Message From the Principal

Well, we are one week closer to saying, “That’s it!”  What an incredible run.  I have to say that this has been one heck of a journey and while it has been challenging on so many fronts, I have to say that if I had to do it again, … I wouldn’t!  But to have gone through it with you has made it much easier than it could have been.  Thank you for what you have brought to each day.

We had a successful week of first round SOL testing.  Students continued to show their resilience and grit.  They did everything we asked them to and took care of business.  We even had some students trying to come test who didn’t have a test.  That is commitment if I ever experienced it.  This week we will be taking care of the retakes.

And to make it all happen, it has the work of our fabulous teaching staff who have found a way through all the twists, turns, and “one more thing pleases” I have thrown at them. Please take a moment to share your thanks there, if you have a moment.

This week is a big week of Senior Nights in the athletic arena.  I look forward to seeing each of our senior parents.  Thank you in advance for sharing them with us.  They have made us better in so many ways.

I would like to take a moment to celebrate the efforts of one of our own in the area of passion for this student.  I would like to congratulate Ms. Kathryn Hopkins for being selected as South County’s Student Journalist of the Year in recognition of her outstanding work in the classroom and through scholastic publications.  This is a Virginia High School League award that Kathryn should be extremely proud of!

The county has published the bell schedule for the upcoming year… (I just wanna get out of this year first!)  Our bell schedule will mirror our schedule from last school year when students began the day at 8:10am and will complete their final class of the day at 2:55pm.

For those parents of our Seniors, I would like to share a tidbit of information about the Jiffy Lube Live graduation related to the venue.

We ask all those attending the ceremony familiarize themselves with the requirements and best practices below. While you may be familiar with the venue, our policies have changed to better fit the Fourth Amended Executive Order 72. Please refer any questions you may have to our school’s graduation coordinator.

  • Masks are recommended for all guests who are not vaccinated or are immune compromised.
  • Weapons are not allowed at Live Nation Entertainment Venues. This includes all off-duty Law Enforcement Officers.
  • All persons entering the building are subject to search using walkthrough magnetometers, handheld magnetometers, and/or physical pat down search.
  • All bags will be searched prior to entry. Bags larger than 12” x 6” x 12” will not be permitted. All bags larger than 4.5” x 6.5” must be clear. Camera bags will not be permitted.
  • Food and Drink other than water will not be permitted or available during the event.
  • Use of laser pointers, air horns, or other noise making devices is not permitted.
  • No signage/posters of any kind will be allowed into the venue.
  • Guests, Graduates, and Faculty will need to leave the premises promptly upon the completion of the ceremony.

And one bonus note: Each graduate will now receive six (6) tickets for their family and friends!

Well that is all that I have at this time.  I will never stop sharing just how much I appreciate your support throughout my time here.  You have been an outstanding parent community and even in those instances where there has been disagreement, I know that the passion for your children is the catalyst  that is required for our students to be successful and for that I am appreciative of you.  #OneStallion

Credit Recovery

Credit Recovery is an opportunity for students to recover two high-school course credits. Students may take one course per session. Students should contact their school’s summer program administrator for additional information. Students are eligible to enroll in a credit recovery course if they receive a grade of NM at the end of the school year. Credit Recovery is only for students who failed a course. New Course options are detailed on page 2. This is free of cost and transportation is provided to students that need it. Since the sessions are only three weeks long, it is essential that students are available for the entirety of the session. Information for all summer learning opportunities can be found here: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/summer-learning

Testing Corner

Advanced Placement Testers and their Families

If you are taking an AP exam this week, you will automatically be marked TST (Testing) in SIS for the day of your exam. Your parent does NOT need to call Attendance to excuse you – you are already excused for the day.

SOL Make-Ups

If your student was absent from their SOL test this past week, you should be receiving an email in the next few days regarding make-up SOL exams. If you have any questions regarding SOL make-ups, please contact Mr. Bird at cwbird@fcps.edu.

If you still owe for Senior dues, class fees in Myschoolbucks, outstanding obligations or any prior year textbooks you will need to pay in-person to the Finance Office on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9:00am – 2:00pm.  All payments MUST be made in cash or money order.  You can no longer pay via credit card or check.  All debts must be cleared or it will impact the students from receiving their cap and gowns at graduation rehearsal.  We will have a list of students with outstanding obligations posted on the Senior page.  This list will only show the students ID number, it will not contain any details or personal information.  Please check to verify that you are cleared.

For planning purposes, we will begin Senior collection of laptops and current year textbooks on June 1 – June 4 (time TBD). If these items are not returned on time they will convert to a debt and will also impact them from receiving their cap and gown during Graduation rehearsal on June 4th.

Pre-sale Online Ticketing for Spring Sports

This spring will be our very first season of using a brand new interface for purchasing tickets for South County sporting events (Softball, Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer and Track), ETix. ETix will allow our fans to purchase tickets online, prior to any game, match, or meet hosted at South County High School. To purchase tickets in advance, use this link to select the event for which you want tickets, then use your credit card information to purchase the number of tickets you want. You will receive a confirmation email for your purchase, and you will pull up that email on your phone to present to the ticket booth, scanning your ticket. This same procedure will also be used for those who wish to make credit card purchases for tickets at the gate on the day of the event.

If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Terri Smith at tasmith1@fcps.edu.

If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to email me any time!

Yearbook Distribution

Yearbooks will be distributed on July 12 in the school cafeteria. Due to COVID, deadlines were pushed back this year in order to cover as much of the school year as possible. Additionally, concurrent schooling makes a traditional distribution not possible. As a result, the distribution will take place over the summer.

On July 12 students can come to the school cafeteria to pick up books they have pre-ordered,  or they can buy a book if they have not pre-ordered one ($85 cash, as supplies last).

Seniors will get to come first at 10 a.m., followed by any underclassmen at 11 a.m.  Depending on COVID restrictions and weather, students may be allowed to socially distance and sign each other’s yearbooks as well.  If you ordered a yearbook and are out of town, there will be additional days to pick up the book after July 12.  If you have not ordered your book yet, you can do so at www.yearbookforever.com.  The only way to guarantee that you get a book is to pre-order, so don’t wait.  Supplies are limited. Books currently cost $75; if you plan to buy a book at distribution they cost $85 cash only.

Questions can be directed to Jennifer Delinski at jldelinski@fcps.edu

Thank you in advance for supporting the Entrepreneurship & Marketing program as well as the Work and Transition program here at South County.
