Spring SOL Testing

Wednesday, May 19th - Algebra 1, Geometry SOL

If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coach, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.

Please note: Students who will be taking an SOL or digital AP exams this spring must run the FCPS Health Check (found on the desktop) on their FCPS issued laptops on the FCPS network to ensure they have the latest updated software. Students will need to access the FCPS network on school grounds. Students can do this after hours from outside any FCPS building.

To help facilitate this, please sign up for a Tech Support appointment using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Grading Information - New Deadline!

Earlier this school year, FCPS adopted a series of secondary grading policy changes to help our students finish the school year strongly. One of the key changes for high school students is to allow students to request a mark of “P” (pass) instead of a letter grade (A through D) in select courses.

As communicated by FCPS earlier this week, the deadline to make this request has been extended to allow students and families more time to gain information about fourth quarter progress before making a final decision. Underclass students now have until Tuesday, June 1st to designate a final mark for up to two of their current courses as Pass instead of a final letter grade "A" through "D". To submit a request, please use this form.

Please note that grade changes will be automatically applied after the year end grading process has closed, so there may be a delay between the end of the year and when the grade is actually changed to a P. Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

Attendance Updates

Early Checkouts from School

If your student is in-person and needs to check out during the day, send a note detailing the checkout.  The student should present that note to the Attendance Office upon arrival at school and will be given a pass to leave at the time indicated. For more information regarding attendance procedures, visit the Woodson Attendance Site.

Calls During AP and SOL Testing

During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools, morning attendance telephone calls, texts and emails to home will not occur through Friday, June 11th.

This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing locations (in-person or virtually) during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and emails will still remain in place.

Textbook/Library Book Returns

Please begin to return textbooks that are no longer needed for this school year.

If you are an in-person student, please return your textbooks beginning Tuesday, May 11th to the subject labeled carts in the hallways.

If you are a virtual student, please return your textbooks beginning Monday, May 10th to the cart outside of door 1.

WTW CAVS SPORTS RECAP

Cav Varsity Spring Updates

Varsity Baseball

Woodson’s Varsity Baseball team notched its second win of the season 9-7 over West Springfield on Wednesday evening. The game saw offensive fireworks from both teams, notably a five-run explosion by Cavaliers in the bottom of the 3rd. The teams traded runs over the final four frames and the Cavs held on for the victory.

Woodson loaded the bases in the 1st, with hits from Juniors Jay Sorkin, Brady Lencz, and Connor Krahulec. Seniors Anthony Meaders and Vincent Altieri drove in runs to stake the Cavs to an early 2-0 lead. West Springfield struck back in the 2nd, tying the game with 4 infield singles. The Spartans took the lead with another pair of runs in the 3rd.

The Cavaliers bats answered the call in the bottom half of the inning. Lencz and Krahulec drew walks. Singles by Altieri and Colton Lennon tied the game at 4. Freshman Ethan Conklin drove in 2 more with a line drive to right field. Junior Colin Jones hit a triple past a diving right fielder to plate Conklin and push the lead to 7-4.

West Springfield threatened in the 4th, loading the bases with two outs and scoring one unearned run. Cavs reliever Lars Greenlee got a key strikeout to end the rally. Woodson responded with an RBI double by Meaders in the bottom of the inning.

The Spartans strung together three hits in the 5th to close the gap to 8-6, but Woodson got out of trouble with a nice double play by Sorkin and Lencz. West Springfield pulled within a run in the 6th after a double and an error.

Woodson added an insurance run in the bottom half of the 6th after Lencz walked and Meaders hit his second RBI double of the evening. Catcher Tommy Stribling fielded a sacrifice bunt and nailed the lead runner with a strong throw to 3B. Shortstop Sorkin matched his effort by fielding a grounder and forcing the runner at 3B. A ground out to Lencz ended the game.

In the end, the Cavs walked away with a 9-7 victory in a game that could easily have gone the other way.

Buoyed by wins over Patriot District rivals South County and West Springfield, the Woodson Varsity faced off against the Robinson Rams in a road contest on Friday. The Cavaliers had their ace on the mound and the offense was hot, having scored 9 runs in consecutive games. Unfortunately, the Rams pitching was dominant in a 6-0 shutout.

Rams Senior Ryan Quinn took a no-hitter into the 7th inning, but Woodson Senior Anthony Meaders broke up it up with a sharp single to left. Meaders reached 3rd on two wild pitches, but the Cavs couldn’t push a run across. Quinn completed the one-hit shutout, striking out 5. Quinn walked 6 and hit a batter, but his defense turned three double plays to keep the Cavs in check.

