Library image

Hello from the Longfellow Library!

As we are getting closer to the end of the school year, the Library is looking for all the books that our students have borrowed. All books should be returned to the school by May 28th. We can accept elementary books from last year as well. Virtual Students who didn’t return their books during Monday SOL test days can return their library books when they return their laptops to the school in June.

Overdue notices went out Friday, May 21st. If your student has a question about overdue books from their elementary school, please contact the elementary librarian for assistance.

Summer Reading projects are coming up soon. All rising 6th and 7th graders are expected to read at least one book over the summer. Rising 9th graders attending McLean HS are expected to read and annotate at least one dystopian novel over the summer. More information about summer reading requirements are located on the Summer Reading page of the library website, including a list of recommended dystopian novels for rising McLean students. Going to a different school? Check out their website for summer reading requirements.

All students will have access to Longfellow’s digital books throughout the summer using the MackinVIA digital book platform. Rising 9th graders will receive access to their high school’s MackinVIA on July 1st.

SOLs

This week we are completing our final week of SOL testing. We know that students have worked hard all year and that this assessment is only one measure of their learning. Teachers will be sharing test scores with students; the scores will be available in Parent/StudentVUE as an ungraded assignment. The SOL score has no impact on students’ grades, posting the scores in Parent/StudentVUE is done strictly for communication purposes. If you have a question about SOL makeup, please contact Mary Reid at MReid@fcps.edu.

P2 Preview - End-of-Year Culminating Lesson

Our FINAL P2 lesson/activity will take place on Wednesday, June 2nd during Lancer Time (4th Period). We will reflect on this historic year and all that we have learned during our weekly P2 lessons. The P2 Committee has planned a culminating review activity of all 24 character strengths and we will celebrate our growth. We look forward to the end of the school year and taking time to regroup and recharge for the following school year!

Yearbooks Have Arrived!

Yearbooks will be distributed to In-Person students during Period 4 on June 2nd and 4th.

Virtual students may come pick up their yearbook when they drop off their laptop on June 7th. After completing the drop off at Door 2, head over to the other side of the building to room 138 to pick up your yearbook!

If you are unable to come in that day, please email Mary Reid (mreid@fcps.edu) and make arrangements to pick up your pre-purchased yearbook from the Front Office at a later date.

If you did not get a chance to purchase one online, we will have a limited number for sale starting June 7th. Please bring $40 cash or check made out to Longfellow Middle School and come by room 138 on Monday, June 7, or have your in-person student stop by 138 during the school day to purchase one.

Thank you to everyone in the Longfellow community for supporting our yearbook this year with family pictures – we could not have had a yearbook without all of you!

Credit Recovery for High School Credit Classes

FCPS offers summer instruction to provide credit recovery in high school credit classes.
Click here to learn about the FCPS Summer Credit Recovery options. Please contact your student’s Longfellow counselor with any questions.

Pass and No Mark Grade Option- Deadline Extended to June 1

Earlier this school year, FCPS adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students with a strong finish to the school year. One of the key changes for middle and high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade in select courses. We understand that families would like additional time to consider this option. The new deadline to submit a Pass-No Mark Form is June 1.

Students and families are encouraged to carefully consider the option for Pass. For students in grade 7 who plan to apply to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in grade 8 for admission in SY 22-23, it is recommended that they do not exercise the option to replace grades above D+ with a Pass(P) in your core classes (English, science, mathematics, social studies, and World Language (if for high school credit)).

Click here for additional information including the Pass-No Mark form (translated in several languages), considerations, and frequently asked questions. Completed forms should be emailed directly to your student’s Longfellow counselor.

Expunging High School Credit Courses

In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. At Longfellow, high school credit classes include: Algebra 1 and above and World Language classes (except part A classes). Parents must make this request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course. Click here to download the Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form. The second page of the form contains important information about the implications of expunging courses. Completed forms should be emailed directly to your student’s Longfellow counselor.

Plans for Implementing Five Days in Fall

We are looking forward to in-person instruction as the primary mode of learning for all FCPS students during the 2021-22 school year. Virtual learning options will be very limited and will be the exception.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has made it a legal requirement for all school divisions to offer five days of in-person instruction for all students in the fall via Senate Bill 1303. FCPS is planning for a successful transition in the fall: addressing transportation and lunch; ordering tents; conducting screening and diagnostic testing pilots; creating master schedules; minimizing concurrent learning opportunities. There is much work to do, but we want to make our families aware of our plans as we start to prepare for the 21-22 school year.
