Family Services, and FCPS Parent Resource Center Staff for this important webinar.