Woodson got a strong outing from starting pitcher Brady Lencz, who struck out 7 over 5 innings. After allowing two early runs on consecutive doubles, Lencz kept Woodson in the game for the first five innings. The Rams added three unearned runs in the 6th inning off the Cavs bullpen.

Varsity Dance team

11th IN THE NATION!

Congratulations to our Woodson Precisionettes Dance Team who placed 11th in the Nation for Large Varsity Game Day with their Nationals routine! What is even more impressive is that their score went up FOUR POINTS from Semi to Finals, which is UNHEARD OF!

This team achieved amazing success in a challenging year with limited practice time. We are grateful to the coaching staff - Coach Krissy, Coach Emily, and Coach Becky. Under these coaches, our dancers learned and performed an incredible routine in a record period of time. Way to go Pnettes!

Varsity Girls Lacrosse (GLAX)

The team, families, coaches, and administration celebrated Senior night prior to a game versus Chantilly last Monday.  The team led the game from start to finish with many players contributing to the 17-2 win. It was a fitting send-off for our 12th graders who have committed a great deal of time and energy representing the Cavs these past four years.  The team ended the week with a game under the Friday night lights at West Springfield to take on the Spartans.  The game started out a bit tight, but the Cavs ultimately pulled away big in the second half to defeat the previously unbeaten Spartans.  The Cavs GLAX team remains undefeated in 2021.

Varsity Softball

The young Varsity Softball team had a busy week playing three games in five days - Monday against Oakton, Wednesday against Oakton and West Springfield, and Friday at Robinson. Despite great effort and enthusiasm, the Cavs dropped all 3 games.

Highlights included a home run by Freshman Claire Warden, and a RBI triple from Sophomore Sarah Banker versus Oakton.

Against Robinson, Woodson’s offensive attack was led by Sophomore SJ Schatzman, who had 2 RBIs on a hit and a walk with bases loaded.

The Varsity Softball team has home games this week on Tuesday versus Fairfax and Thursday against South County.  First pitch is 6:30.

Varsity Girls Soccer

On Tuesday, May 11, the Lady Cavaliers hosted the Robinson Rams.  It was senior night and the raucous crowd was out in earnest to support our seniors – tri-captains Kate Herz, Corrinne Cullina, and Makayla Mastal as well as Annalise Flynn, Audrey Fisher, Mackenzie Burgoyne, Lena Hasan, Maysia Mateos, Jacqueline Sherry, and Carolyn Clarke.  Family members joined the seniors on the field for pregame festivities, highlighted by favorite senior memories including a trip to Olive Garden and sharing the “taste of Italy” entrée, as well as team dinners.  Good times!  The teams battled back-and-forth with the Rams taking a 1 to 0 half time lead, scoring off of a corner kick.  Five minutes into the 2nd half, Avery Burton scored on a free kick from the 20-yard line that bounced off the tip of the goalie’s hands and then off the crossbar and into the goal.  Keeper Bevin Surbey stood tall in net and made a number of good saves to keep the score deadlocked at 1 a piece.  With 6 minutes left in the game, Sabina Niedrick ran down a long ball on the left side of the field and made a beautiful cross to MacKenzie Burgoyne who dented the back of the net with a hard finish to give the Lady Cavaliers the lead for good.  Smiles flourished from the seniors as they left the field with a 2 - 1 victory.

After the high from winning on Senior Night, two days later the Lady Cavaliers battled the Lions from Fairfax HS.  Despite possessing the ball for much of the first half, the Cavaliers found themselves down 2 -1 at halftime.  Corrinne Cullina scored directly off her corner kick, curving the ball in behind the Lions keeper for the lone goal.  Both defenses stood strong and the game ended with a 2 – 1 victory for the Lions.

There are three games this week: May 17 at South County, a May 19 rematch at Fairfax, and home against Lake Braddock on May 21; all 7:15pm starts.

Varsity Boys Tennis

Woodson Boys swept the Patriot District Singles and Doubles Championships - Congratulations to Singles Champion Vincent Truong, and Doubles Champions Vincent Truong and Ansh Pathapadu! Freshmen Jack Gelman and Josh Fields had a strong showing in the doubles consolation round but came up short against the pair from Robinson.

The team heads into Regional Playoff action later this week at Fairfax High School.
