Schoology Parent Survey #19

cicada

A message from Principal, Amy Miller:

Dear Kilmer Families,

With the quick transition from cold to very warm days, we have also welcomed the cicadas to Kilmer MS! Many classes are taking outdoor breaks and going cicada hunting. It is fun to see and hear our in-person and virtual students share their cicada experiences with each other.

We have successfully completed the Reading and Science SOLs. This upcoming week, we will be administering the Math SOLs. We will be following the modified SOL bell schedule on Wednesday, May 26 which is detailed below.

We were fortunate to participate in the Schoology Pilot this school year. Schoology will be implemented throughout FCPS next school year. The feedback from our families and students will support this implementation. Below is information for the parent survey and students will have an opportunity to complete a feedback survey during PAWS Advisory.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

End of Year Grading Flexibility

On May 5, additional information was sent via a Kilmer enotify regarding the 2020-2021 End of Year Grading Flexibility for Middle School Students. As shared in an email from the Superintendent’s Office, FCPS has adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students achieve a strong finish to the school year. Third quarter report cards and the Pass - No Mark Status Form are available in ParentVue and were also mailed home to all families last week. Should you wish to designate one or more courses as Pass status for anticipated grades of “A” through “C-”, the Pass-No Mark Status Form must be submitted to your school counselor/Student Services by June 1, 2021. Access the Pass-No Mark Status Form here: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/se358.pdf

FCPS is adjusting the grading policy for the 2020-21 school year, to ensure students are not penalized by the challenges brought on by pandemic learning. Additional information including considerations and frequently asked questions are available at the following link: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary

Option to Expunge High School Credit Courses taken in MIddle School

An additional option is available for high school credit bearing classes taken in middle school. High school credit-bearing courses will be reflected on the middle and high school transcripts. In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. Parents must make this request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course. The request to expunge as well as guidelines and the procedures for expunging grades for high school courses taken in middle school can be found at the following link: https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/is104.pdf

Any student receiving a C or below in a high school credit course (Algebra 1, Geometry, or a World Language) should consider expunging and retaking the course next school year. Even though students will automatically receive a Pass or No Mark Status in place of a D or F, a student should still expunge the course. Please submit the Request to Expunge High School Courses in Middle School form to your student’s school counselor before the end of the school year.

SOL Testing

SOL Testing is drawing to a close.  Virtual students participating in testing will take their Math SOLs on Monday, May 24, and In person students participating in testing will take their Math SOLs on Wednesday, May 26.  On Wednesday, May 26th all students (virtual and in person) will follow the modified bell schedule.

Make up testing will take place from June 1-4 for students who missed one or more of their SOLs.  Those families will be contacted directly with scheduling information.

We have been notified by the FCPS Office of Assessment and Reporting that this year SOL scores will be communicated to families through ParentVue.  As soon as we have details that scores have been made available, we will send information to families explaining how to access your student’s scores.

Schoology Parent Survey

Thank you for participating in our Schoology pilot year. We would like you to take a short survey about your experience. Your answers will help us make any necessary improvements as we prepare all FCPS schools to begin using Schoology in the 2021-22 school year. The survey will take between 5-10 minutes to complete.

Please complete the survey by Friday, May 28.

Laptop Returns

As we approach the end of this school year, we are finalizing plans to collect FCPS provided laptops to prepare them for next school year.

All FCPS laptops and power chargers need to be returned to Kilmer Middle School at the end of the school year.  We are not collecting laptop sleeves.

For In-person students, we will collect laptops during the last day of school, June 11th.

For Virtual student and in-person students who are not in school on June 11th, we will collect on these dates:

  •       June 11, 1pm - 4pm
  •       June 14, 8am -12pm

In preparation for the return of laptops, all personal stickers must be removed.

If your student is participating in an FCPS summer program, your students will keep the laptop until the end of the program.

If the laptop charger is lost, you will need to purchase a replacement charger via MySchoolBucks.  The cost of a replacement laptop charger is $23.

  1.         Go to MySchoolBucks
  2.         Click on the Store
  3.         Look for the Laptop Charger Replacement
  4.         Click on that icon and make sure that it has the correct student listed
  5.         Purchase the replacement

If this amount is a financial burden to your family, please contact your student’s counselor.

Please contact Debra David at dsdavid@fcps.edu if you have any questions about laptop return.
