May 24 SOL Make-up Day
May 31 Memorial Day Holiday - No School
|
Good evening, Lanier family,
Last week, Ms. Teague did a great job filling in for me and writing our weekly letter. I was busy working on a personal name change (couldn’t let LMS changing to KJMS be the only thing happening this spring). I got married this past weekend and will soon be changing to my new name of Tammy Silipigni. This will be great fun for middle school students to try and pronounce. Hint: the “g” is silent, thankfully. So, I will not be Dr. Silly-pig, but Dr. Sil-a-peen-ee. No worries, the conversion will happen over the summer!
This past week, our PTA had elections. We wanted to thank our outgoing officers for all they have done this year. Please pass on thanks to these amazing volunteers:
President: Jenn Wright
Vice-President: Rachel Perry
Secretary: Missy Gallihugh (New President)
Treasurer: Heather Rickman
Congratulations to our new PTA officers: Missy Gallihugh is our new President and Monika Kluczyk as our new Secretary! We so look forward to your leadership and know you will do awesome things for KJMS.
We continue to search for a Vice President of Membership and Treasurer. Heather Rickman will continue as acting Treasurer through the audit June 30th. If a Treasurer cannot be found by the beginning of the next school year the PTA will become INACTIVE. Please contact lanierptapresident@gmail.com if you have interest in either position.
The PTA also had guests speakers Principal Erin Lenart and Assistant Principal Laura Rotella from Fairfax high school with us share about matriculation of 8th graders. If you want to hear more about what is in store for 8th graders next year, please listen.

For the remaining Mondays of school, your child does NOT need to check-in with the TA teacher. We will be busy with SOL make-up testing, Memorial Day, and then an 8th grade event on the remaining Mondays. Thank you for your support with all of these events.
Stay safe,
Tammy Hanna

Summer Camp Programs
Emergency Broadband Benefit Available for Families
The Federal Communications Commission has launched a temporary program to help families and households struggling to afford Internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Emergency Broadband Benefit provides a discount of up to $50 per month toward broadband service for eligible households. Eligible families can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. This is not an FCPS-funded program. It is a way for families to potentially access a more reliable hard-wired internet connection at a higher bandwidth than the “basic” packages provide.
Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail in application.
Learn about the benefit, including eligibility and enrollment information, by visiting www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit, or by calling 833-511-0311.
Summer Practice Books
Summer Practice Books will be mailed home to FCPS students to provide suggested activities for students to support continued learning. Families who have opted-out of paper mailings from the division will only receive digital copies of the Summer Practice Books. Books will be mailed home to families in early June to arrive before the last day of school, June 11, 2021. Families will receive email communication in May about upcoming book arrival. Digital versions of books will be emailed to the enrolling parent SIS account in PDF format the week of June 7, 2021.
- Pre-Kindergarten students will receive one interdisciplinary Summer Practice Book.
- Students enrolled in grades K-8 in 2020-21 will receive one Language Arts Practice Book and one Math Practice Book by course enrollment. These books will also include information and guidance about digital tools that can be accessed by students and families to support learning throughout the summer.
- English Learners and Special Education students may receive additional or customized books.
More information can be accessed on the Summer Practice Books public webpage.

Five Days in the Fall
FCPS is returning strong for five days a week of in-person learning in the fall. Five days of in-person learning is guaranteed by a new state law that instructs all public schools to provide five days of in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year. Our dedicated teachers have missed their students and are very excited to be back together in the fall, continuing our exception, nationally-recognized education programs.

Attendance Items
- Please remember to inform the school if your student is going to be virtual on an in-person day. It is important that we know why they are learning from home so their attendance can be noted correctly. Please use the attendance form or call the attendance line at 703-934-2424.
- If a student needs to miss any class time at all, be it one period or a full day, parents or guardians should always report the specific details of the absence to the LMS attendance line or form.
- Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is important that parents notify the school in addition to the teacher so your child's attendance record is marked correctly.
