NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Hello Woodson Families!

This week we received good news that the spread of COVID is decreasing and vaccinations are increasing which means we are closer to achieving herd immunity. Given where we were last year at this time, I’m excited to see such progress.

Even with this good news, we must remember to be vigilant. We continue to require masks indoors while at school and continue to maintain the social distancing. This is in place until Tuesday, June 15th at which time we will adjust to the new requirements. Please see the Updated Mask Guidance story below.

Thank you to everyone who has supported, shown up for and contributed to the senior events. This is a unique year and we have had to be creative in our approaches, especially as guidance around distancing, masks and food has changed rapidly and often.

I am excited to begin planning for students to come in person next school year. Stay tuned for more information as we plan in-person school tours for new students and Cav Kickoff which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 19th. More information to come on all of this!

Have a wonderful summer – like weekend!

Stay safe, stay well, and stay connected Cavs,

Dr. Floyd

2. Laptop Return Days

We are required to collect each student’s FCPS-assigned laptop and charger by the end of this school year.  We will reimage each laptop this summer and students will receive a laptop back in the fall.  Underclassmen will need to tape their name to the top of the laptop if their name card has been removed.

Guidelines for the collection of laptops:

  • All SENIORS and/or students leaving Woodson must complete the following steps before turning in their laptops.  ALL local files, bookmarks, and programs will be erased.
  • All Students Returning to Woodson must complete the following steps before turning in their laptops. All local files and bookmarks must be backed up or they will be erased.
  • Laptops must be returned free of stickers, markings and other drawings, or the student will be charged a $50.00 cleaning fee.
  • Students should turn in their laptop and charging cord.  Students should keep their case, we will not collect cases from students.
  • If a student lost their laptop or their laptop cord, they should visit the Woodson Technology site and scroll down to the Property Damage or Loss section.  Payments will be made through MySchoolBucks.  Students should bring a paper receipt from MySchoolBucks with them when they come to laptop collection.

Our Minds Matter

NBC Today aired a segment featuring "Our Minds Matter" clubs in high schools which talk about mental health for teens. Woodson's school-wide kindness week sponsored by the OMM club is shown in this segment.

3. Updated Mask Guidance

School policy regarding masks remains unchanged. For the remainder of the FY 2020-2021 school year, FCPS will be requiring students and staff to continue to wear masks and socially distance both indoors and outdoors on school grounds.  While inside on school property, students, teachers, staff, and visitors must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status.

This is consistent with CDC guidelines which state that schools should continue with all current mitigation strategies through the end of the school year despite updated guidance for fully vaccinated people. FCPS will maintain CDC requirements of 3 feet social distance in classrooms and 6 feet social distancing in our cafeterias through June 15.

Athletic and School Performances - May 15- May 27, 2021

Indoors - Masks are required; Social distancing is 3 feet student-to-student, 6 feet between spectators who are not family members.

Outdoors - Masks are NOT required but recommended for unvaccinated; Social distancing is 3 feet student-to-student, 6 feet between spectators who are not family members.

Events effective May 28, 2021

  • High School Athletics
  • School Performances including promotion/award ceremonies/drama performances (both during school hours and after school hours)
  • Graduations (FCPS will be streaming all graduation ceremonies)
  • All Night Grad Parties, Prom, and other gatherings (PTA, PTO, PTSA events)

Indoors - Masks required; no social distancing requirement

Outdoors - Masks NOT required; no social distancing requirement

School bus - Masks required; no social distancing requirement

4. Medication Pickup

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than dismissal time on Friday, June 10th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded.

It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian, however, with parent or guardian written permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the health room.

Thank you for your understanding in this situation as we support another FCPS school.

15. Grading Information - New Deadlines

Earlier this school year, FCPS adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students finish the school year strongly. One of the key changes for high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade (A through D) in select courses.

As communicated by FCPS earlier this week, the deadline to make this request has been extended to allow students and families more time to gain information about fourth quarter progress before making a final decision. Underclass students now have until Tuesday, June 1st to designate a final mark for up to two of their current courses as Pass instead of a final letter grade "A" through "D". To submit a request, please use this form.

Please note that grade changes will be automatically applied after the year end grading process has closed, so there may be a delay between the end of the year and when the grade is actually changed to a P. Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

16. Summer Credit Recovery

If your child fails a core course and earns a no-mark (NM) this year, there are summer opportunities to recover these credits.

17. Immunization Requirements for Rising Seniors

The Code of Virginia requires all students to be immunized against certain communicable diseases prior to entrance into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Effective July 1, 2021 all students entering twelfth grade will be required to receive one dose of Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) administered at age 16 or older, and prior to the beginning of school.

Twelfth grade students cannot begin school in August without proper Meningococcal documentation.

Please provide one of the following documents to Woodson Registrar, Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu as soon as possible:

  1. An updated immunization record showing that the student has received the Meningococcal vaccine.
  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  4. A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online

Immunizations are available from your student's healthcare provider or the Fairfax County Health Department. The Health Department clinic locations and hours are available online at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health/immunization/school or by calling 703-246-2411.

Please contact Woodson Registrar, Casey Delaney at cdelaney@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

18. Sports Physical Night

Registration is open for Woodson's annual Sports Physical Night on Wednesday, June 16th! Register HERE!

As always, the goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a VHSL physical valid for the entirety of the 2021-22 School Year.

Each year it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. Price will be $50 as in previous years.

Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser for the year and ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Appointment times will be available at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm.

Want to Volunteer??

If you would like to volunteer please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu. As of now, we are still looking for a few more physicians and HCPs to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. If not, and you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

21. Parent Technology Help Desk

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.
