Good afternoon, Lane parents and guardians!
The Virginia Department of Education is making changes to social studies standards for teaching African American history, and FCPS will be changing its practices as well.
The organizers of the FCPS Summer Social Studies Institute for educators are looking for FCPS parents/caregivers who would be interested in participating in a panel discussion breakout session moderated by an FCPS social studies specialist to help update teachers on the changes. The session will be held on Tuesday, June 22nd in the afternoon (exact time TBD). Parents/caregivers would be sharing their personal responses to the following questions.
- What are your hopes for your child learning about Black history?
- What are some ways teachers can honor your child's identity or developmental level when teaching about Black history?
- Sometimes learning about U.S. history means learning about violence, injustice, and oppression. What are your hopes for how teachers can support your child when learning about these events and issues?
- What might teachers and school leaders consider when communicating with families about social studies instruction and/or specific topics and themes in the social studies curriculum?
If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Lane's parent liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, at macrosby@fcps.edu for more information by this Friday, May 21st. Parents from all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to respond.
