Principal's Message
Parents and Guardians,
We will give the last of the SOL tests next week. Teachers and students worked incredibly hard to prepare for the exams. The scores may not be a full indication of that preparation with a year such as the one that we have had. We know the results of this pandemic year cannot be measured by these tests. Next week teachers will communicate to any student that has taken the test what the preliminary, uncertified score is. Official scores will be certified and communicated to families this summer.
Next year we look forward to a year of normal schooling and the opportunity to take away what should remain from this year’s instruction and bring back our tried lessons and plans that will benefit all students in their academic journey.
Please let me know if you have any questions concerning your child’s test or results.
Aimee Monticchio
Principal

Grading Policy Changes for Middle School
Key policy changes for middle school students are listed below:
- Students receiving a final mark of “D” or “D+” in any course will be assigned a mark of “P” (pass) as a final mark. This will be automatically applied for any course in which a student receives an “D” or “D+” as a final mark.
- Use of No Mark, “NM”, instead of “F” grades for final marks for all courses. This will be automatically applied for any course in which a student receives an “F” as a final mark. If this applies to a high school level course, the student will need to repeat that course.
- Allowing middle school students to select a mark of “P” (pass) for any courses for which a passing grade is earned for the final mark. As referenced above, for the 2020-21 school year, final marks of “F” will automatically receive a No Mark, “NM”, and final marks of “D” or “D+” will automatically receive a “P.” A mark of “P” does not carry a weight for the student’s GPA.
Expunging a high school course taken in Middle School
Middle school students who are taking a high school level course (Spanish 1 Part B, Spanish 1, Spanish 1 Immersion, Spanish 2, Spanish 2 Immersion, French 1 Part B, French 1, French 2, German, Japanese, Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, or Algebra 2) are eligible to expunge that course from their high school transcript. If you wish to expunge the course, please fill out this form and return it to Michele Beard, Director of Student Services, at mbeard@fcps.edu. Once expunged, this cannot be reversed. If expunged, the course should be repeated in order to progress to the next level course.

Attention South Lakes Athletes! SLHS is hosting Sports Physical Night.
Spring Physicals will take place on Tuesday, JUNE 8th at South Lakes High School. They will be valid for all summer conditioning/workouts and all of school year 2021-22. Student-Athletes can NOT participate in any team events for next year without a valid physical (documented on the VHSL Pre-Participation Examination form) after May 1st.
Physical examinations may always be done with your primary care physicians, but this is our annual fundraiser. It gives you the opportunity to have your physical done and it helps fund all the supplies (bandages, gloves, gauze, ice bags, rehab equipment, etc.) the Athletic Training Staff needs to take care of our student-athletes. We have doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals from the community come in to perform physicals right at the high school- they volunteer their time so that we can raise the money we need to sustain our program.
Since the Athletic Training Program does not receive funds from the county to pay for these necessary supplies, we rely on this event to give us the money we need to do so. To encourage participation, we make it easy!
- Evening appointments so kids don't miss school and you don't miss work
- An easily accessible location right at the high school
- We also include musculoskeletal screenings that you probably will not see performed at a normal sports physical at your doctor’s office. We let you know any "problem" areas and offer a resource at the end to help target those areas to in turn prevent injuries down the road.
- And last but not least, friendly faces to guide you through the process
For those new to high school athletics, State Licensed and Board-Certified Athletic Trainers are employed by FCPS to help with the health and well-being of student-athletes. Our job includes prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries. We keep extensive records on the medical history and status of all players and participate in continuing education annually to keep our knowledge and skills up to date with the most recent research. We are here to keep sports safe and save you the headache of heading to the doctor for all the minor things! We can do it all- from minor boo-boo's to broken bones, illnesses, internal injuries and even concussions- not only will we take care of your student-athlete, but we'll also serve as the liaison between you, the student, his/her teachers, coaches and any other medical professionals that may be involved to ensure a healthy recovery and a safe return to play. And if we can't- because it's out of our scope of practice or it needs further medical attention- we'll lead you in the right direction to make it as pain and hassle free for you as we can!
We promise that everything (assuming a healthy physical from the doctor- if they refer you on for something specific, that’s for your child’s safety and needs to be addressed) on your physical paperwork will be complete and ready to go- leaving just the easy school/team paperwork to be done before the first practice.
So PLEASE come and support the cause! Physicals are $50 and by appointment only- there are no guarantees a walk-in will be seen.

The Verizon Innovative Learning Young Men of Color Program
Verizon Innovative Learning provides free technology, access and innovative learning programs that transform the learning experience, and also provides the tools necessary for remote learning to enable students to develop the skills, knowledge, and capabilities they need. Verizon Innovative Learning is a key part of Verizon’s goal to help move the world forward for all as part of Citizen Verizon, our plan for economic, environmental, and social advancement.
The programs begin with a summer immersion experience and then meets monthly year-round. It partners the students with mentors and exposes them to the many career opportunities that STEM, technology, and entrepreneurship hold for their futures.
The mentorship activities provided in the program are based on self-empowerment. These activities are focused on exploring cultural differences, holistic development, social empowerment, and career exploration. College students provide mentorship for the program participants in STEM fields to speak to the students about career journeys.
Details:
- Students must be entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
- The camp will consist of a summer three-week (June 21 to July 9) intensive learning experience including courses in augmented and virtual reality, coding, 3D design, robotics, electronics, Artificial Intelligence, entrepreneurship, and design thinking principles.
- Following the summer, the students will participate in monthly sessions throughout the academic year where they will develop a technology solution for a community problem that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- There is no cost to attend this camp.
- The Verizon Innovative Learning Young Men of Color Program provides boys from under-resourced middle schools a supportive STEM-enrichment educational experience. The Young Men of Color Program is aligned with project-based learnings taken from real world challenges, and invites STEM exploration, career exploration, and personal development. We welcome the participation of any middle school student regardless of gender identity.
