From the Library
- As the end of the school year approaches, please note the following due dates for library materials:
- Seniors who still have library materials out should plan to return them during this week’s Senior Dropoff Days.
- underclassmen library items are due by May 28, or they may return them when they return their laptops.
- There are no fines charged for overdue items. If your student would like to know the replacement cost for lost or damaged items, please email us at hhs_library@fcps.edu.
- SUMMER CHECKOUTS: Students who are returning to Herndon HS in the fall may check out books to enjoy over the summer. Any books checked out for summer reading should be brought back when students return to school in August.
- Remember that you never have to return ebooks or e-audiobooks! Titles that students check out from their MackinVIA account will automatically drop off after 3 weeks. And MackinVIA is available year-round.
-
SYNC Audiobooks for Teens has started its twelfth summer of offering free audiobook downloads to students ages 13 and up. Each Thursday, SYNC introduces two thematically-paired titles that are available that week. Once downloaded, these books never disappear—they’re yours to enjoy at your leisure. The program runs through August 4. Click here for details about the exciting YA titles being offered this summer, and instructions on downloading to your device.
- Is your student looking for help with an assignment? Book recommendations? Students can meet virtually with a member of the library team every school day! Our virtual office hours on BBCU allow them to connect with us from 8:00 – 11:00 on Mondays, and before school, during Stingers and lunch, and after school on other school days.

Attention Seniors and any student leaving FCPS after June
Please follow these instructions to back up your Google Drive and school network files so you can take your work with you when you leave FCPS. The instructions can be accessed with an @fcpsschools.net account. Page 1 of the instructions shows you how to back up the files that are on your school laptop or your student network drive. Page 2 of the instructions shows you how to download your Google Drive to a personal device.
You will start by backing up any files stored on your device or your network drive to your Google Drive. If you are a virtual student and have files stored on the FCPS network drive, you will need to go to any FCPS school and restart your laptop while on the FCPS network. This can be accomplished from the parking lot, no need to enter the building. After you restart your device and while you are still on the FCPS network you can follow Page 1 to secure the back-up of files from your device and your network drive files to your Google Drive. If you are graduating or leaving FCPS you will then need to transfer your Google Drive to a personal device (external hard drive, USB/flash drive, etc.), which is on Page 2.

Summer 2021 Credit Recovery Program
This summer students will have the opportunity to recover two high school course credits during two credit recovery sessions. Each high school will offer credit recovery courses in a face-to-face setting.
Session 1: June 28 - July 16 (July 5th holiday)
Session 2: July 21 – Aug 6
Students can take one class each session to recover two credits total. Classes are in person at South Lakes HS from 8 AM – 1 PM. Parent or School Counselor will register their student for in person credit recovery through this link. Transportation will be provided, but exact pick up/drop off locations will not be decided until majority of students have registered. Free lunch will be served for all students. Attendance is critical to recover courses over summer. All students must attend every day.
Not all courses will be offered during both sessions. Please see specific course offerings for each session on the Herndon HS website here. Flyer available here. Questions? Contact your child’s school counselor or Summer School Principal Dr. Phil Cronin (pscronin@fcps.edu).

Attention Hornet Athletes!
Spring Physicals will take place on Monday, JUNE 7th at Herndon High School. They will be valid for all summer conditioning/workouts and all of school year 2021-22. Student-Athletes can NOT participate in any team events for next year without a valid physical (documented on the VHSL Pre-Participation Examination form) after May 1st.
Physical examinations may always be done with your primary care physicians, but this is our annual fundraiser. It gives you the opportunity to have your physical done and it helps fund all the supplies (bandages, gloves, gauze, ice bags, rehab equipment, etc.) the Athletic Training Staff needs to take care of our student-athletes. We have doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals from the community come in to perform physicals right at the high school- they volunteer their time so that we can raise the money we need to sustain our program.
Since the Athletic Training Program does not receive funds from the county to pay for these necessary supplies, we rely on this event to give us the money we need to do so. To encourage participation, we make it easy!
- Evening appointments so kids don't miss school and you don't miss work
- An easily accessible location right at the high school
- We also include musculoskeletal screenings that you probably will not see performed at a normal sports physical at your doctor’s office. We let you know any "problem" areas and offer a resource at the end to help target those areas to in turn prevent injuries down the road J
- And last but not least, friendly faces to guide you through the process!
For those new to high school athletics, State Licensed and Board Certified Athletic Trainers are employed by FCPS to help with the health and well-being of student-athletes. Our job includes prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. We keep extensive records on the medical history and status of all players and participate in continuing education annually to keep our knowledge and skills up to date with the most recent research. We are here to keep sports safe and save you the headache of heading to the doctor for all the minor things! We can do it all- from minor boo-boo's to broken bones, illnesses, internal injuries and even concussions- not only will we take care of your student-athlete, but we'll also serve as the liaison between you, the student, his/her teachers, coaches and any other medical professionals that may be involved to ensure a healthy recovery and a safe return to play. And if we can't- because it's out of our scope of practice or it needs further medical attention- we'll lead you in the right direction to make it as pain and hassle free for you as we can!
We promise that everything (assuming a healthy physical from the doctor- if they refer you on for something specific, that’s for your child’s safety and needs to be addressed) on your physical paperwork will be complete and ready to go- leaving just the easy school/team paperwork to be done before the first practice.
PLEASE come and support the cause! Physicals are $50 and by appointment only- please register for an appoint at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScRZewAVnQf8WoWHCZiaujn99bAmTyoIcj-AamV_xyuj8if1A/viewform?usp=sf_link
We are also accepting parent and/or medical volunteers- if you are interested in helping or have other questions about the event, please contact Lisa Petruzzi at LTPetruzzi@fcps.edu.
